..for an addiction to sleep pills. Sorry to get a lot of your hopes up.

(CNN) -- Grammy- and Oscar-winning rapper Eminem is being treated for a dependency on sleeping pills, his publicist announced Thursday.

In a short statement, Lauren Burns said Eminem is "in the hospital under doctors' care. He is being treated for dependency on sleep medication."

On Tuesday, Eminem announced he was canceling his 10-city European tour, which was supposed to start in Hamburg, Germany on September 1 and end in Dublin, Ireland September 17.

In a statement on his Web site, the singer said he was being treated for "exhaustion, complicated by other medical issues."

It did not mention any dependency on sleeping pills and Burns did not elaborate on what treatment the star was receiving, or where he was hospitalized.

The site said the European shows "are not expected to be rescheduled."

The 32-year-old rapper -- whose real name is Marshall Mathers III -- has won nine Grammy awards since 1999.

In addition, he won an Academy Award for best song for "Lose Yourself." The song was featured in the semi-autobiographical 2002 film "8 Mile," in which he starred.

Eminem's critics say his lyrics are violent and offensive to women and homosexuals.

By the way, rap fan or not, you guys should check out 8 Mile. It's a great movie.

Maybe he can make a new song called "Hypocrite", in which he talks about how he hated his mom for being addicted to pills, and how he'd never do the same thing to his kid who he "loves so much". Yeah Marshall, you really turned the family around. No repeating the cycle here.

Better yet, his daughter Haley should write that song.

I'd guess that the sleeping pills were because of stress, I think his mom was addicted to mind altering stuff..

I hate you. Here I was, all ready to throw a big party, and you let me down again, Scorch.

He is not a hypocrite IMO. I mean his mom only worried about pills nothing else. Her whole life was about drugs. In eminem's case he is a muti-millionaire and addict to pills. and like someone else said his mom was into some heavy drugs.

8 Mile was a horrible movie, although Eminem did act alright in it. He cancelled all of his European concert dates as well. I guess this is his "retirement" gift.

8 Mile wasn't horrible.. why do you say that? And yeah, he was a decent actor in it.. I thought 8 Mile was good ;/

actually its fairly easy to get addicted to sleeping pills. If you have trouble sleeping and constantly use them to fall asleep most likely u wont be able to sleep without them. Hence the addiction, thats why when I was having trouble sleeping my doctor didnt want to give me sleeping pills for their ability to easily addict its user

Aren't sleeping pills like non drug drugs? Don't they just make you go to sleep? Wouldn't he just use them at night? I can see why he'd need treatment, but I don't see why (maybe because I have no idea what the effects of addiction to these are) this is really a bad thing in terms of family impact. Does it effect behavior, or anything?

to address a lot of posts in this thread: i've heard of people getting addicted to sleeping pills...it happens a lot...there is nothing hypocritical about it...sleeping pills are legal and anyone can buy them...they're used to help you fall asleep if you're having trouble doing so...living the life that Eminem lives, i'm sure he has a lot of tight schedules in which he has to fall asleep at different times because he has a concert, meeting, etc at different times of the day...not to mention a family to take care of (not that other people don't have worse problems, but other people also take sleeping pills if they can't sleep)...anyways, after you start taking sleeping pills, your body gets used to them and it makes it harder and harder to fall asleep without them...taking sleeping pills to help fall asleep is not hypocritical...his mother used illegal drugs, abused them and obviously led a horrible life...now if he were to have been overdosing on them just to get high or feel some kind of effect other than sleeping, then he'd be a hypocrite...

next...8 mile wasn't a horrible movie...watch it again

next...for those of you who are saying, "crap, not dead yet" and other asshole shit...what is your hate for him? because he is successful and obviously very good at what he does? or do you just hate rap and/or "wiggers"? listening to his lyrics (not necessarily his singles), you can't deny that the man is funny, educated and one of the best rappers ever...unless of course you've already pre-judged him

I dunno, I think people mistake "rapping with affect in your voice" with being "lyrically talented".

I hear him rhyme words with the same word in his songs pretty often.

Examples:

And I am, whatever you say I am
If I wasn't, then why would I say I am?
In the paper, the news everyday I am
Radio won't even play my jam
Cause I am, whatever you say I am
If I wasn't, then why would I say I am?
In the paper, the news everyday I am
I don't know it's just the way I am

And all of this controversy circles me
and it seems like the media immediately
points a finger at me (finger at me)..

-------------------------------------------
The only difference is I got the balls to say it
in front of y'all and I don't gotta be false or sugarcoated at all
I just get on the mic and spit it
and whether you like to admit it [*ERR*] I just shit it

----------------------------------------------------
Sunglasses with elton john's name, on my drag wall
I'm out the closet, i been lying my ass off
All this time, me and dre been fucking with hats off

[Dr Dre:]
Suck it marshall

[Eminem:]
So tell Laura and her husband to back off
Before i push this motherfucking button and blast off
And launch one of these russians, and blast off
[Hailie Makes Explosion Sound]
Blow every fucking thing, except afghanistan on the map, off
When will it stop? When will I knock the crap off?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's three songs, two I knew and one I just picked at random. Anybody can rhyme "me" with "me", or "off" with "off", that's not special. The only thing that seperates him from other rappers is that he puts force behind his voice when he says it.

So it makes him sound smart/important. It's more of a trick than anything else.

Heh. I bet that Detroit's the only place in the country where this is front page news. On both of our major papers.

I mean, I'm not surprised...but it seems just a bit out of proportion. Especially since this is the first story you'd see buying a paper out of a box or from the top of a pile. :)

I don't quite get the "not dead yet" comments, though. What the fuck do you have against him? Wishing death on someone isn't appropriate at all, even if you don't like what he's produced. Why not just ignore him instead?

Not every line has to include end rhyme, you know.

Look at the last example - the rhymes you should be seeing are back/blast/blast/map/crap. True, they aren't perfect rhymes...but if you're going to criticize rappers or songwriters for not having a different rhyming syllable at the end of each line, then you're going to have issues with most of the industry.

I believe thats the song that you can play in reverse and it says I am eminem, I am eminem...

Secondly I fully understand where you are coming from with the rhyming the same word with the same word. I never noticed this about him and out of curiosity will look more at his lyrics. That really bugs me about rappers or singers.

I will leave it at that for now.

Eminem acted well in that? Really? I figured it would be kind of a stretch for him to step into a role as, you know, himself.

Month old topic? ;o

Anyway, I remember when "My Name Is" first came out, I thought, "Wow. A breath of fresh air." Not enough for me to buy his album, but I thought Eminem was an ok and, more importantly, funny rapper.

Then, as the singles and albums went on, he, as cliche as it is, "sold out". Embarked upon the glam side of rap. Trite, self-indulgent horseshit. I never liked him enough to listen to him, but when I really started to hate him was when he started having random "beefs" with a rainbow of various celebrities.

I also can't stand how he did another 180, thinking he's some sort of wiseman or profit now. Contrary to popular beliefe, oval framed glasses don't make you smart.

No wonder he's so grumpy all the time and such a prick... I guess sleep deprivation really affected his sparkling personality.
What is with all these idiots bumping month old and older topics to the first page??
