External hard drive use?

eldergamer

CAGiversary!
So I think my 6+ year old desktop has about bit the dust. Even after a virus scan/removal it's still moving super slow. It takes up to a minute to open a new tab in IE and minimixing back to the desktop makes the whole screen re-draw slowwwwwwlllly....

What I'd really like to do is just get like a 200 gig external hard drive, put all of my music and family photos on there (which shouldnt be more than 50-75 gig, I guess) and then access those files from my wife's laptop.

The thing I'm wondering about is mostly burning music onto cds and loading things onto my mp3 player.

Is it speedy to acccess things form the external hard drive in order to burn things? Can I download and store directly to it?

And I'd really only like to spend $50-$100 for the HD. Any recomendations?

Thanks.

But (I know this sounds stupid) Can I burn CDs directly from the external drive? Or do I need to copy everything from the external to the laptop to burn? Does the same concept apply to synching an mp3 player from an external?

You can burn from the external hard drive, just select the stuff you want from it when you browse from folder to folder.

Go with Western Digital. Great warranty, and IMO, the best brand out there. We get a bunch of WD and Seagate at work, and the Seagate drives fail more often.

I'd get a Samsung F3 1TB for $60 and a 3.5" hard drive enclosure kit for it for about $5-20 depending on where you get it/looks. Or if you want a smaller 2.5
one then a good WD drive + the enclosure kit. Unless it's cheaper to just get an already external drive, which I don't remember ( saw 750gb for $80? Or was it more... )

Yes you can, you just need to setup where the application puts the folders and you're good to go.

I agree with the top statement, usually the ones that fail are SG in my experience and others from what I've heard/seen. Samsung/WD/ da best.
Does anyone know of a good hardrive around 100GB that doesn't need an ac adapter?
Did you try reading this thread or maybe try reading 2 post above you?
and also samsung E1 is one of the best my friends are using thay are really satisfied with it,you can buy that also.
That's a camera, or there's no such thing. Unless you meant F1, which is old and F3 is superior in every way possible.

Not every SG hard drive has a warranty of 5 years.

Also work on your english if you can. ;)
