CAGiversary!
The demo is now available for download.
It's fairly rough cut as there is no announcing during the fights. The demo's "MMA 101" tutorial is not much of a tutorial as it is a "We see you pushed this button, this is what it does in this situation". As somebody trying to get the fight mechanics down, I didn't find this rather helpful.
Before I get into the fight controls, I want to first state that somebody had it in for UFC Undisputed's too oft held-down power punch toggle button. In EA MMA, that's the feint button. If you were used to the Undisputed control scheme, get ready to eat some shots while you're flailing fakes for a little while.
That said, the default setting is Total Punch Control which should be familiar to the Fight Night aficianados; the right thumbstick controls jabs and straights with flicks while quarter circles control hooks. Kicks can be added the mix with the push of a trigger button. Clinches, sprawls, takedowns and submissions are assigned to face buttons; the simplified ground/clinch game takes alot of the frustration out of trying to get the mount but repeatedly having to roll back and forward between side control and north/south to get there.
I had a bit of trouble toggling between punches and kicks; a simple jab snap low kick combo can be difficult at times and trying something like a body blow, hook, high kick is absolutely discouraging with Total Punch Control. Attempting to stuff a takedown in the middle of a striking battle can be frustrating at times as it requires discipline pretty quick reflexes to stop flicking the thumbstick to try to mash a face button. On the plus side, the simplified sprawl and submission controls make it as easy to submit an opponent as to knock him out. It definitely brings in some relief for those that felt Undisputed favored striking.
Overall, I would say it's a welcome addition to the MMA game landscape, but it could use a little more polish judging from what I've seen in the demo.
