Downgrading My Xbox Live Account.

So, I'm headin' away for a bit, and since I won't be trying to chainsaw people in half, I wanted to cancel my Xbox Live Account (well, downgrade it to silver, y'know, not paying them). But for the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to do it from the Xbox's Account Management. The Xbox website was not helpful, either.

Any tips?

Have to call them. They don't want you to be able to cancel your gold membership easily, so they make you talk to someone.

When I've done it in the past it was fairly painless. They'll ask if you realize that you'll be missing out on (blah blah blah), and you say "yeah, I know."
 
Aahhh, I'm on hold with customer service right now. Who would've thought this could be so painful? Oh, Microsoft, you've never done me wrong.
 
How long you gonna be away for? You won't be billed unless your ending date is coming up. No point canceling your subscription if you're only going to stop playing for a few months with the yearly sub.
 
That reminds me, i'm going away on vacation for a month in the summer and my sub is a 1 year prepaid card. Just lost out on a month. Damn.
