Dragon Ball Z: Season 3

Right now at bestbuy you can buy 2 of certain Funimation titles and get 10 off instantly. I bought DBZ Season 3 and the Broly Triple pack for about 42 total.

This is the last time Funimation is puting the seasons out unless they try to put them out on HD.

I don't know if they work on NTSC DVD players or not, but there's the Dragon Box. They don't contain english subtitles ( japan loves us ) so, there ya go.

WHAT? ASS!!!!! You have got to be shitting me. I was on the fence about completing the series since seasons 1-3 are the best anyway, but for 30-40 bucks a box, why not?

So all they are going to do is release seasons 1-3 and that's it? The other sagas will remain as is?

From what I hear they are releaseing the rest of Dragon Ball Z but Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball GT are already out.

Went to Daizex and it turns out American fans get raped. Funi raped those box set DVDs and they're all we're going to get for now. Dragon Box doesn't have English subtitles, plus it is VERY limited ( preorder only item ) and would probably cost you hundreds, if not thousands, to get the box set.

On the other hand, the Funi box set is 39 odd episodes for 30 dollars. THat's a great deal if you can take the cropping issues. The damned thing is in widescreen. I have no idea why. They're pushing it as HD and it's a god damned cartoon. Damn it. I'd rather have it in 4:3 but this is all you can get. Bitch.

They're also looking into taking these sets into Blu Ray. Fukkn' ripoff.

IT'S A CARTOON.

* That began in 89 and went all through 95.

EDIT: I take a good portion of that back. Well I don't, but I"m not totally against the box sets. It's a really cheap deal, and at it's core it's the same old DBZ we love with various issues. If you can get past the various cropping issues, grain issues, etc, then I think you'd be fine with it. I just want the entire series, myself. Can't wait until they start getting into Android Saga and Cell Games.

As far as I'm aware, they're not actually planning to stop the DVD releases. The Broly movies alone are just to test the water.

Also, the cropping isn't the major issue anymore.

Not with remastering jobs like this:

This happens just about anytime the footage is required to show any kind of shaking, such as someone powering up and the planet begins to shake. The colors vanish and reappear rapidly and it's HIGHLY noticable. That and this set in particular features a mix of redubbed lines/voices and older, inexperienced voice acting back when they started in 1999, so it it all sounds really half-assed.

The fact of the matter is is that this is all we've got. Funimation is basically telling is that this is all that they're putting out and that we can suck their dick. I have no idea why they did this rematering and widescren bullshit. It's just pathetic. I wish there was an alternative but there isn't. Not even if enough people complain.

Not saying that complaining is wrong though. Complaining might actually bring about some alternative. Maybe they might start putting English subtitles on those Japanese DVDs. Bitches.

Not likely to ever happen since those DVDs are targeted primarily JUST the Japanese audience. Especially those who grew up watching the three series' each week. :p

What's more is that the remastering isn't even done by them but by an outside source. Funny thing is the guy's previous work was mainly porn. But aside from that, said remastering involved FUNimation's film masters. So now there's absolutely no chance of ever getting future fullscreen releases as they went and fucked it up by cropping it and having so many remastering issues.

Alright, so here is how I got it for cheap. I bought DBZ: Season 3 for 29.99 and The Movie pack first strike for 19.99 and got the 10 dollars taken off. Then I took back the Movie Pack first strike. Walah DBZ: Season 3 for 19.99

Actually, I think they copied the film masters to do the remastering. They could probably release a fullscreen DVD but it'd cost too much money for such a niche market. People who have an HDTV can get the exact same cropped BS widescreen effect by zooming in. this is a standard feature with most HDTVs. Then again, you know FUNi.

" New HD BLU RAY disc with FULLSCREEN 4:3 non remastered and WIDESCREEN remastered content! "

Unfortunately, we all wish that was the case. FUNi did stupidly ruin their original masters as the Ultimate Uncut Edition releases of JUST the Mexican dub use the "remaster" footage instead. They've pretty much also admitted to using their film masters. :\

Lets just get this clarified here. FUNI isn't an evil company. They are a stupid company who does evil things ( such as lie and stretch the truth ) just to make up for said stupid things that they've done.

Oh no doubt. It seems like Dragon Ball is the only franchise they can't done right.
I really want these sets but something tells me my pioneer/funimation tapes are of better quality.
You would be correct there, sorta.

Just a random question, are you subbie or dubbie? I really like the dubs but I'll try to watch the show over in japanese atleast once. I really do'nt think I"d like Girlku that much.

I never really cared for FUNimation's version of the franchise. Seemed more like an adaption than translation. Especially with the liberties in lines they took. Also, while Goku may be voiced by a woman, at least Goku doesn't spout dangerously borderline homosexual references like English dub's Frieza did (wanting to caress balls, calling Goku "big boy", etc). :p Plus Goku's character is brought out more to life than Goku's English VA does. His thing with Goku is that he just makes him sound like an ordinary idiot of a man who grunts A LOT, even when grunting wasn't present in the Japanese version.

As for other stuff, I'm very capable of watching anything in other languages. Dragon Ball I grew up with in both languages. Did not care much for that dub.

I don't know, I just kind of grew to love the Funimation voices. Oh, and Freeza's US voice is terrible. IMO, they tried to make all of the monsters more monsterous. Piccolo's Japanese voice is more human like then his USA voice, same for the first 2 forms of Cell ( I think ) and Freeza.

Speaking of Cell, I remember a line in the dub that really made me wonder. First Cell is fighting Piccolo or whoever, and the person he's fighting asks who he is, he responds with " Your brother" and then hits him. That really doesn't make much sense to me at all.

Only reason I've been putting up with the dub is I can't listen to it in Japanese and understand it while I work on homework or do other things.

But I have the japanese subtitles on for when I do, they changed the dialogue so freakin much and for no apperant reason 99% of the time. But I first watched it dubbed on TV so I'm used to it. But I prefer to watch Anime in general in Japanese with subs

The Ocean group dub (up to Frieza saga) was actually really good aside from the kid-friendly vocabulary. Their voice actors are actually really good I think.

Japanese voices are exteremly better but I can't stand the music that the Japanese version had. I grew up on the dubbed versions tho so maybe that's why... It's just not the same without the english voices and music no matter how bad and annoying it might be now. lol

DRAGON DRAGON, ROCK THE DRAGON, DRAGON BALL ZZZzzzz. I have the first two seasons but haven't started watching them yet. I read about the cropping issues and junk but I figure it's still probably worth it. Better than paying $18 for 3 episodes like back in the day (before pirating everything). I'll probably have a more valid opinion of the dvd sets once I watch them.

It seems that many of the voice actors who do stuff for Funimation read their lines without ever watching the Japanese version of the show first. In some recent translations (Negima and School Rumble to name a few) a lot of the voices don't even remotely match the characters. Even when the voices are okay their inflections are completely wrong for the situation they're in. It's like watching a parody of the show instead of the show itself. With some notable exceptions I thought they did a pretty good job with DBZ.
