E3 2009 - MS Press Briefing - What Did You Think?
The funny thing is for me was that i have the orb sound on my phone when i receive a new text message. When the orb sound came out in the event, I thought it was my phone.
I used to have that, until I got my iPhone :whistle2:(

--------------------------

Seeing what the big 3 have to offer, I'd have to put it this way....

MS 1st
Sony 2nd
Nintendo 3rd.

Natal = many broken tv's

Also many lazy ass people. This is like when Microsoft announced that you could turn your console on and off with your controller. Now you don't even have to get your controller to control your console. How great is that shit. Now you can be a super lazy ass. Lets just hope the games don't turn out to be Tottemball all over again.

I'm not trying to hate or diss Sony but did anyone else feel that their motion controlling tech demo was probably a result from a few guys in a tech lab, plus focusing that it was a prototype was a little discerning. At least we got a release date with the Natal. I think the Project Natal, aka Eye Toy on Steroids, has a lot of potential.

Did you see those games. Kick boxing etc....this will be like the wii only people will try to be boxing and they will end up round housing their tv's.

The world is full of them. The math is scary. ;p

I'd go MS 1st
Nintendo 2nd
Sony 3rd

Mainly because the only part of Sony's lineup that made me go "Wow" is the PSP stuff... and the chances of me buying a new handheld system are slim to none. The difference between 2nd and 3rd isn't much, but 1st to 2nd is huge.
We got a release date for Natal?
Oh I'm sorry, I thought they said the device would be shipping with all new systems so I guess I thought in my mind they said this fall. I don't know why they wouldn't have this during the holiday rush anyways. They did call it a project instead of a prototype so it sounds like holiday is a good guess.

Haha awesome.

I must say I was actually pretty impressed with the Sony briefing. They are definitely moving in the right direction, the Nintendo conference didn't really do anything for me but overall Microsoft was still best overall.
Natal completely killed any hype that PS3 dildo was hoping to get. So yes, I'll give best conference to Microsoft.
I agree. The thing looked like a reject wii remote. The demo looked shaky; almost like they forced it out the door.

I would list the order of the conferences as this...

1. Microsoft
2. Sony
3. Nintendo

The gap between 1 and 2 is miles.
Same goes between Sony and Nintendo.

My thoughts on the other two conferences on why I positioned them the way I did...

Sony at least showed off gameplay demos of God of War 3, Uncharted 2, Metal Gear Solid for PSP, and Assassin's Creed 2, which all looked good. The video for FF14 looked real nice. I felt that the presenter was ignorant though, claiming that God of War 3 can only be done on PS3 (of course it is a Sony first party title) and that the Eye Toy was the first motion controller (really...).

Nintendo's conference was a snore fest. Luckily, I stayed into see the Metroid trailer. It looked pretty good. I will end up picking it up if the game can be played in 3rd person like the trailer hints at. The rest of the stuff was alright. Look how Nintendo is trying to milk francises. The big title was the New Super Bros Wii (reminds of another title Nintendo milked called "A Link to the Past Four Swords") is just another way to release essentially the same DS game for Wii with 4 players support and a few additional moves. Another was Wii Fit +. Practically the same game. Heck, the majority of what was shown had been annouced for a while.

I think it's clear that Sony's reject wii mote has been in development longer than Natal has. They showed a demo "live" on stage versus MS showing a concept video. If Natal works, then lets see you use it on stage.

The technology behind Natal has been in development since 2005.

I highly, highly doubt that anyone could need to devote 4 years to the really, really simple task of using a camera to track to distinct colored balls. It's not a new thing, technologically.

Uh, the Ricochet demo looked pretty damn live to me, and certain press members got to play Natal-enabled Burnout themselves, as well.

Wow. Four years of work and they have nothing to show other then a video? Ouch.

So tech advances take awhile. I'm not going to hold my breath, however, you can feel free since you do enjoy trolling the forum...

What are you talking about? There were live demos, both on-stage, and hands-on for press members.

...

majornelson: I got a few folks in to see Project Natal today. They LOVED IT. We were next to Steven Spielberg who had just played with it. #e3xbox (about 10 hours ago from Tweetie)

majornelson: The look on everyone's face when they see it actually works is priceless. Pure joy. (about 10 hours ago from Tweetie)

There were demos, but in a controlled environment. How well is it going to work in an actual living room, with multiple people involved. There are a lot of variables that could easily break the Natal, and I haven't heard anything regarding them yet.

They talked about that in the conference...right now it can only detect one person at a time but they're working on making it detect multiple people at the same time

Must not have been paying attention for that part then. Part of me can't wait for this to come out, just so I can see if I can break it. It depends a lot on the physical appearance of the user (clothes and all), as well as environment. Compare that to the PS Wand stuff, which only needs to see the two orbs. Microsoft's taking quite a big gamble.

