Elite: HDMI-->DVI cable helo

So im interested in using a HDMI to DVI cable to hook my elite to my computer monitor. It has a DVI input, not HDMI. I want to save money by not buying a new television or montior, and this is my only choice.

Has anyone done this before?? Will it work?

Also, how would the soudn come out? If my console is just hooked up to the monitor, how woudl i get sound out of my speakers? The speakers are hooked up to the computer.

any help is greatly appreciated.
 
im not exactly sure what that is. The HDMI-DVI cable seems to be really cheap. and most direct method for me.

It works. I'm using a cheap 3 foot $5-$6 HDMI to DVI cable that I bought from E-forcity via Ebay on my 19inch ASUS widescreen. There was no sound this way so I left the regular 360 AV audio cords plugged in with no problem.

Because HDMI to DVI looks better than VGA and in my case (and probably WarPath's aswell)l I'm using a LCD monitor with both VGA & DVI inputs for my 360 & PC, so I can leave the VGA hooked up to our PC, and the HDMI from the 360 to the monitors DVI input this way I can switch back and forth by just hitting a button the monitor instead of having to unhook the VGA everytime you to use each.

well im glad to know the visual part of the set up works.

My monitor doesnt have AV hookups thoough...so im not qute sure how the sound is gonna get through.
 
you'll have to modify some 360 A/V cables by taking off the casing around the input part so that it fits when HDMI is plugged in. then hook up the audio outs to your PC speaker set up.

My bad for not specifying, my monitor doesn't have AV input either. One of audio cords from it are plugged into a AV television next to my desk that I watch Direct TV on, the other is plugged into my Gamebridge audio playing through my the PC speakers so if you could drag an old AV TV into the room your not using or buy a Game Bridge really cheap and use it's audio through your PC speakers, either will work.

I wouldn't use my PC monitor's built in speakers even if they did work, their crap LOL

thanks for al lthe help so far guys. Ive been googling & researching around. Could i somehow use the Red/white plugs from the xbox package and combine em with the 3.55 mm RCA adaptor? Then i use the RCA adatpr and connect it to the computer speakers.

Does this sound right?

BTW does the xbox have any internal volume adjuster?? Cuz my speakers r horrible when it comes to voluem adjustment. Only certain volune level works because of nouse cancels out. So ther volume i set is quantized...like quantum mechanics!

Im looking at the second pictre. However my problem is, my PC speaker doesnt have a hole to stick the adattor to. My speaker connector is sticking out. So i don't know how to comebine both the RCA converter thingy and my pc speaker. Both have things pointing out rather than one with a hole.

For audio you just need to go to radio shack for a female to male converter.

There should be little to no difference between VGA and HDMI for Xbox 360. I dont see how you have to unhook it every time since you can just use dvi for pc and VGA for Xbox 360 and works the same way.
 
Realistically you're going to need Microsoft's HDMI cable kit anyway so the price should be roughly the same...I'd just hook your 360 through VGA and your PC through DVI. I can notice a lot more difference on like the Windows desktop between VGA and DVI than with the 360.
 
DVI is a better picture, but I don't know that you can really tell on the Xbox. It's going to be MUCH more noticeable on your PC, even just for basic stuff. The Elite comes with the HDMI cable pack. With the arcade or regular you're going to need to buy it separately (or either way buy the VGA cable pack separately).

You could try to find some kind of DVI switch, but personally I think it's easier to just have your PC on DVI and the 360 on VGA.

HDMI to DVI on my 360 seemed to help the sharpness "just a little" in comparison to VGA, but yes VGA looks about the same. The problem for me is my PC does not have DVI, so HDMI to DVI to the 360 & VGA to the PC is my only option.

thanks for the info. so i guess not much diff. between VGA and DVI. At thsi pt, id be happy with anything that worked. I was looking at the audio hack link, where u open up the plastic casing of the AV cable. Im wondering if theres any risk w/ electrical shocks, electrical fires, signal inteference? or any other problematic side effects?
