I'm in the market for a handheld. I'm more than a little confused by all the iterations of the DS line - can someone please recommend which system I should buy? I've pretty much ruled out the 3DS due to cost. I just want an inexpensive system to play a few games on.

DS Lite battery life will last longer than the DS, DSi is better than the DS Lite however it is missing the GBA slot to play the older games but has the DSIware store or whatever it's called. The DS Lite does not have access to the store.

Personally, I would choose the DS Lite since it can play old GBA games too, mainly RPGs like Golden Sun. I never played any of those DSIware games since the games I've seen never interested me.

If you play GBA games as well, get a DS Lite.
If you just want to only play DS games, get a DS Lite.
If you want to play DS games on a big screen, get a DSi XL.
If you want to play with downloadable content, get a 3DS.

As you can see, there unfortunately is no definitive version of the DS. They each have their own strengths and weaknesses, so you have to base it on what's most important to you.

Yes, I'm getting that idea. I'm leaning towards the Lite. It seems to hit the sweet spot in terms of price and features.

Thanks to all who offered advice.

99% of download games suck on the 3ds.. stick with the dsixl

Most downloadable content can be played on a DSi or DSi XL, so don't buy a 3DS for that. Especially since most DLC sucks from Nintendo.

Buy a 3DS only if you are going to play a 3DS game.

If you decide to purchase a ds lite try and find one fairly new, most older models have an issue with their hinges and they snap very easily.

After owning all 4, I'd say go with the XL. Awesome screens, pretty good battery life, access to the store. I love mine!

Piss off.

Yeah, I plan on paying for my games.

DS Lite is my favorite. I've owned all 3 at some point, and i love the original DS lite because I still have several GBA games. The DSI XL is also very nice, though some people are really picky and feel the screens distort the image a bit. My dsi XL had a loose hinge which drove me nuts, and I hear is a common problem. The DSi is cool because of the dsi ware. It really depends on your needs. They all play ds games so you can't go wrong, though some of the classics are getting harder to find. (Besides nintendo ones of course)

First order of business, do NOT get the original model DS.

Good, now that that's out of the way... you really can't go wrong. The DSi has a slightly bigger screen than the DS Lite, and the DSi XL of course has a WAY bigger screen, but aside from that, the differences are negligible. You'll NEVER use the built-in cameras, and the online store is extremely useless. I've owned every model, and they're all great. I'd say, decide what size you want. If you want big (but will still fit in an adult pocket), get the XL. If you want small and light, go for the Lite. The regular DSi is not worth the added cost over the Lite.
