EA Playground

Yeah, i'm interested in this one. My two year old likes to watch me play Wii Sports all the time and it's starting to get old. I thought this looked like a good game in the same vein. I'm interested to hear what people thought of it.

*bump*

I was thinking about picking up EA Playgroud but I can't find many reviews on it, plus I like to hear more first hand reviews. Do any of you have it - if so what are your thoughts on the game.

i've read that dodgeball is awesome but the rest of the game pretty much blows, i'm probably going to rent it

I bought this to play with the family on Thanksgiving day. Dodgeball was my least favorite game. Yes, the games are simplistic, but it's pretty good multiplayer enjoyment for younger kids. My son is 8 and my nephews are 7 and 6 and they all enjoyed it.

"Kicks", a mini soccer/volleyball game, was probably my favorite. "Wall ball" is basically tennis, or handball was also pretty good. "Paper racers" and the obligatory shooting mini-game "Darts" are very cool as well.

Tetherball and dodgeball I could do without, maybe because I sucked at them and was consistently beaten by children under 10. Shooting hoops was nearly impossible for me to complete by the time I got to the "make 15 shots in 30 seconds" stage. Bug catching is also one of those frustrating, pointless minigame excercises that makes an adult say "Why the fuck am I playing this again?"

Your avatar child is free roaming the schoolyard playing pickup games on "dares" from the other schoolkids. Play games and collect stickers to unlock other games, harder opponents, and new dares. It's reminds me of carnival games. The games are short, simple, mildly amusing, You'll play for an hour and put it away until the next time the family comes over.

Serious gamers please ignore this one and save your Wii hating smarminess for a thread that gives a crap. These are obviously casual games for the young, the old, and the short attention spanned. Hard to say it's worth $40, but for $30 it's a good value. If you can get it for $20 or in a b2 get 1 it's a must buy if you have kids.

Wow, wierd that this was bumped because I *just* rented it a few days ago since I have 4 free game rentals that expire at the end of the year. I played it last night with my 5 year-old and he had a blast with it. He was able to do the Wall Ball, Tetherball, and Slot Racing games but made me do the Dart Shooting, Kickball (wierd soccer/volleyball hybrid), and Airplane flying games (too hard for him for the most part). We played it for about 2 hours and got about half the stickers already, so I'd say the single-player is somewhat short, even for what it is. We haven't even tried the multiplayer yet but I could see my kids being into the Wall Ball. In fact, my two older ones were *just* playing real Wall Ball in our otherwise empty dining room (which shares a wall with my office - somewhat annoying ;)).

I certainly wouldn't buy this for $40 or whatever it is, but it is well worth a rental. You can pretty much exhaust it's gameplay in that time I'm sure. Contrast that to Mario & Sonic At The Olympics which I rented last week and we only played for a total of 1 hour or so. That game is OK, just not as good for little kids since it requires a bunch of reading for the controls and is not nearly as intuitive. My 5 year-old gets a real kick out of the Tetherball control (swing the remote when the ball comes around - pretty simple). Most CAGs would find that tedious, but kids might love it. So, yeah, I agree with bmulligan - stay away if you are a Halo-munching "hardcore" Wii-is-2-Gamecubes-stuck-together-with-duct-tape type of CAG. But if you have little kids it is a decent choice. I'll buy it eventually when I can find it for around $10 (which is fairly high praise as I wait for $5 on most games ;)).

Edit - as I was typing this the kids went out to play the game on the Wii! Now all 3 of them are playing, ages 5-10.

Edit #2 - I should add, as a more direct answer to slavefive, should he deem to check this thread again, it is most definitely NOT a Wii Sports substitute. Don't expect it to have that level of polish and control.
