Dreamcast - Thoughts, Opinions, QUESTIONS

CAGiversary!
Been stewing over buying one since coming to the CAG boards as they seem to be highly touted.

Picked one up at my local GameXchange w/ 1 controller for $29.99, along with a VMU for $7.95, and picked up Sonic Adventure for $9.95. With my 10% Active Duty Military Discount it came to $44.xx. Not too bad methinks.

Took it home, hooked it up and my immediate response was "where the hell did this thing go wrong?!" The DC is as impressive a machine as the PS2 or XBOX in my own opinion. Was it Sega's already suspect marketing strategy or was it the lingering 32X/Saturn debacle still too fresh in people's minds? I've always loved Sega, they're a company with alot of balls. They've always been ahead of the pack and I'd like to think that people just weren't ready for this beauty either.

I will be getting Sonic Adventure 2 as soon as I can find it but I wanted to know where I can get the "Dreamcast Browser Disc". Does anyone still play their DC online?

Ha! I just came back from EB with a Dreamcast. It was $19.99 with 1 controller. I also picked up a VMU for $1.99 (used but in perfect condition!), and Phantasy Star Online for $4.99. I haven't tried it out yet, but so far my only gripe is the analoge stick is a little funked up. Hopefully it won't make a difference when I play.

*EDIT* Ok, I'm having a slight problem. When I put a game in, it says Please insert game disc. I'm guessing thats bad, lol. Gotta go back to EB now...

I also got a DC (when EB was having that buy 3 games for $4.95 or up and get one free deal) in August and I have to say that its a kickass system, and a great value. Buy Grandia II - great game.

It's not just piracy, the fact that the PS2 was looming really hurt, it is without a doubt the best console that I've ever had

I just with I knew if they were going to do another deal like that. I got one at launch and had it for two years. Now I miss it and want one again.

Can you still play PSO? I thought that since it's an online game it must be dead at this point? #-o

DC is an amazing system...I love mine...I used to have a black sega sports one but I sold it awhile ago and I bought another one recently...I will never sell it ever again

I'm sure it will. I've seen that deal at least a few times.

Best system ever. I think there are many reasons for its demise:
1. Bad Sega reputation from 32x/Saturn (even though the saturn was badass, it was graphically underpowered and didn't have enough games)
2. piracy
3. PS2 hype
4. The Saturn left Sega in a pretty poor financial position. Dreamcast would have taken off if Sega could have held out a little longer, but they didn't have the money to hold out any longer.

If Sega just could have held out until people saw how lame the PS2 really was then they would have been successful.

In any case, Dreamcast proved that there are more important things determining success than having the best console with the best games.

The used DC game selection is getting minimal in my area, and it's only going to get harder to find complete legitimate copies of games as time goes on. Start looking now and see what you can find before it's too late.

Theres no offline single player mode? There is in the Xbox version. If there isn't in this version, I'm gonna be pissed. Don't you think the douches at EB would tell me something like that?

there is offline single player mode. personally I never got into PSO too much myself, though.

There should be. There was an offline version in the GCN version as well. It's not very fun though.

Ya know, I didn't even look over at EBgames.com, I checked Gamestop but they were backordered and 39.99. Oh well, I would've saved $15.00, ya live n' learn right? The $15 isn't that bad considering supporting this local chain is worth it. Their prices are very competetive.

Don't worry, there's an offline mode.
To simulate the online mode, just pretend somebody ran up, kicked you in the sack, and stole your rare weapon. It's about the same experience.

Theres an offline mode in the Xbox version, yet you need to sign on to Live to actually play it.... That makes me scratch my head.

For those who haven't seen the Gamerush thread, DC games are selling for $0.99. There are posts that if GR has a pre-played DC in stock that it is selling for $9.99. I've picked up quite a few games the past couple of days.

OP, I love the arcade racing games selection.

Ok, cool. I just bought it because it was the cheapest game and the Xbox version was pretty cool when I played it. Now I just gotta get a Dreamcast that will read games!

Is that aimed at me?

If you read the faq it doesn't tell you how to get illegal dreamcast copies or how to play them.

I just gives the historical and technological background to understand what happened.

I don't think it was so much piracy as it was ps2 was coming and it had the cheapest dvd player in it at the time, that really killed it in Japan. I still like it better then any of the current systems.

I have read somewhere that you can play Phantasy Star online for Dreamcast on some unofficial fan operated servers. Not sure if it's true but I would think it is entirely possible, the Dreamcast had some hard core fans.