There's a side benefit to all of this though. This is technology that once improved, can be used in more than just video games. Microsoft stands to make a bunch of cash from this if it works.

Nintendo is milking franchises, but where is your criticism of Microsoft?
Halo
Halo 2
Halo 3
Halo 3: ODST
Halo: Reach

That's 5 games in 9 years or roughly one every two years. We're getting 5 Mario games this year alone. Try again. ;)

Just look at how many new (to this generation) franchises there are on the 360 (MS 1st and 2nd party games and 3rd party games) and compare this to the new core franchises on the Wii. Don't get me wrong this E3 is all about the sequels but I have been impressed with all the new franchises on the 360 compared to other systems especially the Wii.

Super Paper Mario
Mario Strikers Charged
Mario Party 8
Super Mario Galaxy
Mario Party DS
New Super Mario Bros.

My point was not that Nintendo is somehow not milking franchises, but that MS is doing it too.
Well yes, but not much more so than any other company with a successful franchise.
Many, many companies are milking franchises. Make a successful game? Perfect. Now make 10 more.

bottom line, its been in development since 2005 and yet.. no "Live" onstage demo. That video looked like a commercial. If its ready to play and they're showing it behind closed doors, then why not show it to everyone. Maybe it was just a judgement call and doesn't mean anything in terms of the product being ready. But if you're confident to show it behind closed doors, then by all means show it live on stage. It wasn't like they didn't have time.

Did you not witness that one dude painting on stage, and that one girl hitting the balls towards the blocks as well?

I was coming back to edit that! Never mind, I made a mistake, I only saw the video of the product. I was looking for it on live as well, but I guess I missed the real video. Well damn, if they got it working in game, then, its almost ready for release, probably just waiting on developers to get their game on board as well. You know I would it sports games would have a referee mode where you could watch the game and ref using the camera. I probably wouldn't use it but for 20 minutes, but it'd be hella fun to try it out every now and then. You could have the players coming up to argue and interact with you. Could be awesome.

The video of the product/commercial was totally fake...it's more of a "this is what to expect when the product releases" sort of deal.

One thing that I feel is that, the periphreal doesn't feel forced, its like a natural part of the system. I guess I feel that way because it's not a "controller." Now pretty much every game on Wii can be ported over to xbox... I'd love to play some Trauma Center w/ Natal or w/ the Sony Motion Device.
[I always wanted to play that game on the Wii, but I wasn't buying the system for it]
Many, many companies are milking franchises. Make a successful game? Perfect. Now make 10 more.
Man I grew up with Nintendo games but I just got sick of other platforms getting new IP games, (new original ideas) and more variety of good stuff from third party devs. Sure everyone milks their franchise but how many work on new ones?! Dante's Inferno, Brutal Legend, Modnation Racers, Bayonetta and many more new IPs look great.
My point was not that Nintendo is somehow not milking franchises, but that MS is doing it too.
I never said Microsoft and others (sony, konami, capcom, etc) weren't. Nintendo just does theirs way more than other companies as Pete's list showed. It was just my feeling on the Nintendo conference and yes I do have a Wii and DS.

But to add to the list the future games of Mario since you listed future Halo games...
New Super Mario Bros Wii
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Mario and Luigi: Bowser Inside Story
Mario vs Donkey Kong: Minis March Again

Natal look awesome but how would the no controller concept work on FPS without the game being on rails? Like how would you control your movement and aiming? I think in the long run Natal is mostly gear towards the casual market.

I was thinking about that.
Possible solution, hold your arms at a 90 degree angle to be stationary, extend them towards the tv to move. Fire off your gun with a recoil of the wrist or if its a western theme use your other hand and hit the end of your "virtual" gun. Lol just brainstorming.

Other solution, use your feet as your navigation, foot forward move forward, back move back, Left and right moves respectively, haha.

Or maybe use the rotation of your head, look to the left or right,(not too much of course), to move your reticule or gun. Switch weapon by clapping hahahahaha.

Most FPS games would be a disaster without a controller. Natal is not aimed at all at the Xbox userbase that exists, it wants what the Wii got + even more. They did not purchase 3DV for millions so people could play Halo better, they did it so they could try and do their own blue ocean strategy like nintendo did, get people who arent gamers into gaming.

The technology is fine and all, but we'll see if they have the killer app to really push it forward. If nintendo didn't have Wii Sports, the wii would be nowhere right now. You need a killer app to get people to buy it. I honestly have no faith in microsoft to do that, but who knows. The milo thing seemed like a pedophile simulator to me, so something along those lines will not be it me thinks.
