Is there anymore info on the DS web browser app coming to the states? I think the last thing I read was December.

IGN is predicting it will come to the US this year but only in limited distribution. I think only in online stores is what they said.

Opera Browser quietly ships in the US.

The DS Opera Browser's been available in Japan for months. It's also hit the European territories, and hey...Australia just got it as well. But what about the United States? Why doesn't Nintendo of America want us to surf the web on the Nintendo DS?

To be honest, the DS Opera Browser sort of...blows. It's not the fault of the Opera guys -- the Nintendo DS doesn't have a lot of processing power or memory to really give people the full-blown web experience, and there's a lot of compromising going on to get the DS to surf across the World Wide Web. You can certainly get from point A to B, but it'll be a long trip since the speed of the browser isn't what you'd consider a speedy experience.

It wouldn't take a whole lot of effort to finally get the browser in the hands of North American Nintendo DS owners, but we're guessing that the retail stores aren't really all that interested in stocking something that's entirely a niche SKU. Our prediction is that the browser, which is already available in an English language version (EU and AU), will be available in the first half of 2007...but only in an online capacity. Much like the limited release of Electroplankton. It's a safe way of getting the browsing capabilities in the hands of DS owners without really doing a whole lot of promotion.

Hmm so it sounds like even when it is released it's really not all that great. I thought it would be a cheap way for me to surf the web on a small scale from my wi-fi network since I don't have a laptop...

a browser seems so bare bones, i want a pda suite (internet, email, calander, spreadsheets, etc etc etc) dammit. im shocked that no company has made one yet.

^ Not really, it's not. I use mine pretty frequently. It's slow, yes, but not to such a point where it's unusable. If the speed bothers you, there are ways to drastically improve overall browsing speed (the dual-screen rendering mode is much faster to browse than the Overview mode, for instance - and turning off images also works wonders). It's a pretty great device for basic web browsing, as long as you're not in a rush to load a page...it can take a minute or more on some pages.

As a browser, can you access like, mobile only sites or can i use it and log in to say...hotmail to check my mail, or even here to check threads?

Why can't they just release it here? Those bastards!!!

It's a standard web browser, so yeah, you can check Hotmail or CAG. It's kind of slow-going, so it's great to just go to a site you like once (such as the CAG forums main index) and then just add a bookmark, and once you do that, it's smooth sailing every other time you want to do some browsing.

The only limitations (other than the speed) are no Flash support and no audio/video support...so you can do basic browsing pretty easily, things are not as limited as some would have you believe.

It sounds like reviewers expected more and thus are criticizing it. From what I've read, it's faster than browsing on mobile phones and pdas but slower than computers, which makes sense since computer are way more powerful than the DS. I think if expectations were more in line with reality given the DS hardware then reviewers would have been more kind.

I'm mostly upset that you can use instant messengers and the sort. That would have been sweet.

I think it's a great for you say you're looking for in the web browser. It is a cheap way to browse the internet while you're not at your pc. Just don't expect lightning fast loading and to be able to use instant messengers and flash sites.

Regarding instant messengers, eBuddy.com works fine for me. I've tested it for AIM and MSN and both have worked.

But yeah, you're right - it's not an IDEAL web browsing environment, but it's a great handheld option. Once you spend a few minutes with it, you learn its quirks and which sites will likely load quickly and which sites will give you a hard time...and once you vary your performance expectations per each site, you'll come to look past its faults and find it useful.

I've heard the knocks against this, but as long as it's not too expensive, I plan to pick it up when it's released. It could be a useful cart to have when I'm stranded in an airport or something and have no other way to access the Web besides my DS.

That's sweet. I've never heard of ebuddy.com. Well, guess I was wrong the IM part.

I'm assuming the browser will release for $29.99 whenever it hits the states. If it doesn't sell much, it might drop fast or be easy to find a deal.

I know there is an AIM Express, I wonder if the Opera DS Browser will support Java Applets? I think Aim Express does run from a Java Applet. Seems worth it to buy once it comes to the US

I thought I remember reading somewhere that it supports Java but not Flash. I could be wrong about that.

Nope, no AIM Express, and I forgot to mention that earlier, but Java applets do not work.

However, there are purely Javascript options for AIM connections, including eBuddy.com. Those work, especially the cleaner Mobile interface for it.

Hey Oops, so if you log into say Yahoo Mail, you can read your mail right? How easy is it to actually write email? Is the interface handwriting recognition similar to Palm's Graffiti? Or is it a touch-type thing?

