Does your "cheap assness" go away during a systems launch? (ie. PS3 and Wii).

CAGiversary!
Come this fall when Wii launches, I have a total of $450 ready to spend on $50 launch titles and Virtual Console games. $180 in Gamebucks to get the Wii at Gamestop, and $270 to spend on maybe 4 games and an accessory and a few VC titles from a Best Buy gift card. Which is odd, considering DS is my favorite system, console or handheld, and of the 12 games I own, I averaged around $17 spent per game.

Is anyone else planning to throw caution to the wind if only for that special launch day of PS3 or Wii? Or will you simply wait till price drops?

For the 360 and PS2 (if i get one) I will be a cheap ass and wait till it hits like 150 dollars, but for the Wii ill prboably be doing the same thing as you. This is the first time ive actually been excited for a console launch. So at launch, ill probably get the system, 1-2 controllers, and 3-5 launch games, and 30-40 dollars on virtual console games depending on the price of everything.

Well, with my 360 paid the full 400 for the system (heck I can afford it and it was available)... I resorted to being a cheap ass on my 20+ games, only averaging around 21-22 per game

PSP and DS picked up tons of cheap games before I even had the systems, and very patiently waited for a good deal on each system

Will wait on the PS3 but will get a launch day Wii... I really want it badly

i will be a cheapass about all of them(wait a few years). That way i can see which system comes out with the games i actually want to play. And if third party support drops off, or if a lot of the systems break(like the thompson drive xboxes and launch PS2s) then I wont get hosed. I am not expecting great quality from the ps3 and xbox launch systems. Give them a few years and they will come up with a decent product, i will probably wait for the psthree etc.

Also, the nintendo console probably wont get much third party support, so I can wait a while on that. tho the playing old games on the Wii seems like it could be cool.

I've never gotten a launch system, but the Wii might be the thing that breaks me. I can almost guarantee that after I buy it, an extra controller, and a couple games, I'll probably revert to cheapass mode though.

i've purchased the following systems on Day One:

Playstation 2
Gamecube
Xbox 360
DS Lite

all others i've waited for. when it comes to games, i can usually wait, and i can count the games i've bought on launch on one hand. most times i'm a frugal gamer, and will wait until a price drop, but when it comes to having a hot new system right away, i'll take the plunge. i make enough money to comfortably purchase a new system when it releases, along with a game or two, and some accessories, so usually, that's what i do. the beauty part is, if i end up regretting it, i can always recoup pretty much all of my investment by selling it to someone else (the usual glut in stock of consoles near launch helps!). if, after buying my 360, i didn't want it, i could've turned it out for a profit even months after launch, for example. the same can be said of the PS2.

to me, it's worth the beefy launch price to check out a new system right away, and put it thru its paces over a few different games.

It goes away for me depending on what system it is. For example, I felt that the 360 was released too soon for me to splurge (over 100 unopened Xbox games will do that to you). Back in '99 I just HAD to have a Dreamcast though and I paid dearly for it on launch day (Imagine paying $50 for some crap Air Force Delta game among others).

Now that Dead Rising is out and Saint's Row is on the horizon, a 360 is looking mighty good. Plus every once in awhile Target sends me a 10% off coupon (for getting points using the Target Visa) so I'll get $40 off a premium system!

Are we talking launch day or launch window (2-3months)? When the Cube launched I picked up 2 of them on launch day at Kmart. I sold them both for a couple hundred bucks in profit. I bought the Dreamcast and SNES the November after launch. I recently bought my 360 with all the credit I built up at Gamestop. Right now, I do plan on getting a Wii at launch. The only reason I am getting it now, is due to the price. But to think about it, was the Cube priced at $199 at launch? Where are we so excited to buythe Wii at sub $250? Isn't it just a beefed up Cube?
Why are we so excited to buy the Wii at sub $250? Isn't it just a beefed up Cube?
corrected.
i think it has a lot to do with the control... with the Wii, Nintendo is very confident that they're offering a whole new gaming experience thru the unique "remote" controller, as well as their virtual console functionality... whether or not they succeed remains to be seen, but you can bet that's what they're hoping will get you to buy one. well, that and new 1st party titles.

btw, i don't know if your custom title is that way on purpose, but i believe the phrase is "cotton-headed ninnie-muggins".

I waited to buy my GameCube until it dropped to $99. I'll most likely be waiting for at least one price drop on the Wii.

I will grab a Wii a few months after launch if there are no bugs. If the retail price is $250, I'll find one with a game for $200. By then the launch games should be in the $20 used range also. I grab a PS3 a couple years after launch. I'll grab and Xbox 360 never...unless there's some awesome Xbox exclusive game I want to play...hasn't happened yet.

CAG wasn't around years ago. Even though I was still a cheap ass and thought I was the only one. I am excited about the possibilities of the Wii. The DS to me did not look that fun. But the day I got one cheap and put a game in, I was hooked. I love the DS and hope the Wii equals it.

