My only problem with this is the degree that EA's taken it to. Ads in sports games are fine to an extent, and can add realism - a hockey game would just look odd without anything on the boards, for instance.
That said, this year seems excessive. Flooding the game with candy bar ads and their corresponding stupid puns is unnecessary, and these pop-up ads in game would just aggravate me.
Just because you
can doesn't mean you
should. If you're going to sell ads in the game, would it kill you to try and limit the amount, or to make them a little more discreet?
I'm not thrilled about their DLC scheme or the way online play works (and is charged for), but those are other topics entirely.
You want to solve this problem?
STOP BUYING SPORTS GAMES!
I mean it. I'm sick of half a Gamestop's used section being previous year copies of Madden. Stop buying these disgusting things and they will stop making them. Or do you want the used section of every store piled high with sports titles? I despise the things, they're little more than wasted plastic.
I found a shop with $4 N64 titles yesterday, and I think out of maybe 50 games, only 5 of them were not sports games of some kind.
Suck it up. Millions of people buy sports games, and will continue to for as long as video games exist. They flood the used markets because, really, who needs a copy of Madden 2007 when it's three years out of date? This, too, will continue forever.
Sports are popular. Video games based off sports are popular. No boycott you could ever hope to organize would make even a
slightly noticeable dent in their sales figures. Get over it.
Don't buy ANY EA crap and they will stop.
The NHL series is excluded from this rule. xD
Not buying "any EA crap"? If that includes all of the games they publish, I guarantee that they'd start by making cuts to other genres before they even thought about touching their golden goose. Sports games would be the last to be axed or see changes.
That "any EA crap" would also include Rock Band, and I'm not giving that up.
It's annoying for sure. In one of Burnout Paradise's 1.6 or 1.7 updates, I had to be repeatedly exposed to Subway's $5 foot-long promotion on nearly every block. I'm glad they changed it in the last update, and promoted their in-game vehicles instead.
I played for a while last night. Now, there's a bunch of McDonalds dollar menu ads all over the place...which, thanks to their red and yellow coloring, make it hard to find the auto repair drive-throughs or the smashable billboards.