If you turn off graphics, does it load pages really fast?

Yup, you can read your mail. I don't use Yahoo Mail, never tried it on the DS, but I've used Hotmail and Gmail just fine.

I've never used Palm's Graffiti writing interface, but I can say that the DS Opera writing interface is simply and pretty darn effective: there are two blocks for quick writing, you can hit a radio-button to determine whether the software should look out for letters or numbers/characters, then you write one letter in one box then another in the next box and you can do it seamlessly as the software detects it at around a .5 second delay. As I alluded to earlier, I've never used touch-screen writing recognition before, but I find this to be more responsive than I imagined. There are a couple of letters I sometimes have trouble with, but all in all, that works.

There is also the option, as you said, of a keypad being on screen where you just touch a letter for it to be inserted. There are also either four or five (I forget off the top of my head) buttons with common top-level domains (.com, .net, .org, .co.uk, etc) which very much comes in handy. They're customizable, so I figure you can put pretty much whatever you want there, though I have not bothered with that. I've found this keypad option to be significantly faster, overall.

You can also use the stylus to select a portion of text in either the URL bar or a form field and replace what's selected, or point directly to an insertion point, etc...that's great, though I'm sure it's standard to folks who are familiar with touch-screen devices, as I am not (beyond DS).

If you turn off graphics, does it load pages really fast?
It never loads pages REALLY fast (it can get kinda fast, but it's not as fast as our PCs), but it certainly helps. Basically, disabling images allows you to browse pages a lot more quickly and seamlessly.

When you're browsing an image-intensive site in Zoom mode (with one screen showing a zoomed in selection of the entire as-seen-on-a-PC resolution version on the other screen), it can feel very clunky to try to browse before all of the images have loaded. When images are disabled, it moves noticeably smoother and does not take nearly the amount of time to finish loading everything.

When you're browsing an image-intensive site in the Small Screen Rendering mode (where the entire page is seen zoomed in through both screens, but with background images in pages/tables disabled and colums in tables simply placed one on top of the other to allow for easier navigation/reading), the sites pretty much always navigate fairly fast, images or no images - i.e., you can scroll up and down without the sluggish feeling, for the most part. When you turn off images, it gets better, but the performance is acceptable enough with images on to where it feels almost like a negligible change in SSR mode.

Do Gamestop/EBgames stores have wifi access in their stores?

... to be able to read CAG while in the store would be sweet....

If it were $5 I'd buy it, maybe $10. Anything more, not really worth it. All the reports are that it's slow, it can't do music or video, and the DS can't connect to a large portion of wireless networks (the majority of hotels' wireless internet, the one time I'd use it). It's a good idea but I just don't see it being that useful.

Honestly, my PSP wasn't a ball of fire when accessing the internet either. Some sites were faster than others, and it wouldn't run all the apps either (from a $300 handheld game).
When you compare the speed of the DS vs. PC (surfing the internet), the DS is definitely going to be slower. I personally don't think that Nintendo designed the DS as an ultra fast web surfing machine. I think the main focus for Nintendo was handheld gaming, with Wi-Fi gaming capabilities, and keeping the price point at a very competitive level. For $129 (before the price drop), having a portable gaming device with touch screen (some voice recognition supported games), and some Wi-Fi capabilities, it's hard to beat the DS. Sure, they could make an ultra-fast web surfing, handheld gaming device, but with a price of $400 to $600. Then how many people would complain about it being way over priced? Nintendo has always kept competitive pricing on handhelds and consoles to reach more households. Why do we think the Wii is outselling the PS3? Yeah, the new controller and the more interactive gaming aspect is cool, but also the fact of $249 vs. $599. I know and have talked to a lot of gamers ranging from hardcore to leisure, and they comment on the price of the Wii, even if they think the PS3 is a ton better.

In my opinon, paying $35 to have some web surfing capabilities on a more strict handheld gaming device isn't too terrible. So, for around $170 (DS plus web browsing) gives you the options to check a sports score, news and weather update, check an email or IM, play some pretty cool games, and have some Wi-Fi gaming capabilities? Not a bad price at all! It gives you one more little thing to do with a $119 handheld. If everyone is worried about speed and what apps it can handle, or videos it can play, then why not buy something a ton more powerful, such as a laptop and spend 8 to 10 times the price of a DS.

That's my uneducated opinion...
