Anyone been following this story?

Woman has cancer - it's in remission, but she needs a bone marrow transplant. Everything is lined up when her insurance drops her line a stone, leaving her to wither away and die.

Thankfully, her community surrounded her with love and hope, raising the funds to grant her life.

Awesome people. Horrible, nasty insurance company. Obama was right - these evil insurers need to be stopped.

An example of a person who didn't "work" the system and got screwed. I am glad it worked out for her in the end.

If you're serious, welcome to the fold.

The only people who think American healthcare is just dandy have either never had to use their insurance or have gold-plated insurance.

Here's hoping the bill helps to even out the balance of power a little and leaves the party of 'hell no' with egg on their faces. Shame on them!

this would be similar to those "gotcha" clauses on Credit cards and online banks.

Some of that just needs to be cleared out in writing that anyone could understand. I'm sure if she knew that taking the check would nullify her insurance, she wouldn't have done it.

I've never had any issues with my insurance.

the best part about this is that the SSA solicited her to take the money. Why do we pay govn employees to call people to offer them money that they are not asking for?

What's really odd - and, perhaps I'm wrong, I don't have any personal experience here - but from what I've heard, there's usually several hoops one has to jump through to get Social Security payments when they're qualified. In this case, the recipient was personally contacted and offered the money. I don't think this was some grand conspiracy to get out of paying for the transplant... but it isn't consistent with my previous knowledge (admittedly, little) about SSI.

My friend is married to a deaf woman. He got a phone call from SSI letting him know that they are eligible for 2k a month because his wife is deaf. He makes 65k she makes 75k. guess who just got a new boat? I totally believe this story.

One more anecdote. When my father in law came of age for SS, he was offered more money for my (then minor) brother in law. Guess who had beer, pot and ski pass money?

That's pretty much what happened with my Mom years ago. Only she struggled and saved up the money for it herself and had the operation s she needed while raising two children by herself.

You guys do realize that it was medicaid, a state sponsored insurance, that turned her down, right? Medicaid programs are pretty barebones and crappy...

Weird. Of all the times someone has posted a story where someone gets screwed over by an insurance company and thus we need to reform everything - this is the one time you make a hateful comment toward the person posting it...

I thought Obamacare was going to invoke the death panels.

;)
Well, yeah... they're starting already. The goal of our government is for everyone to have Medicare or Medicaid... and as premium rise for private insurance, we'll just develop more of a class system in which the wealthy will have their private plans and all of us schlubs will have crappy underfunded medicare and medicaid that'll turn down stuff left an right.
