DVD drive not recognizing any CD or DVD

Status is listed as working properly. Everything looks good, but I can't get it to read games or movies at all; keeps telling me to insert a DVD.

Any advice or suggestions? Not the most expensive component to replace, but it should be working...
 
Try reinstalling the drivers for the DVD drive.

Also, do you hear spinning like it's attempting to read whatever you put in the drive right away? If so, it's possible that the reading tool has become too dirty to read. Though getting a cleaning disc is about the same price as buying a new drive these days.
 
Hmm, drivers are up to date and it looks like the disc tries to load. I can't really hear the disc spinning, but the light is blinking and there's a steady beeping coming from the drive.

Thanks for the advice though! I used to have a cleaning disc somewhere, just not sure where that's at.
 
Bleh, reinstalled the drivers and then the firmware just to make sure but no dice. May still be under warranty though, so it's possibly not all bad news.
 
By chance, have you recently played an old game with one of the early versions of SecuRom? Or was that Starforce that used to overwrite the firmware on optical drives?
 
One other possibility I also didn't think about is that the wires inside the computer connecting the DVD drive are a little loose. Of course if you're voiding a warranty by opening the case, don't void it and just ignore this all together.
 
Have you tried uninstalling through device manager and rebooting to let windows reinstall? Also there are registry entries that can become corrupted, upper filters and lower filters, can't remember where they are located at the moment.

Edit: found it: local machine\system\currentcontrolset\control\class\4d36e965....delete upper filters and lower filters if they're in there and reboot.

And people wonder why some gamers hate DRM...

Starforce was much more damaging, but SecuROM had its share of issues. Both were known to damage CD/DVD drives... Wouldn't hurt to check and see if either one is on the OP's system.
