External Hard-Drives

Well From what I know from maxtor. They are not so great for internal ones but they were brought out by seagate. It does have a one year warranty which is standard. 43 cents per Gig is good to me. I would wait for some sale at Staples/Officedepot/Officemax. There you can find some coupons to make it better. Only if you needed it last month as there was a 30% coupon.

You could try to make your own. by buying a enclosure and HD. Enclosure like 30$ + $ HD

I'm thinking of building one as well, maybe even buying an enclosure for an internal DVD drive.

Im also looking for one that I can store all my pics/videos/music, and keep a emptier pc (Can also share easier between pcs) and another good reason is to use them on my 360. (USB)

Not all hd+enclosures work with the 360 tho, so Im nto sure what to do.

Actually, they now make external harddrives that have network capablities. Thats something you may want to look into if you want easily shared storage for multiple PCs/locations.

Get this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817145378.

And this: http://shop2.outpost.com/product/4596287?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG.

Compared to that Maxtor you get 80GB more, better brand name, 4 years longer warrenty on the HD, and perpendicular recording technology... for free.:)

Oh, and a $15-25 rebate (should be $25 but sometimes you get less depending on the actualy model number of the HD you receive) on the HD:http://72.3.156.41/txt/seagaterebate.pdf.

Or you can get this... extrememly cheap for some reason: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/customer-reviews/b000extxsi?tag2=fatwalletcom.
Looks like it was a price error.

Thanks for all the replies.

How challenging is the process for installing an enclosure on an internal HD? Can anyone give me a rundown?

Rundown is

Take Both out.

Open Enclosure

Set Hard Drive to master (should be that out of the box, there is a little picture if you don't know)

Match up Cables - Ide to Ide and Power to power

Plug in Usb/Fireport/whichever and plug in power

It should show up. Win xp does it auto I believe. If not you may need to install the drivers. If so install driver, restart and everything should be ok.

its not that hard. just like putting it in a case

Remember to get a good Enclosure that deals with Heat well.

yeah, looks like they mixed up the amount you save and the amount it costs

dunno if it gets honored if anyone got in on it. (probably not)

We got a 250 GB external hard drive last week at Best Buy that was on sale $100. Add a couple of Reward Zone certificates, and it was a pretty good deal, with no BS mail in rebates.
Now I have a place to store my photos, songs, gay porn, and documents.

Um... I don't think any HDs come formatted. Chances are, Windows won't recognize it until it's formatted but that's a very easy process.

But it's definitely not hard at all.

Wow - thanks for the find, psiufoxx2.

I'm a bit skeptical of Iomega, as my present external HD is an Iomega and it has failed (reoccuring reading/writing problems). Iomega had sent me a replacement after the first HD died, this being the second. The first hard-drive crashed within six months - this one, within a year.

The drive is just about to bite the dust, getting occasional writing problems, which is why I'm scrambling for another hard-drive to salvage whatever I can.

Does anyone have any personal feedback regarding said device?