Hmmm ive bought the GBA, DS, PSP, and DS Lite on launch days.......but everything else (GEN, SNES, PSX, Dreamcast, PS2, and Cube) ive wanted for..... but the PS3 and the Wii......I just cant wait that long.....im gonna get them at launch.

Already seting aside money for the systems...cuz id rather dish out cash than trade-in something and then say "crap i wish i had X cuz i feel like playing it right now" then you have to go searching to find it and yada yada yea....id rather dish out the cash.
Anyone agree??

I will be the Wii's bitch. Give me Zedal, Give me just about anything. I plan to drop atleast $600-700 that day easily.

Mostly but I probably will only get the Wii and Zelda and then CAG the rest of what I will own. For the amount of work they put into it I will pay full retail for Zelda.

since my bday is 11/15 i plan on getting a wii for my birthday so my cheap assness is still intact!

For the Wii I plan on going out and getting it first day. Funny thing is I know my wife will be at home just waiting to break it open with me.

Lol 700 dollars. Thats like... 6 games. Which do you plan on buying?

I've only ever bought one console 'near' its launch date(1 year after launch). That was the Playstation 2, two of which I had blue screen problems with. Three hundred and fifty bucks(bought a replacement warranty) flushed down the toilet in a year and a half. NO THANKS!!!

I'll wait for the PSthree if I want to play any of those alleged 'must have' games and only once Kmart is clearing them out at $50 or UNDER.

Only other time I wasn't a cheap ass when it came to consoles, the console got a price drop within 2 WEEKS of me buying it(grey PS1). I SO could've kicked myself for splurging.

I'm jazzed about Wii more than any other next gen console right now, but I'm probably going to skip launch. If I'm lucky, I'll end up getting it around spring of next year. I'm still waiting for the first Xbox 360 price drop, and PS3 is way, way out of the question at this point.

The only system I bought at launch was the Dreamcast. It will never happen again.

I'll wait for the 360 and PS3 to drop before buying them. As for the Wii, I'm going to have to see a lot more, and an sub-$100 price tag before picking up that overrated system.

I'm fairly sure that's where the excitement comes from.

The Wii is the first system launch I will take part in... my parents got me my NES and SNES, and I didn't buy an N64 until after I bought my GameCube... and that wasn't until 3 years after launch. Luckily I have some $800 in EB credit (that is rapidly being sucked dry by the stupid DS library) that should save me from having to open up my wallet for the Wii and a few games. And that store credit was earned on probably less than $300 cash, so I'll still be saving a hell of a lot of money.

There are a few games I know I want at launch, a few others I know I want but don't need yet (i.e. Metroid Prime 3 when I haven't finished Prime 1 or 2), and others I can wait for a price drop on.

I'll get the Wii at launch...and pick up all the PS2 RPG's at the end of the PS2 life cycle. I'm gonna wait until 2 or 3 price drops for the PS3.

$800 is EB credit?!? How?!?!?

 GameRush clearance and EB trade-in deal, combined with doing some clearances of the crap my collection has taken on over the last year or so.

There are people here who made far more than I did, actually.

I'll definitely be getting a Wii at launch with a bunch of games.

Funny thing though is that I've gotten every console at launch since I have been old enough to buy them for myself (since SNES). I will _not_ be getting a PS3 at launch. If MGS was launching, I would grab one up for $600 easy. But I'll wait until then, or another game or two convinces me that I need a PS3 immediately.

Depends. I bought a Dreamcast on launch day...it was only 200 bucks, so I didn't feel bad at all.

Other than that, I've always waited for a deal. I didn't buy my 360 until the end of February, when I found a way to get 50 bucks off. The one and only time I bought a higher-priced console on launch day was with the first XBox. Everything else dating back to the NES and moving forward (including handhelds), was either given to me or bought at a later date after a price drop or deal.

That said, I'll probably buy a Wiivolution at or near launch if it's 200. Even if there are no launch titles I'm interested in (and it looks like there are not), I could just use it to play some Gamecube stuff I didn't get around to. The Wii games I want would show up eventually.

Not to go too off topic, but am I the only guy who plans on getting a Wii and the GC version of Zelda to play it on? I just don't know if i trust the control scheme for that type of game yet.

Well, I'm planning to get the Wii, and I have a GC Zelda coming to me thanks to the forever-ago trade-in deal at EB.

But I want to exchange it for Wii Zelda if I can.

