Usually codes from Bluray give you access to the HD version.

Also - Since all Blu's don't necessarily redeem as HDX - There is a forum post at the VUDU forum with a spreadsheet - On it you can see what redemption path people took and what quality they got (example: redeemed on VUDU, Flixster, Movie studio page, ...)

At least then you can see what others are getting. And in some cases, the different redemption paths don't come out the same. I think most people recommend redeeming direct on VUDU if possible.

I don't know how helpful it is because it's per movie and it doesn't give multiple options. I've found that basing it on the movie studios, you can get a good idea of what you'll end up with...but I need to get more data/verify some things:

  1. SonyPictures (Columbia, others?)
    DVDs will be SD, but the last couple I've redeemed allow you to upgrade to HD for $5
    Blu-Rays will be HD
  2. WarnerBrothers (who owns Flixster)
    DVDs: ???
    Blu-Rays: ??? (mixed results so far)
    Alot of my Blu-Rays have ended up SD, but forum posts on Vudu say that they are now giving HDX versions as of October 2012 for original Ultraviolet releases.
  3. Universal
    DVDs: they don't normally include digital copies on DVDs (I think?)
    Blu-Rays: most of my releases have been HD digital copies, but I bought some old releases like Babe on Blu-Ray and it gave me SD
    * I think this is probably the best direct redemption process, they allow you to get a digital copy from them or Vudu, they they give you an option of iTunes/Amazon/Windows Media. If you choose Amazon, you should still be able to redeem the original code on iTunes as well. (Also, I need to test it, but I'm wondering if I would've redeemed the code for Babe on vudu, if it would have been HD.)

PLEASE don't take any of this as gospel, I'm pulling it together from a couple quick notes. And I'm going to make another spreadsheet of all my movies, with original sites I used and whether or not I could've redeemed directly on Vudu. I haven't tried Vudu as a first redemption for any of my movies yet.
