DSi Are you guys holding off on buying?

I'll buy a DSi when they bundle it with a Max Headroom Complete Series DVD set.

Yeah, that is true - I tried it out, never having read anything beforehand. It doesn't see the pictures on the card. That is disappointing since I was hoping to be able to mess around with my real photos on it with all the filters.

Yes, the camera, when trying to use it as a real camera, is quite lame, but it's nice being able to have pictures of my kids on my DSi that show up in the menus, and it takes good enough pictures for that type of use given adequate lighting. Or you can take oddball pictures, which are also fun to have showing up randomly.

There are some clever sounding uses of the camera coming soon. There is a game coming up for DSiWare (can't remember the name) that overlays itself onto whatever is seen in the camera lens, and that affects the game. I think there's ghosts or something. It sounds pretty cool. We'll see if it works well and if they've made the game any fun. Another game coming up lets you make custom levels by taking pictures of things. No, I have absolutely no idea what the means in practice, but it sounds interesting. The point is that it will be interesting to see what uses developers come up with for the cameras.

To me, it doesn't seem worth it. I'm just going to wait until I can get enough cash to buy a Ds lite along with a few games. I'm also hoping that Nintendo lowers the price sometime this year, hopefully at $99.99. This is just a dream, though.
 
Bought one upon launch and I'm happy with the purchase thus far. Just be certain you arent under any expectation of a DSi Virtual Console and are happy with the DSIware offerings.

I'm loving Pictobits and Doctor Mario Express is a nice diversion. Adding a Tetris would make this a no brainer.

But until it gets the killer app for you dont go out and buy a replacement for your DSL based upon "potential".
 
So instead of starting a new thread, I figured I'll just post here.

I just did the Amazon trade deal to get an extra $75 on a console purchase and have been thinking about getting a DS. I really want to get the DSi for some reason (probably because I want to get the most up-to-date version of the portable), but I feel like getting the Lite is a better idea since it's cheaper and I'll have the option to play GBA games. The thing is, the last handheld I owned was a GB Color so I don't have any GBA games. So... what should I do if I've never owned a DS or GBA, go for the Lite with the possibility of GBA games or the DSi with two cameras and slightly bigger screens?

I'm getting the DSi with the Amazon trade in deal. I bought a lite on launch day, traded it in later for a black model and then sold it so I could pay rent during a rough stretch.

I have about zero interest in the cameras or DSiware but I'm willing to pay the premium for bigger screens and matte finish.
 
Follow-up question:

What GBA games would I really miss out on if I went with the DSi? In all honesty, I'm only interested in FFVI. And like cochese, I definitely want bigger screens and a matte finish.
 
GBA games? Hmmm....

Minish Cap was an awesome game. The original WarioWare as well as Twisted. Wario Land was a good one (can't remember the number/subtitle for the GBA version). Drill Dozers. Metroid Zero Mission and Fusion. The Fire Emblem games. Ninja Five-0. SuperStar Saga. Aria of Sorrow.

There were lots of ports of great games (FFIV, V, VI, Tales of Phantasia, Breath of Fire I&II, LttP, etc.) but those can all be played via other methods. Rhythm Heaven was good but you'll have to import. I think the Rhythm Heaven on DS is better but that's purely personal opinion.

Personally I hated playing GBA games on my DS when I had it. I had an SP (with the extra bright screen) and a Micro and vastly preferred the GBA hardware to the DS hardware when playing.
 
Well the thing is with GBA games: You can all play them on your big screen with a Gamecube and the GBA player. Once I got the GBA Player I've never had a huge urge to play any GBA game on the DS again. I'm saddened by the fact you can't play GBA games on the DSI but It's much less of a huge loss then it is in reality. I think price and colors are the bigger issues for me: I want either a Dan Pink DSI or Silver.

As for games on GBA? Tons of games but I'll name a few - Advance Wars, 3 Castlevania Games (and the NES port of course), Double Dragon Advance, FFTA, the last portable Fire Pro games, Golden Sun 1+2, any Legend of Zelda Game, Megaman Zero series, Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission, Ninja Five-O, RCR Ex, Tactics Ogre and TMNT (GBA version was a side scrolling beat em up, unlike the console versions and was fucking awesome). GBA > DS Library still but DS luckily got the Phoenix Wright games for a awesome save.
 
Okay you guys have sold me on getting a DSi. I don't even know why I'm going to bother with GBA games. I have a backlog as it is, and I think the DS's library should be enough.

Yeah, but the thing is with the GBA Player: I sold that thing and my GameCube for $100 before the Wii came out. And I prefer playing GBA games on the couch while watching TV. But that's just me.
 
No virtual console = epic failure.

The dsiware games (except dr mario) are all garbage. Nintendo, no one wants to pay points for a themed calculator...
 
Looks like I'll be able to get my blue DSi after spending about $105 at Target and trading the games in to Amazon... not too shabby. Now, I just gotta sell my DS Lite. :(
 
I'd like one, but can't justify spending the money now. I just sold off all my GBA games with my micro, so I don't really need the slot or anything for the DS lite, so the only thing I'm waiting for is some good exclusive software and/or a price drop. Then I'll sell my lite and get a dsi.
 
I kinda wish I did hold off. I used it for about 40mins since launch. I seen no E3 news for even one title that justifies it. Lemmings DK but that not my thing. This year is a draught compared to last for rpgs too.
 
It looks like the decision to upgrade was made for me. On Saturday, I dropped my DS and the hinge broke off for the 3rd time. On Sunday, my wife and kids surprised me with a Father's Day/Birthday present... $130 to be spent on a new DS lite. Knowing that I'm a CAG, my wife told me that the cheapest she had found it for was $127 at Fry's. :lol: I told her that Target had it on sale for $119.

Knowing that I had $130 to work with, I started searching for the best price on a DSi. I remembered that Amazon had a trade-in deal towards the purchase of a new system and I found my answer. I sure am lucky that the deal was extended. Monday morning, I picked up 4 clearance games at Target for $57.xx and will trade them in to Amazon for a $75.75 giftcard and a coupon for $75 off a new system. So my new DSi will cost me $77.xx from my FD/BD present. :D

BTW, the DS lite still works. I just have to glue the hinge back together using Gorilla Glue. ;)
