DS Browser info.. some bad news.

ooooooooooooooooohhhhh fuck

but to be able to read CAG posting deals on the go, so i don't have to print out a list is better then nothing.

then what's the point? Flash is the biggest omission. There had to have been a way to at least play streaming flash vids. specially with teh extra memory cart.

It's really stupid because I really didn't want to suft the web with the system but as drooling with the tought of being a portable media player to stream videos from the web or even play point/click flash games.

Hell, even the PSP's browser can do video. Not sure about the other stuff though.:whistle2:(

So can we look forward to investigative news stories on how this puts pornography in kids' hands like with the PSP?

I could do without the flash. Seeing as how many times flash sometimes crashes my browser. But being able to check the forums on here on the go would be cool. Only problem is that the only time I don't at least have a tab open to CAG is when I'm asleep or not at home. Seriously, I spend so much time here I should be a friggin mod...

Yes, and remember, it happens by magic.

I stand behind my previous statement that I only want my DS to play games. Anything extra that they want to add is fine and I won't complain as long as the games that come out are still awesome. So this browser could come out as text only and I wouldn't care because it isn't the reason I bought the system in the first place.

That's just my opinion.

Flash is one of the most annoying parts of the internet, imho. 90% of the annoying ads that used to be displayed in my browser (thank you Adblock) were flash based.. it would be great not to have to deal with that junk on the DS.

No sound and video is a little disappointing, but they don't want Play-Yan to be rendered useless by a browser application.

I would guess this is mainly an attempt to minimize the amount of data that the N-WiFi network has to push around (for free). PDF support would have been nice, but isn't necessary by any means for light browsing.

Handwriting recognition for address input? Whoop!
Flash is one of the most annoying parts of the internet
QFT. If I were ever to pick this up, I can't see myself really missing any of these features.

That's true but Opera (at least the older ones) let you turn them off completely if you choose to. It can also turn of images, video, and sound on the fly with a the press of a button (IE and FireFox can turn of images/video too but it's a bit more complicated). I don't see why they couldn't have just done that. Now that I think about it, I'm guessing it has a lot more to do with the DS's CPU. It can't be that much faster than the CPU found in the N64.

The DS was never meant to be a portable media player in the first place - so I am content to surf without it. It`s supposed to be used for quick check ups rather than hour long sessions. If you want such an experience, then bring a laptop.

It's doubtful that such functionality would be added; the only possible way I could see it is with an expensive add-on cart that would go in the GBA slot and give the DS more 'oomph' (yes that is a technical term) to load and render the pages.

YouTube videos are flash-based.

I care more about wifi connectivity than flash. Will the DS connect anywhere that has free wi-fi, or do you have to go to Nintendo's hot-spots, ie Mcdonalds.

Also, are internet protocls vastly different between Japan and US; in other words, is there a reason NOT to import the Japanse version at launch?

Excuse my ignorance, thanks to anyone who knows the answers! I would love to be able to do a quick check on CAG before buying a game at the mall to make sure I had the best deal, without lugging my laptop around.

You're right, it wasn't. That's why it's an add on and NOT included with the system. Nintendo is giving you the choice to buy this, not forcing you to pay for it. I'm mealy upset that even though they're giving us a browser, it's very dumbed down for being $30 (or whatever).

It will work with any free open network (found in public places) or WEP secured network, so import away!:)

Would have been nice but, oh well. If I'm connected to the internet most of the time I'm going to be in my own home. Not often will I be out somewhere using someone else Wi-Fi, and even then it's no big loss. I wonder if they will include rewritable memory with it so you can save pages for offline browsing, such as taking a list with you. :)
Browsing CAG forums on the go would be an awesome addition to the DS.
Yeah, that's what I was planning on doing. At first the idea of a browser was really stupid but when I realized I could do a lot of stuff with it. I could check prices online or check CAG for any good deals or I could suft the web between classes.:D

Oh well, I can still do most of that- just not watch videos, play flash games, or listen to streaming music. Too bad it'll only work in the mall though because I don't think stores like BB and CC have wi-fi...
It won't be able to display video, sound, flash, or PDF files. Boo!! That means no YouTube-ing on the go.:bomb:

Pretty much expected for a handheld (non-PC) device. And not necessarily such a bad thing. PDFs are designed to be printed; they'd look horrible on a tiny display. Plug-ins like flash obviously won't be availble (thank the vendor of those proprietary technologies). Video.. with all the different encodings, there's just no way. And audio... well, it should in theory be able to play, say, MP3 files (or one or two other formats) but come on... do you really want to use your DS that way?

That's a scary question. The answer is no.

The RFC for HTTP, for example, is 2616. You can read it at http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616.html . That's it; there are no regional variants. It's a protocol for a global network!
So how does it connect? Same way that you connect with DS Wifi games? Or different?
Im wondering this too. I mean right now my DS plays through my router, if I am within distance of my router anyways why the hell would I use my DS for surfing the net anyways(though I guess porn in the bathroom is nice ;). It would be usefull if I could like take it to the lake with me and then whip out my DS Lite to check my email and CAG...but I dont see how that would work less web browsing is through satalite or something.

Sometimes a router is nearby, but your PC is not.

Many businesses offer their customers free wireless access. Individuals may choose to share their connections. Etc.

True I guess, but many locations/most even do not have routers. More importantly though it takes going into your settings constantly and changing them to use WiFi which is a total pain in the ass. Hopefully unlike WiFi games the browser can just automatically detect a router and make use of it.

A lot of public places have free wi-fi (or wi-fi with purchase, like at McDonalds and StarBucks) at many places in bigger cities which you can use with the DSL. I think Central Park in New York has free wi-fi access. I don't think they made it so you can surf the net while you're home but rather so you can surf the net while you're out somewhere like the mall or at a park.

Of course, you'll look like a complete nerd if you do it with a DSL.

Are these DS Browser shortcomings permanent features.

Or is it possible to update it somehow, like updating firmware?

Not having sound and video is really lame I think. Don't even see the point of that extra RAM pak.
