EBGames Gift Cards... USE THEM ONLINE NOW!

CAGiversary!
Sorry if I'm late on this issue... but BIG NEWS.. unless you heard it already... in which case... slap me.

EBGames.com is now accepting EBGames Gift Cards (from in-store) - Online - as valid payment for online purchases....

http://ebgames.com/ebx/product/giftcard.asp

You know what this means? All the crap you've been trading in can now be put towards... well... games that are cheaper online as opposed to the games in-store.....

Birthday and Christmas returns and exchanges that you might have in card form... can now be redeemed for all the $3.00 Rogue Ops and $10.00 1080's you could wish for....

For many this won't make much of a difference... but for people like me that love trading in crap for store credit tacking on coupons and what have you... this is a blessing I've been waiting over three years for...

Anyways... this should be fun.... and I hope everyone gets the chance to take advantage of their screwy online/in-store inconsistencies.

Take care!

One thing I know i can mention right now...

Only Cards with a PIN number can be used online...
which means... if you are getting credit on your EB EDGE Card.. (also known as the GMR card) you cannot use it online because it has no PIN.

Solution?
So you traded in a crapload of games and got like... 57.00 on your edge card.... good as cash at EBGames in store... so.. use your Edge Card to buy a new Gift card for $57.00.... that card... the true "Gift Card" can then be used online with its PIN.
PRESTO!

Have Fun!

Heh, nice post. I never thought about using the B&M ones online. I tried the online ones to receive them at a B&M, using pre-order with in store pickup and that wont work. Suppose cheap games online is better than a impatiently handed expensive game. :)

I actually already did this...traded in my edge credit for a nice gift card that I could use online. Definitely a good thing.

Caveat: Unless I am missing something, one will lose some credit doing this. The GMR credit can be used to make tax free purchases, but if it is a straight-up transfer of $57 GMR to $57 GC, then that tax amount is effectively lost (unless the GC actually gets $57 + tax put on it). Not much of a loss, but it could add up. Correct me if I am wrong.

This is true.....

This should be moved into general discussion anyway don't you think?

Do you have to use the whole total of a gift card all at once? I guess we could buy them in blocks of $10.

You would lose the tax free part and might have to pay shipping . . . still is a good thing if you never buy in-store (like me . . . I see shit there).

Trade in credit is put onto the GMR/Edge cards. When you trade in games and use them as payment, there is no tax charged. If you trade in $50 worth of games and get a $50 game, even swap. If you swap the GMR credit for a gift card, you lose the "no tax" benefit, as there is no way for them to track that this gift card was originally tradein credit. So, to make to most of your trade in, use it right then, or keep it on the GMR/Edge card. You will save on tax that way.

Makes sense for me also. Tax here is 9.25%. no tax with the trade ins helps out a lot, almost $5 per $50 game.

True true... the tax-free purchases with in-store credit can be great.... and if they have what you want in-store... then why on earth would you want to order it online?

But for some folk... who just arent peeing their pants for anything immediately priced behind the counter... its certainly in their best interests to sit back with a PIN Gift Card for the next random $3-10 deal on EBGames.com.

We've all seen them... and we all know how much of a bitch it is for getting those prices in-store...
This is precisely what I'd use it for...
I have never heard this tax free business before. Interesting....
I think it can vary by location but the logic is like this:
When you bought the original merchandise that you are trading in, you paid sales tax on it, so now when you "swap*" that merchandise, they would essentially be double charging tax wise if they charged tax again.

* This is where the YMMV comes in. If it is a swap, then the logic above applies; however, if they look at is as buying the used games from you and then selling you a different game, tax would apply again.

this is really a great thing for kids.

Go to the store buy a $20 gc and use it online when a deal comes along.

i'll be taking advantage of this now.