I think the whole Dreamcast piracy thing was blown a bit out of proportion. Sure, I know people who bought the system used just to play ROMs and such, but the larger Sony hype machine (Saddam uses them to guide nuclear missles, Emotion Engine to rend human flesh, MGS2, etc.) and a generation of Playstation fanboys are what really caused DC's downfall.

Its true. Dont have time to link it right now (going to work) but they have created servers, but i belive ONLY if you have a BBA or someway to route your DC through Windows

A lot of great Dreamcast exclusives are FINALLY being ported over to other systems. For the longest time the DC was the only way to play Marvel vs Capcom 2, Street Fighter III, or Soul Calibur.

However, one game that has yet to be improved on is San Fransisco Rush 2049. Definitely buy that one if you can; four-player stunt mode is amazing! Other games that are still DC-exclusive as far as I know are Project Justice, Cannon Spike, Plasma Sword, and Mortal Kombat Gold.

The pages on that site have a LOT of info, but you do need to sign-up (free) to use the forums. Just found it myself, but is much better than the other site ive found.

Also, you may notice certain area that refrence a PC version of PSO, because there is. As far as release, wether its just a rip from a forign country or was actually sold here, i do not know.

Man, sucks to live in Columbus, OH right now. NONE of the BB's have GameRush's in them. I've been looking for a cheap DC to replace the one I wish I never sold

There are plenty of great DC games to look for. It had lots of great fighters (2d and 3d), shmups and arcade conversions plus some great weird stuff like Seaman, Typing of the Dead, and Samba di Amigo. I still think Soul Calibur 1 is better than 2 and no other sysem has had a four player fighting game as good as the Powerstone games.

Overall SSBM is better than Powerstone 2. More of everything from Characters to unlockables, but PS2 is just really fun and the 3-d fighting was pulled off pretty well too.

I bought my dc launch day. I have 110 games, all originals. 3 controllers, 4 vmus, 2 4x vmus (sega brand) mc2 wheel, mouse and keyboard, panther dc, fishing rod controller, vga box and a light gun. My favorite system by far.

Power Stone 2 was great, and there's a great Treasure shooter called Bangai-O for Dreamcast. But the supreme, supreme-o game for Dreamcast was a little thang called Jet Grind Radio. Record of Lodoss War also kicked some major ass -- better than the Dark Alliance games for slash-and-hacking, IMHO.

That's pretty much it IMHO. If piracy was the sole cause, or even the biggest, you could have kissed PC gaming good bye a long time ago. Piracy exists on all systems, true, not as easy as a boot disc, but it's definatly there, and after a quick mod, you're ready to be a pirating jerk off.

The DC would have had a chance had Sony not had it's rabid foaming at the mouth fans marrying the damn thing....Some guy wanted to change his name to Playstation 2, I mean come on, in addition to Sony's exageration hype, no....it can not push as many polygons as they wanted people to think.

Too many people still had it fresh in their mind that the Saturn sucked (don't think it did personally, but that's just me), and the 32X waffle iorn still haunted Sega's past.

The Dreamcast still had better games IMHO at the time it was being supported.

I like my PS2, but to this day I still don't think it was the end all it was hyped to be, I already had a DVD player.

Let us never speak of Cannon Spike or the crap that was Mortal Kombat Gold ever again. *shudder*

The day Sony does (if it ever did happen) kick Nintendo in the Nuts the same thing will be said.

I had picked up a Dreamcast a year or so backa nd was blown away at how good the system was actually.

Another reason the Hype machine Sony must be dethroned.

Unfortunately, the Sony hype machine is part of what has helped make gaming go mainstream and become more popular with consumers in general. For better or worse, casual gamers bring a lot of money into Sony, and the company is not about to give up that money without a fight. The Sony hype machine will continue to see generations of fanboys touting the "Playstation" name for years to come, and there isn't really anything that anybody (not Nintendo, not Microsoft, etc.) can do about it. This race is only Sony's to lose.

I have 3 Dreamcasts and 135+ games and 12+ accessories (all Sega brand :)) I love the system. I don't know of anyone that still plays it online. I never have played it online before. You can get the Sega broadband network adapter for around $80 on eBay. Congrats on getting your new DC. I know you'll enjoy it. Pick up these awesome games:
Crazy Taxi
Shenmue
Soul Calibur
Space Channel 5
Speed Devils
Typing of the Dead
Resident Evil: Code Veronica
Power Stone
Sonic Adventure

Isn't PSO tied down to a particular Dreamcast unit? I know there was a code in the v.2 manual I had to enter. Or is that just for online play?

Just take a moment to imagine how good the DC games would have gotten once developers really learned how to program to the system's strengths. Drool.

Those #'s were only for online. The only PSO that you had to worry about was the one for Xbox, mainly because you HAD to have Live.
