I heard rumblings that the dual layered disc format on champions of Norrath gave people problems but that was okay with me because I'm not into RPG's but a magazine says that GTA will be dual layered so can anyone tell me what exactaly gives people trouble with the dual layered discs and will Rockstar be able to make a better disk than Sony? Please help

Man that was one long ass sentence. :p

If I had to take a guess, I'd say it was a laser calibration issue. Similar to the DRE issues where the PS2 couldn't read blue bottomed discs, this is probably the case since the laser has to be adjusted in order to read the second layer.

This sounds famliar. I think this happened when I rented Galatic Wrestling. I've had my PS2 since the release date and that was the first time it wouldn't play a game.

Any way around this problem besides having Sony replace it?

open up your PS2, voiding any warranty (if you still have one), finding a website that tells you how to reallign the laser and do it. I use to have a friend that worked at a BB that when the first problems with not reading blue bottomed discs occured, had everyone bring them back and fixed them himself. Maybe you can find someone that is willing to do this.

I'd rather have Sony replace it. I'm not so sure about opening up my PS2. That stuff makes me nervous. But thanks anyways. :D

Stuff like that makes me nervous to, butI watched someone do it first hand about ahile ago and it looks rather simple. He didn't even take that much of it apart. As for those disc skins things, I could see myself screwing them up and ruining somehting somehow. Plus like others said they are mighty pricey.

Now as a newbie I understand what people mean when they say off-topicness is annoying, I need to know what the problem with DUAL-LAYERED discs is, not the regular old DRE

I think you miss the point that both the "regular old DRE" and the problem experienced from dual layered discs (aka DVD-9) are more or less steming from the the same problem. Both come from the laser not being calibrated properly to read all kinds of discs it needs to. The laser needs to proper angled to read the disc and if it isn't it must be recalibrated.

So therefore if I don't have any problems otherwise I should be alright?

There are about a dozen or so DVD-9 games out there, basically one that have a ton of cotent. You may be able to find a list if you google it or somehting. Some more popular ones are:

MGS 2 Substance
Champions of Norrath
Xenosaga
Samuari Warriors (I think)

There are also more to come:
Gran Turismo 4
GTA 4

Have a friend lend you one or Try one out if your system works with one it should be fine I would think.

Why don't the game company split the content of dvd9 disc to two dvd5 (normal 4.7 GB) discs? 2 DVD5 disc should be a lot cheaper than one dvd9 disc and avoid the disc read problem at the same time?

Samurai Warriors is not DVD9 it only take up 4.05 GB disc space.

If they put a game such as GTA on two discs it would be a pain in your cheap ass because you would have to switch disc between areas

Square Enix is doing that with Star Ocean 3: Till the End of Time.

Oh well, I was kind of taking a stab at Samurai Warriors anyways.

As far as I know the problems could randomly pop up anywhere in the game play, but I think it happens most when something is loading.

As for splitting it to two discs, I agree, and I know some companies have gone this route in the past. Capcom split Devil May Cry 2 into 2 DVD5 discs. However, in Europe they went with a single DVD9 release instead.

Wrong. ALL DVD discs are dual-layer and dual-sided regardless of how the content is arranged. This is part of the basic specification for the standard and the tolerances involved requires that all discs closely follow the spec. Don't be thrown off just because there is artwork on one side that is never used. THe disc is still constructed as a multi-layered saidwich with the two sides glued together back to back.

The ability to read both layers is a requirement to carry the official DVD logo on a drive. At one point very early on in DVd history there were a limited number of manufacturing sites that could handle putting data on the secondary layer. Likeiwse some very early video players handled layer transitions badly, causing a noticeable glitch in the movie playback. One of the first RSDL releases, Terminator 2 (not the version with the extra WMV HD display) has a transition that is easily spotted although they tried to hide it in a jumpcut. (This is where Linda Hamilton is stabbing the picnic table.)

The cost today for a DVD-9 is a trivial increment over a DVD-5 disc. It makes mastering the disc a little more complex but is already extremely common for video releases and great burden. A second DVD-5 instead would add significant cost and also require the player to switch discs at some point. A complete waste of the capabilities of DVD.

Note also, if your PS2 is having trouble with DVD-9 games you should als be having problems with a LOT of DVD movies, especially anything in the Superbit series.

DVD-9 is used for everything on Xbox. No problems there in my experience.

Most movies are DL so if your ps2 can't read a dvd then it probably won't read a DL game like San Andreas.

Also getting inside your PS2 is EXTREMELY easy. There is only one thing you need to be very careful about - and that is not to break the silver cable that goes from the base to the cover you remove. As long as you gently remove the cover and place it right next (touching), to the base you should not have a problem.

For me the whole gear fix didn't do much. What allows me to see dvd movies again is getting a can of compressed air and shooting it directly onto the lens structure making sure the whole thing moves around a lot. After a few seconds of that I can see dvd movies again, until another dre pops up.

I started playing Champions this week and so far things have gone smoothly. I also was a little concerned about the dual layer thing but I've only had one lock up and that was after a nearly 4 hour session. I'd say you're probably safe in your preorder.
