Every PS3 owner needs to buy 30 games for Sony to break even?
That would be the US launch. The first Japanes PS2s sold carried a considerably higher price.
Actually, no. If you'll look at the wikipedia article I linked, you'll see that it sold for 39,800 yen. I don't remember for sure what the exchange rate was back then, but at today's rate that is less than $350. I actually bought my first PS2 in Japan a little after the launch and I know I didn't spend more than that.

If things are calculated on a purely per unit basis you now have machines that have a decent shot of making some net revenue for the company. But collectively it isn't so easy. The debt from all of those previous machines is still there and unlikely to ever be covered by those machines. This is where the sins of the elders are vistied upon their descendents.
I believe this is exactly what happened with Sega and the cumulatitve debt of a succession of failed consoles (32X, Sega CD, Saturn). The Dreamcast was already in a big hole when it was released and couldn't withstand the hype of PS2.

Damn, Sega had a lot of dogs, didn't they? The dreamcast was good, but I'm still bitter about the Sega CD. I'm just glad I didn't buy a 32X.

Yeah I can't blame people for being so pissed off at Sega back in the 90s. I know we're all sad about the Dreamcast failing, but I have to admit with all the shit Sega pulled before that, they really had it coming.
