So, how many of you are playing through the original Fallout right now? I'm hoping quite a few what with the recent GOG.com freebie promotion.

Those of you playing for the first time, what do you think?

I decided to dig out my old original CDs and reload Fallout 1 last week. I've probably spent 10-12 hours playing already. But I never did finish the game...and I think I found out why last night. Your NPC party members are morons. I was clearing out the Raiders area w/ NPC Ian last night...and he made a headlong dash for Garl (the leader)...who wasn't even on the screen yet...passing 4-5 raiders on the way, who proceeded to unload on him. So, yeah, he died and I'm seriously considering continuing on with him, but then I'd lose my mule.

So what is everyone else doing to control their NPC party members?

Awesome, so I am not the only one replaying Fallout.

It is has been a long time since I played Fallout, I thought now would be a fitting time to replay it because of GOG and the impending Fallout 3. I never did finish Fallout either. I got to the very end of the game, but I died and I had not saved in probably about 4–5 hours. So I was completely devastated and never went back through it.

As of now, I got the water chip and returned it to the vault—that is not a spoiler because that is the first objective of the game. I sort of stopped right there for now because I got caught up in playing STALKER: Clear Sky.

You know, I have Ian as my partner and his AI is not too bad. Just make sure you tell him to stay close if you are afraid of him running off.

Oh and bloody mess is the best fucking trait ever. I forgot how brutally amazing it is. I walk up to this super mutant right, but he isn't hostile towards me so I am fine for now. Well it isn't his lucky day because I need the experience—which will be explained in a minute, albeit spoiler tagged—so I walk up, pull out my smg, switch it to burst fire, and pull the trigger. As the smg fires the super mutant progressively lost limbs, tearing him to pieces, culminating with the explosion of his head.

Haha, this other time, I threw a grenade at this super mutant, which resulted in his entire body exploding, leaving chunks of flesh on the ground.

Oh! I have a great story about me obtaining the water chip:

Ok so I am in the Necropolis, searching for a water chip. Eventually I happen across, the leader of some super mutants guarding a water processing building. Well I try and try and try and try and tried to kill him, but I just wasn't strong enough. Thats when I knew I needed to go buy more grenades and gain some experience so I could level up. I started gaining my experience by killing the super mutants outside the building and then starting a genocide against the ghouls that live above ground.

Well now I am prepared. So I walk in the door and this big ass motherfucker says, "You don't look like a ghoul." I say, "Yeah I'm not." He responds with, "I knew, I knew you wasn't a ghoul, you can't fool me."

Alright this guy wants to fight. Well he has a giant gun that shoots lasers that can cut me in half, so the odds aren't good. Plus he has three super mutant friends, one of which holds a flame thrower. Well I thought instead of going after this asshole I would kill his three friends since they are easier, and because a flame thrower is fucking scary.

So I run past him and into the hallway to meet his super mutant friends. I chuck a grenade at the three super mutants who are all standing next to each other. Out of some miracle the flame thrower guy gets so wounded that he makes a run for it.

I whip out my smg, and turn the other two super mutants to shreds. Then I run after the retreating flame thrower wielding super mutant. Heh heh, he reaches a dead end, meaning that his only option is to turn around and stare into the barrel of my horrifying smg.

While this is going on the leader is making his way towards me. Luckily I am in the room with the sewer grate, leading to an old vault with a water chip. I jump down there without hesitating and go and grab the chip.

When I climb back out of the man hole, big ass mother fucker is waiting for me. I have a surprise though. I arm a stick of dynamite and place it next to his feet. I then make a run for it because I don't want to be caught in the blast r...

BOOM! That damn dynamite exploded prematurely, fucking us both up. I get up and have enough time to throw two grenades at him, both of which hit him directly.

After this, the leader is heavily wounded and starts to retreat. I make a run for him, but fuck! I am too slow to catch up to kill him.

But, wait! Ian is able to get a little closer than I am, but he is still pretty far away. Bang! Damn it Ian missed. Great this guy is going to get away. Ahh but Ian has one more shot left in his turn.

Bang! Thud! Woo! Ian killed the bastard!

Just thought I should share that story since I think it is really epic. I love Fallout. There are so many ways you can approach a situation and the gameplay is timeless.

Also as a note: When I applied the high resolution patch, it made the game IMMENSELY more playable. Instead of being nasty and stretched, with heavily pixelated graphics, Fallout now looks like a beautiful 2D isometric game.

Haven't touched fallout in a while. Beat the first one and didn't get to finish the second one. With the third one coming out, I might start playing fallout 2 all over again.