I've no interest in the Wii or the PS3, but my cheapassness sure as hell went away during, and for a few months after, the 360 lauch. Spent $800 on day one on system, accessories, and games and bought several more full priced, or really close to it, games over the next few months. Thankfully, it's mostly returned, but I did pay $62 for NCAA and $48 for Madden. The very odd part about that is I'm not really much of a football fan. I've been playing the hell out of, and quite enjoying, NCAA though. My cheapassness is going to be very strained for the rest of the year too with Marvel Ultimate Allicance, Test Drive Unlimited, NHL 07, NBA 2k7, Samurai Warriors 2, Blitz, NFS: Carbon, WWE: Smackdown versus Raw, and DOA Xtreme 2 all slated for release before the end of November. Damn the holiday season...

Now that we've got more money, the cheap-ass-ness in my house applies mostly to software. More money equals the ability to preorder a DS Lite (first preorder ever) and the Wii. I did get my "second-hand" black GameCube on half.com 2 months after launch, practically unused and $50 off MSRP...but I think the Wii's gonna be way more popular than the Cube, so I'll be preordering just to be safe.

Got a PS2 2 years after launch, only because it was free at BB for signing a 2-year ISP contract. Otherwise I probably would have waited another 1.5-2 years before buying one myself. It'll be YEARS AND YEARS before I get a PS3, because I literally could not trust sony's manufacturing reliability less, and I refuse to be one of their guinea pigs. Or maybe it'll be years and years because I'm waiting for the $200-250 price point...if it ever happens.

And I'm sorry, but the Raving Rabbids crack my ass up, to an embarrassing extent. So I'm very excited that an Ancel game is one of the Wii launch titles. Here's to hoping the Wii launch library is better than the GameCube's! Because man that was sad.

The only system I ever got at launch (more like launch window) was the N64, and even then I got that as a gift so my cheap-assyness is intact. The Wii will be the first console I ever spend my own money on at launch and I cannot wait. Heck, my Custom Title says it all.

Although I did buy a DS Lite in Japan in May....So I may have been out of the launch window in the Japanese market but beat the launch window in the US. So did I buy the DS Lite at launch or after it? I'm confused now.

I feel completely the same way. I'll probably end up getting the GCN version and testing out if I like the control scheme on Metroid Prime 3 or another adventure game.

Back to the thread though, for this launch, I will set aside all my worries about cheapness...but, not really. I'm buying my Wii and all my games, accessories, etc. at Gamerush, where I have over 700 dollars in credit from the recent trade-in deal/CC deals/other trade-ins I did because of the deal. So, I am paying a significantly discounted rate for all that stuff with the credit...

The only system I've bought on the Launch day was the DS Lite. I may consider doing the same for the Wii but I don't know. I'm definitely going to wait for drops on the PS3 and 360 before I consider it.

I'll be waiting a few years on the PS3...$400 is a 'maybe' purchase for me. (Premium system, of course.)

As for the Wii...it will be picked up on day one. That, along with a couple games, definitely means I'm throwing my "cheap assness" out the window!

I picked up the PSP a few days after launch day. Every other system I waited years before purchasing. That being said, I probably will pick up the Wii this Christmas. I need a new Cube since it's on the fritz and I'd rather just get the Wii than waste money on another Cube. I will be trying to flip PS3s but I won't get getting one for myself until at least late 2008. I'm hoping to pick up a DS Lite and the 360 sometime next year.

i will be a cheapass for the next gen launch
i remember how much it hurt when i paid $600 for xbox launch + 3 games only to have that POS broke the hd in 2 years. on my 2nd xbox now since i have over 100 xbox games. i got my gc for 99.99 plus zelda collector's edition. as for the wii and ps3, i'll wait till they are at least 99.99 before i put more cash out there. i think i could do without the xbox360 but i still dont know. if the price is right i'll buy.

The only launch day systems I have ever bought were a GBA SP and a Nintendo DS. I got no games with my SP, but one with my DS, Mario 64. I paid for the SP out of my pocket, and the DS with credit.

My cheapassness doesn't really ever go away.

I wait at least a year, so even if I buy the system at full price (Xbox 360) there is a ton of great games available, some have already seen price drops, and more great games are right around the corner. Also, 2nd gen units are out and have fixed the problems with the launch units sometimes.

I'll do the same thing with the Wii and PS3.

does cheapness count if i've been stocking up GC titles for the Wii?

thank god for clearance, and getting GC titles for $4.98 is a score for me. so that when the Wii comes out, i got titles to play with.
and before we see Wii titles to flood the shelves, i'll settle with GC titles for the time being.

price depreciation on console is slower than game title price depreciation. i dunno if my math adds up on saving on games, consoles are different for me when it comes to cheapness.

I think this will be my first system launch as a CAG, and I'm planning on not being very CAG like, when it comes down to the Wii.

I bought my 360 with GAMERUSH credit...so, it was probably $150 out of pocket racking up the credit maybe....

I also have about $500 in credit STILL at GameRush....I will probably throw it at the PS3 and sell it on EBAY.

Only systems I got around the launch date were the PS2 and the GBA SP. I'm not even sure what I'm going to do with the next generation of games because I have so many of this generations titles.
