is it ok to sell potentially winning lottery tickets on ebay?

the reason i ask is, i just got a Deal or No Deal scratchy ticket with 1 case left to open. its either a $10 winner or $1,000,000 winner. would it sell?

pic here

well that would ruin the whole idea :) if there was a way to do that, every convenient store clerk would be rich. and i don't like scamming people. my friend offered $300 for it, but either way i would feel bad. either stealing his money, or watching him walk away rich. would have to give it to a complete stranger.

Sell it man! I really doubt it's $1,000,000.....I'm not familiar in the area but I doubt each amount is equally weighted...in that out of all the chances $10 is by far the most common...so even though it's down to those two it doesn't really change anything statistically as it's still most likely the $10.

That being said...if the chances are equal, then you gotta keep it. To be fair you'd have to sell it for $500,005 and anyone with that money wouldn't be wasting it for a chance to double when it wouldn't make that much of a difference to them.

But I doubt the chances are equal so take advantage of someone's idiocracy.

No matter what the ebay rules state you can sell anything else and have the lotto ticket be a free gift with it (thats how people get away with "selling" EQ/WOW accounts on ebay)

FWIW, my roommate used to buy the DOND lotto tickets from time to time, and I think it came down to $10 and $1,000,000 like every time he did it, haha (and it was always $10, of course). I'd definitely take the $300.

Would it be possible to take it to a lottery kiosk and scan it and see what amount comes up and then just walk out? If so, then that is your next step.

(According to Illinois Lottery.)

You can't check instant tickets at kiosks, only at actual machines (the ones a clerk has to run). Problem with that is, is that if it's a $10 winner then as soon as the store checks it, the lottery machine will automatically count the ticket as being cashed. Then the ticket is voided- the store keeps it or rips it up. If the store lets it go, and someone attempts to cash it in again, then the original store gets huge fine.

If it is the $1000000 ticket, then the machine won't cash it (unless it's some store that just happens to have $1000000 in cash lying around) and return the ticket.

But store isn't supposed to check tickets that haven't been fully played.

Statistically, you would think you have a 50-50 chance of getting $1 million, right?

But I'm betting somewhere on the back, there's a section of fine print that details winning the $1 mill is 124,132,409,184x1 odds and the $10 is 20x1 odds. They're not going to give away $1 mill that easily.

If you want to be a jackass, take the $300 from your buddy and test your friendship against the root of all evil. If you want to eBay, maybe some idiot will buy it, but I seriously doubt it. And if you want to get it over with, just scratch the damn card and move on with life.

I definitely wouldn't pay more than like $11 for it.

I seriously doubt anyone with an IQ over 80 thought that for even a second.

better yet, quit gambling and holding people up in line. why not give $XXX straight to a school or some teacher.

It's better than giving it to some casino, which then puts 50% into an off-shore banking account and 50% into the bank accounts of the tribe (who then spend it on alcohol, cigarettes and drugs).

[/controversy]

Ebay won't let you sell it, but your idea is good. I'm skeptical as to whether or not one could find out if the ticket is a winner without turning in the ticket.

Additionally, can't you check online to see if the $1,000,000 has been won already? I remember reading that some states were being sued for continuing to sell tickets after it was already known that the big prize had been cashed in.

Just scratch it. At worst, you're out $290, but at best somehow, you have that one in a billion chance to have actually won.
