Dreamcast: The greatest console that never was...

pumbaa

CAGiversary!
So, a Skies of Arcadia thread got me thinking about my good ol' buddy DC. The system was amazing... the games were friken amazing... and the online capabilities were revolutionary. If you owned the console, what did you think of it. It was my first step into hardcore gamerdom, and it was a damn good first step. So discuss, and remember the good times. BTW Capcom, I'm still waiting for my PowerStone boxset complilation for Gamecube.

Love it! I still bust mine out every once in a while. I still take it online too! Look at my game collection and see all of the great DC games I have!

For the longest time my DC was my favorite console. I still like it, and still play Virtua Tennis and Soul Calibur.

Bought it before the US launch when I got the imported box of The House of the Dead 2 with lightgun, since I loved the original. Kept it for all the amazing imports, including the Sakura Wars saga by Overworks, the same Sega studio that created Skies of Arcadia. Even got the Sakura Wars LE console.

Still love Illbleed after all these years. Best survival horror evah.

Holy grail: the broadband adaptor!

My buddies and I still play Worms Armageddon, Virtua Tennis, and Chu Chu Rocket 4 player once in a while. Skies of Arcadia is one of my favorite games of all time. Awesome system, I loved it.

Grandia II was pretty good for the time, but I don't think it was the best RPG for the system.

4 Player Virtual Tennis was the shit. Power Stone, Marvel Vs Capcom 2, and all those other great games replaced pushed my DC to become the party machine. It replaced my N64s popularity.

Yea! The 4 controller ports made it the party console before DC came out. Smash Bros, No Mercy, Goldeneye..come on now!

No man ... just no ... I'll give you Smash Brothers, but I really didn't like Goldeneye and Perfect Dark that much. I hate the layout of the controller :p

Personally, I didn't like it. Most all of it's best games were fighting games and I don't like fighting games.

Jet Grind Radio was awesome, so was Sonic Adventure. Other then those 2 games though, most of the rest of the lineup left me wanting more. Graphics were really good though, whatever that's worth...

Since Ebgames had been blowing out DC's dirt cheap I went ahead and got another one since I sold my original. Now that I know a lot more about games I can appreciate a couple more games like Grandia 2, Shenmue, and Cannon Spike, but still compared to other consoles, there just aren't nearly as many "must-have" games.

Yeah, Grandia II was amazing. I remember my friend lent it to me, and I got all the way to the final boss (or close to it anyways... when the evil chick was fighting you). She had this one spell, that froze the game everytime. So in that battle, everytime SHE used it (the AI) the game would freeze. So sad... I never finished it. Such a good stary too. That battle system was AMAZING. Where the hell is Grandia 3?!?!? (and no... Grandia Xtremem doesn;t count...)

Lets not forget out little buddy the VMU... connectivity before there was connectivity. GOD why did the DC fail?!!?

I always liked the Spawn game when playing with a couple of people :)

There are good import shooter for it though if you like those like Border Down, Twinkle Star Sprites (port of a Neo title), and others. I actually didn't like the DC that much until the last 6 months or so when I started buying some of the more unknown games like Gundam 0079.

4 player Sega Swirl....drinking game goodness!

And Typing of the Dead....brilliant!

Oh, and the faulty launch software....excellant.....err...wait a second....

Weren't almost all of those Midway games?

I think they were Hydro Thunder, MK Gold, and Ready 2 Rumble.

Sega Swirl is the best! Collapse in the CAG arcade is almost just like it.

I almost forgot about Phantast Star Online. That had me going to school sleepless sometimes.

I played SO much Phantasy Star Online on the DC when it first came out. To this day I break out the DC and play Bangaio and Armada and Soul Calibur. Also, Powerstone is still so much fun! Its sad that Bangaio wasnt more popular...its a really amazing game.

It's sad that PSO moved to become a PtP service :(

I wish they would have kept it free.

I had at least 350 hrs. on PSO... oh... and I still have Bangai-o... is that valuable?

lest we forget... perhaps the funnest party game of all time... SAMBA DE AMIGO... I think that game was the highlight of about 4 of my parties (and with NORMAL people even!)

The East got Samba De Amigo 2000, which we never got over in the states :(

I wish we would have gotten some more titles over here for the DC instead of 10 different wrestling games.

God damn I love Dreamcast. And so did everyone else......for a time.

But I remember back when it first came out, all the EB/Gamestop guys wouldn't stop talking about it. Just a few months later, when PS2 was announced, I actually had employees LAUGH at me for buying Dreamcast games over "SUPERIOR" PS2 games. I'm talking about the same people I would excitedly talk to about the latest DC games, now laughing at me for supporting the system.
But lets get one thing straight, I do love my PS2.

NOW.

At launch and for about a year after, PS2 fucking sucked hard and sat and collected dust when I wasn't using it to play PS1 RPGs. I swear Sony paid off employees to hype their catbox and drive Sega into the ground. Its really a damn shame.

Anywho, Samba De Amigo is amazing, as are the power stone games, Bangai-O, Soul Cal, and all the Capcom and SNK fighters that graced the little white box. And I don't care what anyone says, I LOVED Sonic Adventure 1 & 2.
I

The one thing that hasn't aged well with the system is the racing games. I can still go back and play Rage Racer or something for the PS1 if I'm really bored, but I have no desire to break out Metropolis Street Racer or even Daytona USA.

Speaking of Daytona USA where is a sequel?

Does the dreamcast still go online? like could i play PSO 1 or 2? i heard theres a no pay crack (for 2)you can get on pro action replay... but are the servers still up?

game store employees laughed at me too for buying a used dreamcast instead of a ps2.

now we'll see who's laughing!

oh wait... it's still them.

I think all the servers have been shut down by now.

Unreal Tournament should work too then. I wonder if anyone ever played Speed Devils Online over the net?

Who, me?

I loves me some hot DC action.

I have a couple of DC systems and while I enjoyed most of the games (for a while at least), I wasn't as smitten on them as most others were. To be honest it was one my least favorite sega systems.
