I bought a DC a few months back for $5 at a yard sale.. it works fine. I have 3 games (Tony Hawk 2 [cuz it came w/ the DC lol], ChuChuRocket! and MVC2).

This urks me and I don't know if it's the system...but..everytime I put the dreamcast on I ALWAYS (never had a time when i DIDN'T) have to set the time. It's always on some day in 1998 (which is weird since the DC came out 9/9/99).

My friend gave me a VMU w/ MVC2..and i know the battery is dead.. (but the save file works). If I replace the battery: Will it be able to save the time?!

And also, whenever I start the system.. i can't tell if it's the system OR the VMU but I hear some kind of "Diiiiing" sound.

...any of this common and able to be solved??

As far as the saving problem goes... That happens to me when I unplug the system. Do you have it on a power strip or something? Are you doing something where you unplug the dreamcast?

Not sure about the VMU battery.. but I belive you will.

& The ding is the VMU.. it's supposed to do that.

Hope this helped!

I think the internal clock battery ran out. Almost all big electronics have them now to save the time and settings. It's just a watch battery on the circuit somewhere. Try taking off some of those tabbed compartments underneath to see if you can access a battery. Otherwise crack the whole thing open. It's not like you still have a warranty.
Actually If I can recall correctly i think you can actually see the battery from outside the case somehow. Whether it was through the cracks or behind the bottom compartments I can't remember.

That's the thing, I'm not :( It's plugged in, and sits there plugged in.
I do have it plugged into an outlet that's SHARED w/ other stuff (TV, games, PC, ETC)

But yeah, I never unplug it!

There's a small watch battery in the dreamcast???? now I'll have to check, lol
If your referring to the VMU, then yeah that I know. It takes 2 CR2032 batteries.

If I remember correctly the battery for the internal clock is at the rear of the console. And the batteries for the VMU used to run out like every other day, so it might not be worth it to even replace them.

the VMU w/ battery is only if I wanted to play any games on the VMU right?
Because I did take the batteries out, and it's not like I lost any saved files.

Well that's how most systems are. Computers and stereos I know for a fact have watch batteries to power the internal memory. Why wouldn't a console? The watch batteries usually last 5-7 years so most things will break before it goes out.

well i just looked at the DC, and there isn't anything on the outside.. so looks like I'll have to take it apart ::SIGH::

Let the system run for a hour, it'll charge the battery(it's up near the controller port) so it'll keep the time.

As for the VMU, you don't need a battery to save, the battery is meant to play the games on a VMU.

The 'watch' battery is right behind the controller ports. Take the case apart (make sure you don't have a game in at the time). See where the controllers plug into the front? The internal battery is sticking up on it's edge. To remove/replace requires two solders IIRC.

Or like the post above said, the battery recharges. Leave your system on for a few hours (not being played) and the battery should recharge. If not, it's dead.

I unplug my system when not being played, and if I go a week or so without playing, my battery loses it's charge.