The very ending of fallout one was epic (even more fun with the gory perk)
You know, I have Ian as my partner and his AI is not too bad. Just make sure you tell him to stay close if you are afraid of him running off.
Well, he was set to 'stay close' but still ran for the guy in the back of a mob of raiders. I found out when you tell him to leave he just hangs out in the location you dumped him until you ask him back. So if he proves too much more unreliable on this map, I'll just drop him, solo it, and get him back afterwards.

I'm OK w/ the graphics. But I'll definitely want to try it out again when I get a new PC. Right now I've patched it up to Team X's v1.33 patch, but I'm thinking about trying out the latest NPC patch. I'd like to be able to upgrade the NPCs' armor.

Currently, I'm playing through with Small Frame and Gifted traits. After I finish, I'll have to play through with Bloody Mess.

I'm playing through it as well, I'd say I'm about 3/4 through the first one. I still like it a lot. There is a good mix of exploration and dungeon crawling. My biggest complaint is there seems to be many times where I really don't know where I'm supposed to go and check a FAQ. Also, the way the game keeps track of your current missions is abysmal by today's gaming standards.

Still looking forward to going through Fallout 2, I never really played it when I first bought it. Does it fix any of the down sides of Fallout 1 or is it just more of the same?

Also, I can't seem to find the Fallout 1 high res patch. Any links?

They also give you more control over your party in F2 so you can no longer get trapped by your own party members on some walkway or in a room.

Oooooh. I will have to download that. Oh and it took me some time to figure how to actually set up the game correctly to display at a good resolution, so you aren't alone in your confusion.

I would understand if you had problems because there are some settings you need to change. There is one setting that automatically sets Fallout to your desktop resolution. So even though I was changing the resolution in the ini file, it wasn't changing in game and 1680 x 1050 makes everything too small to read.

To fix that just change "AUTO_SCRN_SIZE" equal to zero.

Oh one more more thing of advice with the high resolution patch. If you are going to use the high resolution patch then chang the name of ddraw.dll in the Fallout installation directory because if you don't you are going to experience a lot of slowdown.

For example I changed it to ddraw CHANGED.dll. I think the result of this is that the game will use an updated version of the file somewhere within Windows.

Hey Razzuel, I've tried playing Fallout a few times and always get up to the point you describe in the spoiler text: mutant leader with laser gun. I've never gotten past that because there's no way I could ever take him. I'll give it another shot someday, I'm sure.

There are a couple ways you can deal with the mutant leader:
You could be really charismatic and convince him that you are a ghoul. I guess you could let him take you to his boss, but I never actually followed through with that because I wanted to get the water chip, not go to some prison facility.

Next time you try, instead of going straight towards the Necropolis, go do a bunch of side quests so that you can be at a competitive level compared to him instead of being a harmless bag of meat.

If you are afraid of the Vault running out of water while you are doing the side quests, you can have a water trader send water out to the Vault which increases your time limit by—I think—100 days.

You should really get past this guy so you can get the water chip because the game really opens up after you save the Vault.

OK, I gave the high-res patch another chance and it worked fine. The first time I tried it I kicked out of the game at the menu thinking the whole game would be shrunk to 640x480. Had I actually loaded a game, I would have seen that the gameplay is in high-res, but not the movies or the main menu. Or, you know...if I had read the readme file or the website, maybe.

I'll have to download the new version. I would've earlier, but my internet's been out all weekend.

have botha nd 2 is not even opened. i never got through the first due to timing.

I need to sit down and go through it sometime.

You could also look into using the SFall mod, which includes a better optimized ddraw.dll

I never got around to playing the first game, so now I'm simply replaying the second. Hoping to actually finish it this time.

I just started playing through the original yesterday (picked up the Fallout collection from GoGamer.com for $12.90). I'll play through the second as soon as I'm done, although I'm going to hold off on FO: Tactics for now. I've never played Fallout before, although I actually bought the original years ago and just never got around to playing it.

I've got Fallout 3: CE pre-ordered for the 360 of course. I might hold off on playing it until I finish the first, but not the second.

I've been thinking about playing this again, or the second, since I don't think I ever got too far into the sequel. But I do remember my strategy for how I got through the first game. Raise your perception, luck, small guns skills, and other associated skills. Get a shotgun. Call head shots with 95% accuracy, almost regardless of distance. Watch 'em all fall down. :bouncy:

I'd normally be all over answering that question...

But I actually played Fallout 1 vanilla and modded the cocks off of its sequels. Sorry.

Wouldn't say Fallout 1 has much need for mods. Fallout 2 has some community restoration mods/fan patches, but Fallout 1 is pretty much fine as-is.

Though I have issues with the colors in Windows 7, as far as I know that's only a Windows 7 issue. Haven't dug up a fix yet since I replayed Fallout 1 and 2 not long before switching to 7.
