Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but I didn't see a "correct" forum. I'm interested in some region 4 DVDs on Ebay, but I live in the US. Can anyone recommend a good site for region hacks? I don't play DVDs on PS2 or Xbox. I'm only interested in making my set top DVD player play them.
How do these hacks work? Do they allow all regions or what? Do I have to change something every time I watch a DVD from a different region?
Would I be better off spending three times as much and getting a region 1 disk?

The easiest thing to do is just google the make and model of your DVD player along with 'region hack' or something and you should get some results.
Hacks usually involve either a button combo to access a hidden region change or manufacturers setting screen/menu in which you should be able to set it to '0', i.e. region free. The other main sort of hack which is less common is a firmware hack which you download to your pc, burn to CD then stick in your dvd player to change the current firmware to play region 0 i.e. all discs. This later method obviously carries some risk, cos if the firmware doesn't work then your DVD player is screwed so read up on any comments from other people who have used the firmware.

:)

I never heard of Region 4. I know there is a region 0, Region 1 (USA), Region 2 (Europe) and Region 3 (Some parts of Asia).

All the regions are based on the electricity output of all those countries.

There's six regions actually, the three you mention then Regoin 4 (Mostly Australia and Central/South America), Region 5 (Most of Africa, East Europe, Russia and India), and Region 6 (Mostly China). Also I thought (though I could be wrong) that the regions were created so they could control distribution.
Maybe you should just buy a region-free player? You could probably find one for less than $100.
jbox.com carries a region-free player for $68.

The one I have is a cheap player, Magnavox MWD200F. I don't know if it's region 1 or 0. How would I know without buying a disc from another region? I didn't know region free DVD players were sold. I'm going to Google to attempt to find the region of my DVD player.
As far as playing DVDs on the computer, that's a no go. I can't sit in front of this monitor for 2 hours watching a movie. I need my LaZBoy and a big screen. The link sanjuro provided is what I'm looking for, but my player isn't on there.
