Well, unless you count Nvidia's new 6600 series that they unveiled at Quakecon. They're supposed to rock and are sub 200 dollars.

But cannot be purchased at the moment and possibly won't reach stores until October. It will likely take the crown then but for now it's vaporware.

HardOCP lists late September. If it was me I'd wait the month and a half and just pay for Doom III as opposed to getting a previous generation ATI card that will be significantly lower in performance.

edit: of course, as of right now the 6600s are looking to be PCI-Express only, so that's a strike against them if you have to upgrade your motherboard to use it.
 
Meh, the 9800pro for $189 deal is much better. It's definatly worth the extra $50 (if you were planning on buying Doom 3 anyways), as far as raw speed goes it's almost twice as fast as the 9600xt. Though hopefully both will be eclipsed next month if the 6600 is released, if nothing else that should drive down the prices of 9600/9800 cards even more.

Edit: wait, is the 6600 card really going to be PCI-E only? Damn, that sucks, if they don't make an AGP version then I basically have to cross it off my list of things to look forward to. Oh well, we'll see what happens to the prices of the 6800GT...

So then DOOM 3 wouldn't be free, it would be $4.99.
 
.... well going to pricewatch.com, you can get the same card for 120 or 150 pending if u want 128 or 256 so its not really that good of a deal,
 
9600XT sucks.

Never buy that piece of junk. It's an OC'd 9600 pro and you can get a 9800 pro for around the same price and OC it to a 9800 XT.
 
It's technically not free since you have to BUY to get something FREE... which it wouldn't be free since you would have to buy...

Exactly! Since when is having to spend $174 (plus tax) considered free? It might be "Free with the purchase of", but if you weren't planning to buy a graphics card, then it's no deal at all. :)
 
Yea, its a terrible title. Try ATI 9600XT for $149 AR @ Circuit City.

And I'd throw something about Doom in there.. but I can't really pick out if there's a rebate on Doom, or if it's buy the card get $20 off of Doom, or if there's a rebate on Doom or where exactly that $20 is coming from in your addition.
 
9600xt blows, compared to the 9600 pro. it costs about $50 more and barely bests the pro in benchmarks.
