Dungeons and Dragons help

CAGiversary!
Do any of you play DnD? If you do I need some help.

I am looking into playing DnD but I need some advice on how to get started.

1. Find some nerds.

2. Buy some cloaks.

3. Forget about girls.

4. Start rollin' them dice.

Just kidding. In all honesty, it has been so long since I played D&D (we are talking about the early '80s here) that I'm not sure I can help you.

I haven't played since 2nd edition BUT I frequent comic/hobby shops in my area. They often run demos or allow people to play there. Check out one in your area if nothing else there are usually fliers hanging by the door of people looking for others to play with.

You could even put up a flier yourself saying you are a noob looking to join a group/learn.

If you meant stuff on your own check on the Wizards of the Coast website, they usually have overview Faqs.

I am a nerd, I hate cloaks, Girls are icky, and the dice will be rolled.

The first two are true but the third isn't. Wow, your like one of the really old school table-top players. Early 80's. Thats like the golden age of Role Playing.

The new fourth edition just came out. All new rules. So you cna start on the ground floor.

I recommend three things. The third is optional.

1) Dice. Plenty of dice. d4, d6's, d8's, d10's d12's and d20's. (d12's don't look like they're used that much anymore.)

2) The new 4th edition books. Found below. All three will run you shy of $70 bucks

3) I suggest stoping by a hobby shop and seeing if you cna get a small sheet of 1 inch squares.
Something like this.

Also, pick up some cheap plastic minitures. Nothing fancy. But get a lot and an assortment. Get 8-10 that your friends can pick to represent their characters. then have a bunch of another type to represent different monsters and groups of monsters. Get the books first, and then you'll see why minitures are handy.

Basically, a lof of the new powers are dependent on positioning on the battlefied. This was done on purpose to make players buy their minitures crap to have to play properly. But you don't need that stuff. You could even use just spare dice to represent players and monsters. Like, make all your left over d4's orcs and a cluster of d8's a dragon. But it's nice to have a few minitures. Not necessary but it helps.

Then gets some friends, download some character sheets, and I also suggest getting this sheet or handy printable powers for your game.

*I highly recommend you download the pdf file with the power cards.

1) I already have all of the dice I need.

2) I am already saving up for the collectors gift set of all the 4th edition books I need.

3) I am going buy my local hobby shop next week to ask around and hopefully pick up somethings.

4) Does it matter what kind of miniatures I get?

5) Thanks for all the help.

No. As I said, you don't even need miniatures. It's a money sink. But a lot of the powers involve positioning like...

Combat advantage (from flanking) to determine if you can sneak attack or get bonuses.
Area Effect. For example, Burst 1 means it affects everyone around the caster. Burst 2 would be 2 squares out, and so on.
Special benefits (free shifts, movement, splash damage, blocking, etc.)

It seems like 75% of the powers seem to have a modifier that depends on where the opponent is on the map and what he's doing. It's probbaly the one thing I dislike most about D&D since it evolved. its become more and more heavy on miniatures.

So if you decide to really start playing regularly, I suggest you get a basic map mat and something to represent the monsters. It can even be a pack of army men you buy for a couple bucks.

Actually, as far as miniatures go, I've always used dice. A bunch of d6s that you can find at dollar stores for pretty cheap can easily be used as monsters/characters. Just assign a number/color to each character/monster and place the die with that number up top. So much cheaper then miniatures, and if you happen to lose one, oh well, just replace it with another.
