While I was at work today at EB, my manager told me that we're going to be changing our name. EB Games is being phased out, and we'll be getting new signage and a new front light changing us to Gamestop. We'll be starting sometime next week.

I'm bummed about this. While I was growing up, I was always going to EB in the mall. It was one of the two highlights of a mall trip (the other was racing through my lunch to go and dump 3 bucks in the mall arcade) when I was a kid. I still remember walking in there and spending like an hour playing the 3DO Wing Commander 3.

I know it's not gonna change anything, and that we've operated exactly like GS since the merge, but for nostalgia, it sucks.

I remember when EB was a seperate store and was much better than Gamestop.

Now Even the Website is just Gamestop with EB at the top.

Oh well. In my opinion, As long as we have Best Buy were okay.

I did the same exact thing TC.

The food court was right near the Arcade (which is now one of those fucking preppy cloth stores with the loud music blaring). I always got Arbys because it was the closest to the arcade, even though I like pizza more that was on the other side :)

I remember when it was called Electronics Boutique ;_;

Prolly the consumers couldn't pronounce it and after maybe caving into politcal pressures during that French/Freedom-fries nonsense they dropped Boutiques part because it was French.

GameStop will be like Starbucks? One on every corner?

Hopefully they will change the interior of EB's...that yellow counter is nasty.
what about funcoland? Are they going to change too?
Now there is nostalgia. My fondest memories of Funcoland are those commercials where you had the one hand shut a gate on buying your new games and "Funcoland's" hand accepting your trades. Does anyone know where this commercial is still viewable?

I remember one of the lines from the old commercials. "Where do you think you are Fuuunnncoolllaaand?" Still gives me a chuckle.

I don't know what this means for me. Because there is an EB Games and a Gamestop near me. Gamestop is newer, but they suck. Plus, everyone likes the EB Games (They're bigger, and they have a much better location near the Target).

Haha, the Waterford, CT mall has three in it - an EBGames, an EBX, and a Gamestop. I wonder if they'll finally realize how stupid that is and consolidate.

Interesting... most malls have an EB Games and a Gamestop. So now two Gamestop stores in one location!?

Gamestop really is starting to become the Starbucks of video game retailers.

I also liked the way EB looked over GS.

Hopefully with this name change they won't turn it into a typical GS, douchebags or somewhat idiot fanboys as employees. I know how some of you work in GS's and you might make it cool but I don't like the GS's around me so much.

That, and the fact that way back then (I'm talking early 90's here) there was far more PC stuff in them than console, and it wasn't all games either. That was the highlight of any mall trip I was able to take back then. I agree, it will be kinda sad not seeing the EB logo around anymore, even if it is just a shadow of what it once was at this point.

Don't...that wound is still to fresh.

This 'change' is purely cosmetic. All EB's have been Gamestops for over a year already.

I used to have an Electronics Boutique, and an 'EBX' in my mall. I think EBX was 'Electronics Boutique eXpress' or something.

There was also

- Babbages
- Software Etc.

All absorbed now into the hungry maw of GS.

I wish there were Fry's or Rhino's near me. The only real alternative I have to EB/GS is Game Crazy, which I do love, but its just one location in my area.

That's what I have, EB Games and an EBX. Guess they'll both be called Gamespot now :/

I have absolutely no alternatives here, either. Well, besides the retail stores like BB and CC.

Yeah, every EB I know is near a gamestop so I dunno what they're going to do (I swear to god they built a new gamestop near a pretty new EB near here after they had merged).

I also have fond memories of the old electronics boutique with basically all PC stuff...

The answer we were given to this question when I was still working for EB (before they closed my store down at the end of 2005, right after the merger) is that as long as all of the stores are making money, they'll keep them all open. Of course, I think that's probably lies, and eventually they'll just consolidate on some formula that makes no sense (probably keeping the Gamestop brand stores open over the EB ones...I'm pretty sure that's how my store got closed down...2 Gamestops, 1 EB in the same city and I know at the time we were making more money than either of the GS stores) just like most of the other stuff they were lying about at the time...but that's what I know.

