Dynasty Warriors 7 - Dropped to $39.99 @ Gamestop

Here is a question: Would Dynasty Warriors 7:EXTREME LEGENDS be a good starting point to start playing these games? These types of games never crossed my path, so I am just wondering.

Any game works considering they are all basically the same game. Yes there is some difference between say an Empires and a regular Dynasty Warriors, but overall they are pretty much the same.

If you played Dynasty Warriors 2 you would have essentially just played Dynasty Warriors 7, but with slightly worse graphics. I love the games, but they are worse than Call of Duty in terms of actually progressing a series.

It doesn't really matter which game you start with. The story isn't that important and the majority of these games are the same when you break it down. I feel bad for the people that buy them year in and year out *cough*my brother*cough* despite me telling him not a damn thing has changed. They add a character or take one away and change the scenery a little bit, but the core gameplay of the game hasn't changed in almost a decade.

Based on reviews, probably not, as it does not give you much in the way of back story. However I have played them all since DW3 and I still don't really know what is happening for the most part.

Thanks everyone for the information. I'll get the game once it goes down in price then. Probably $20-$30 price range should be a good experiment range for me.
what is this a joke? It was $29.99 new wks ago and $20 used from gamefly
Where is it $29.99 now?
You don't get "more game for the same price". XL is an expansion pack. It can be played on its own, but without the original DW7 you can't play Story and Conquest modes with the new features.
Really? Well thanks for letting me know that.

D7 is on sale for $29.99 at least 1-2 months. The Price went up $59.99 a week the drop down $39.99. Pretty the same game you play over over not worth $20 in my book ;)

Exactly... Ticked me off too. I saw it drop to $29.99 FINALLY (which it took way too long to do in my opinion) then went to go buy it a couple weeks ago and it was $59.99! WTF?! So I've been watching closely. :/

Bought it for 360 when it launched...now that Xbox owners got screwed with XL (and I've bought every DW release for 360 since DW 5: Empires, so this especially ticked me off), it's going to have to drop a hell of a lot lower than $39.99 for me to double-dip and then pick up XL. Not even sure if I will then, either, as the game is long as hell, and I don't much feel like playing through it again on another console...but damn do I want XL...but it feels useless to pick it up without having the core game on PS3, too.

This^

I'm barely a casual fan of the Warriors series and I don't know a damn thing about Gundam cartoons. But I love this game so much it's silly.

It should probably be a lot cheaper than that, considering Xtreme Legends just came out. XL is a pretty standalone expansion, considering there is A LOT of content on the disc. If you have the PS3 version of DW7 (since XL is PS3 exclusive), then you get to play Conquest and Story mode from DW7 if you "Remix" with XL. Otherwise, you don't really need it (if you have a DW7 save, then you can import that save into XL without needing the original game), as there is a lot of content on XL.

I would try samurai heroes. I enjoy the variety of characters better and can be had for around $10
Here is a question: Would Dynasty Warriors 7:EXTREME LEGENDS be a good starting point to start playing these games? Seeing as the DW series is WAY more popular in Japan than anywhere else, and the 360 is dead in Japan, I'm not surprised that XL is PS3 only. Heck, I'm more surprised that DW7 came out on the 360 honestly.

To the casual observer I'm sure there are no changes from game to game in the series, just as I would say there's nothing changed in Madden each year since I care jack squat about football. But they definitely do change things up gameplay-wise in DW - sure, you're always slashing hundreds of people, but the systems at work around that change up from game to game. At any rate, DW7 is the best one so far imo (haven't played the XL add-on yet).

The games actually do add alot more than most people realize (probably because they don't actually play them). The problem is that they the additions often don't matter much and the games eventually become grindfests using the same strategy.

Yeah, one of the bullet-points for DW6 was the introduction of the ability to climb ladders.
DW6 was probably the most radically changed game in the series.
And was a terrible game.
Luckily 7 came out and washed away the horrible taste that was DW6.

Too bad this game is always $60 every time I check. Never once have I seen this game discounted :/ (Gamestop doesn't count)

DW:Gundam 3 is a great starting point for anyone. Easily one of my favorite DW based games ever (Excluding DW3). Such an amazing game, and the first i plat'd on PS3

As far as DW7 goes, its also quite good and i'm fairly close to platting it (Within 10 or 20 hours
