i was curious if there was any rumours about a new DS with improved features and such? i figure it must be coming down the line at some point?

anyone heard any rumors?

nope, but at how many times they've tinkered with the GBA design I'd say it's a given, that's the main reason I haven't picked one up yet.

only talk has been about a thiner model with some other cosmetic fixs and will show up some time next year, no hardware upgrades. Don't expect Nintendo to change the hardware until the DS-2 comes out.

I hope not, just got a DS.

I remember back when I got a Gameboy (still black and white). It was a black case, which just came not long before I bought it. About a month later Game Boy Color came out. I was kicking myself for not waiting.

I think handhelds should be replaced about the same speed as consoles. Give the device 2-3 years of attention before bringing out a new and improved handheld, otherwise people will be upset with themselves for not waiting on the new and improved version. Also could further alienate some owners for the recently outdated handheld if new games only work on the new improved one.

I've heard rumors on here but that's about it. Nothing from solid sources.

they might come out with a new design. maybe brighter screen. but i cant see the size changing that much. for one thing the screens have to remain the same size because to make it smaller would affect games that use the touch screen. also the buttons will remain the same size because the 4 buttons on the right double as a d-pad for lefties. so dont expect a huge huge difference.

Screen/Button placement would almost have to stay the same, but making it look a bit sleeker otherwise wouldnt be too hard. That damn edge cuts into my hand (and yes, there are grips you can buy...but i actually use mine as a portable)

well the reason why im thinking is, i bought the originial gba and was pissed when the sp came out. cause i hated using the originial gba cause i couldnt see the screen (obviously)

now they that they have a cheap deals on both the new gba sp 2 and the ds, im thinking about going for the ds but i am thinking i should wait for the new one and enjoy the new sp since i never had that.. hmmm

The only deals on the DS are the Nintendogs and Mario Kart bundles. The $100 Target DS is a misprint so really means nothing.

Original Gameboy -> Gameboy Color = New Game types unplayable on older system
Gameboy Color - > Gameboy Advance = New Game types unplayable on older system
Gameboy Advance -> Gameboy Advance SP = Added a backlight
Gameboy Advance SP-> Nintendo DS = New Game types unplayable on older system

They've always brought out new system designs, but the only thing that ever made a gameplay difference was the Lights on the SP (until DS).

There's nothing that i can think of other than a design change that they could add to the DS.

Last one should read:
Gameboy Advance SP-> Nintendo DS = New Game types unplayable on older system, oldest game types unplayable on newest system.

It's been killing me since Dawn of Sorrow came out, but I'm still waiting for a redesign. What really helps the wait is that finding preowned DS games complete is a easy task, otherwise I'd be paranoid and be buying new DS games just to get them complete.
Good point. Thats kinda the breaking point where the SP still has a reason to exsit
Which is precisely what makes me so annoyed with the DS, Nintendo wanted to have their cake and eat it too. Now I would either have to carry around two portables, or only play my older games at home.

I think it's more along the lines of adding support for GB/C games would have increased the cost of the DS. The $150 price point (at launch) was extremely smart for Nintendo since it was expensive enough to differentiate it from the GameBoy line, but cheap enough to sway the PSP crowd into getting one.

The additional cost of adding GB/C game support is not worth the percentage of gamers that would actually use it.

I would say that we're lucky Nintendo added GBA support to the DS at all.
I think if they take out the GBA compatibility from the DS they can make it significantly thinner.
You are probably right. I was not expecting the DS to be so large when I first saw one.

for those waiting for a redesigned ds, you'll be waiting for awhile. i don't expect to see a redesigned ds until at least e3 '06, all the meanwhile current ds owners are enjoying a great library of games...

The red ds has already been hacked so that "passme" or "flashme" card can be used to play illegal backup rom. I think the new DS should have another minor firmware update to prevent these illegal activities.

In an article with CNN/Money, Reggie dropped a hint towards an upcoming DS design tweak. Apparently “as soon as [the DS] was launched, [Nintendo] started looking at ways to tweak it visually.” Does that mean we could be seeing a less podgy, more slimline DS from Nintendo soon?
Ah well... if its announced within the next 45 days so I can return my Target purchase, I'll think about it. But I don't have any real complaints about the design, other than thinking about getting that slide grip. I doubt a sleeker DS would solve grip problems, seeing as how the GBA SP is too small for my hands.