Well, Gamestop has an odd strategy. In my town (not a small town, but not that big either (86,000 people in 2000). Westland, MI is the 10th biggest state in Michigan.

Anyway, There is a point where you could almost throw a rock and hit 4 different Gamestops/EB Games. One is in a mall, 1 just outside the mall going one direction, one just outside the other direction, then one about 1/2 mile away. It's pretty rediculous. I like going to Gamestops (and it's nice because, you can usually find one store with the 3 games you want for a buy 2 get 1). But, still, I can't see how this is so profitable for them.

I know Starbucks theory is that you won't go out of your way for coffee. It might be right, but honestly, are you going to stop and drop $20-$50 on a game, but decide not to because you have to make a left turn instead of a right?

That was the only game store I ever went to as a kid, looking in vain for FF2.

Ah yes.. the good ol days. 2006 was a great year. I can still remember it as if it were last year.

I think they were both crap at the B&M level, but online? EB blew Gamestop clear out of the water.

GS has been getting shittier and shittier anyway.

Their deals for the most part have been sucking major ass. Trade 2 get an extra $10? What crap since they are giving you $20 for a $50 game, if that.
It only took them over a year to change the name!! Glad to see they're keeping up on these things.

That's pretty much how GS is run....
I think they wanted to fool the consumer that they were seperate entities for monopolization of the B&M Market. Now everyone knows, so its time to take the blinders off.

Suncoast/Sam Goody did the same thing, as well as Specs/Fye

Yep. You can intuitively picture it:

Upset Customer: "Oh yeah, well I'll just buy from EB then!"
Clerk:" ...Ok, go ahead."

:whistle2:o I live in waterford. Right now its pretty stupid but at once it was software etc, funcoland, and eb. Now its all just gamestop lol....
I also have a Gamestop upstairs and an EB downstairs in my mall.
same here, but the ebgames I go to the most often is in a strip mall about a mile away from me. So it looks like it'll be a gamestop.
There will be THREE GSes at one of the Columbus malls now. There were an EB Games, an EBX, and a GS.
Isn't the EB literally directly above the EBX, or vice versa? Don't recall what mall that was, I think the one north of the city (Polaris?). That's about all I recall from our weekend getaway in Columbus.

hopefully like starbucks they'll oversaturate the market too quickly and better rivals will start to appear. and just like starbucks theyll start their overall business decline

Starbucks has rivals?

News to me.

You are exactly right, good sir. It is in Polaris, and yes, the EBX is directly below the EB Games. I wonder how this will work. I bet once they officially change the names that at least one, if not two, of the GSes will close in Polaris. It would make no sense to keep all three, it's not that big of a mall. At least with the different names you can possibly fool people into thinking they are different companies.

My EB turned into a Gamestop about two months ago. Store is still the same, all that's changed is the sign. The counter, TV, and receipts still say EB.

It's sad to see the EB name go.

Gamestop, for me, will always be Software Etc. Back in the late 80's, early 90's when my parents would take me to the mall, the highlight of the trip was going to Software Etc. I would litterally spend hours in there just browsing.

I got a feeling that we'll be seeing EB's closing either during the summer or right after the christmas season due to closings for more profits.

Gamestop is like Starbucks, there's one pretty close to everyone now. The Dayton Mall has a Gamestop on the first floor and a Funcoland on the second(which the Funcoland is supposedly closing soon). Then a EB Games down the street from the mall. If they're all making a lot of money, I don't know how since they're all the same thing(unless some people are playing favorites).

We have a gamestop and an eb in the same mall. One store is on one level, and right above it on the second floor (almost parallel) is gamestop. I hope to God this means that eb is closing in that mall.

Shoot, our stores in the mall is still called Software Etc. We have both that and EB Games. I think they are too lazy to change the sign, it's been named Software Etc. for years...

I also have a mall where an EB and a Gamestop are within 100 yards of each other. I'll actually kind of miss having both; if one was out of a game, chances are the other had it.
