Epic Mickey - $10 bonus credit @ Amazon - November 30th, 2010

I haven't played it that much, just got bad the 2nd boss, but I couldn't find the camera that difficult.

The musical score outside the game is great, it's just not that pronounced in the game.

I wouldn't say it's a bad game, but the over-hype had definately toppled it.

Unless you wanted a remake of a 2D disney game, it's definately great to see it on the Wii.
That doesn't do anything for me since most of Disney's games are pretty terrible (although they're trying to change that). What blows me away is that this is Warren Spector. He seemed really defensive about it in Game Informer...and it's like dude, your game sucks.
Since I don't get Game Informer anymore, I had to look it up. What he was trying to do is defend the camera problem, which to be honest was a pretty lame defense when most 3D platformers get it right. Fact is, you expect to be able to move the camera whenever you want

And I don't know about the Disney fan thing. MAYBE if you have knowledge of all these obscure 20s, 30s type Disney shorts? I don't have that much knowledge about them so I can't judge.

But that's not what you think when you think "Disney Fan". Disney fans are going to get a lot out of Kingdom hearts, where you've got stuff the average person has actually seen, from 40's stuff clear through to stuff from the past decade or two. On top of that Kingdom Hearts looks and sounds great, with all the voice actors they could get.

This has basically no voice acting, and if the graphics look like anything, they sure don't look like anything from the 40's on, and are horrible judged on their own merrits.

In fact for that matter, Kingdom Hearts 2 had this awesome sequence from like Steamboat Willie type era, and IT was awesome and looked awesome...

So...MAYBE Epic Mickey is cool for some VERY specific fans of Disney, but for most it's just entirely generic.

Maybe I should have been a little more specific: it is the Mickey Mouse fans who should be the most happy. Given that the title is "Epic Mickey", that should be expected.

I think it's awful. It's dark, murky, doesn't look like anything, has this lame "theme park" vibe to it, etc.

It is a dark, twisted version of the Magic Kingdom. If you didn't like that, well, the game must not have been for you. But, it was no grand secret that it was going to be anything but.

Mario Sunshine did more and better with this IMO, and I'm sure I've seen something similar to it before, though I can't place where (sort of De Blob, but I know there's more than that too). I don't remember seeing ANYTHING interesting with that mechanic in Epic Mickey, as far as I got. And the control for it was super frustrating, far more so than the camera IMO. Just moving around in this game sucked.

I'll agree that in some ways not enough is done with the paint and thinner concept. I'll also agree that the controls for using the paint and thinner take some getting used to, in that the stream is very direct and you have to think about being in the right position to hit your target. Neither of those things are gamebreakers for me.

Also nothing's saved when you exit an area and come back, making it feel even more pointless.

A common flaw of many games, not exactly unique to Epic Mickey. Not really an issue for me.
Not at all. The high expectations really were from the fact that on the shrinkwrap of the game was a sticker that claimed that it was deemed the GOTY for Wii at E3, yet it can't compete at all with Nintendo's top 3 releases of the year- SMG2, K:EY, and DKC:R.
Actually, it wasn't as far as I can tell. It was nominated for many awards but didn't win any of them.

No, the hype for this game started over a year ago when Epic Mickey was the cover story on Game Informer and got amped up with Disney's presentation at E3. A lot was expected of this game, but it never quite lived up to the hype. Certainly I can say that the first two games you list are certainly better than Mickey. (Haven't played DKC:R, so I can't judge that.) That being said, there is enough good there that I still enjoy the game even if it didn't end up being one of the best of the year.

For me the camera is still about the least of it's problems, though yeah...think how AMAZING the A.I. camera is in Super Mario Galaxy! Part of why that game works so well (without just supporting the classic controller) is they actually, unbelievably, but a fantastic camera. (Ugh...I could compare every single aspect of these two games and rag on Epic Mickey )

Yeah, maybe I just don't know enough (remember enough?) Mickey stuff...which makes me vaugely disapointed with myself

Well I've never been to Disney Land, and don't like setting games at theme parks (because to me theme parks are sort of trying to accomplish the same thing games can actually do-transport you somewhere else...so transporting you to a theme park just...comes across as WEIRD and unpleasant to me whenever it happens).

Regarding it not being a secret, probably not, but I avoided 99% of coverage on this, since I was going to buy it.

Yeah, but to me it REALLY stands out here because of how the game is designed, and also who it's by. It's all this "choice" stuff, and then it turns out you spend the time fixing stuff and it doesn't even stay fixed. I can think of all kinds of examples from platformers to RPGs where stuff you do actually "sticks", and to me this feels pretty glaring. It wouldn't be a deal killer for me, but it's just one aspect of many that stands out as poorly done.

Deus Ex is easily one of the best games ever made...so that right there makes people give this a shot, only where Deus Ex gets almost everything right, this gets almost everything wrong, and gets things wrong that Deus Ex got right 10 years ago.

IMO it's the biggest disappointment of the year, because it was coming from one of the most celebrated creators of all time, and then...

If this didn't have his name on it, I think even WITH Mickey it would have been largely ignored. Of course without either, even in an underserved genre there are SOOOOO many better choices (like The Munchables! Which has to be one of the most overlooked platformers in years!)
