I know some of you were hoping we would get DK64 and a few other games. Well, it looks like that may never happen if this review is correct. In a review of Wave Race 64, it stated why there were no ghost trials:

"The original game required an add-on memory pak for that feature, and the Virtual Console doesn't emulate that functionality." http://www.gamespot.com/wii/driving/waverace64/review.html?sid=6176509&tag=nl.e578

If that's true (and can't be changed via update), then we'll never see DK64, the better version of Perfect Dark, and other games.

In fact, let's name the other games that required the memory pak... Anyone?

They're talking about this:
nintendo-64-memory-pack.jpg

Which was needed for games like Madden.

Not this:

Which was needed for DK64 and Perfect Dark.

Yeah, you're thinking of the high res expansion pack.

I think Majora's Mask required it so we probably won't see that. That's too bad that we won't see certain games on the VC.

i've never used one of the memory paks, so it couldn't have been required for majora's mask. i had the expansion pak though. didn't majora and ocarina both require that?

in fact, the only games that i remember ever using the memory pak were the pokemon stadium games, which is why i never needed one.

lawlz, I didn't even know you could save your ghost on the memory card (pak?) in Wave Race 64. I remember that in Blast Corps you needed the memory pak if you wanted to have more than one save file in that game. But there's no chance of that game being rereleased on the VC seeing as how Rare kept the rights to it, right?

Really the only reason we're not seeing these features being supported is that Nintendo is too lazy to emulate them. There are N64 emulators out there that let you save ghosts, in MK64 for example, or so I've read.

The memory pak was for transferring saved games, right?

But, most games were able to save on the cart, correct?

wasn't wave race a launch title....this has nothing to do with the expansion....so yeah, we've already seen these limitations with mario kart 64 (no ghost saves on it either).

Majora's Mask was on the Zelda's Collectors Edition, while it was slightly buggy, it was being emulated so I think that should be on the VC eventually.

My understanding is that they can't bring games to the VC that didn't have battery save on the cart. Such games required the device shown in evilmax's post, basically a memory card or what Nintendo referred to as the Controller Pak.

Off the top of my head, I remember the Controller Pak being required for Turok 1, Quest 64, and Mystical Ninja starring Goemon. Real shame we won't see that last one if they can't emulate it properly :/ All the more reason to hold on to your N64s, though.

Well we most likely will never see Perfect Dark on the Virtual Console, if anything we would see it on the XBLA.
Hopefully Nintendo will update the N64 emulator at some point to allow games that require the controller pack. Honestly, how hard could it be to add controller pack support to the emulator?

Haha I clicked on this thread expecting bad news like the VC games becoming more expensive. Instead I find someone confusing the memory pak and expansion pak. It's cool soonersfan we all make mistakes.

On the topic of N64 VC games though, does anyone here feel bothered to have no rumble support either? Playing Starfox 64 when it came out was memorable to me because of that rumble pak. The controller shook with every hit you took from the enemy. Nowadays I barely notice it, but back then it was amazing. Playing the VC version just isn't the same.

Yes it was pretty amazing for that time how much better that expanision pack made some of those games look.. ah the good old days of the Nintendo 64... what a big plastic turd even though it did have it few shining gems...

Snowboard Kids 1 and 2, Zelda OoT and Majora, 007 Goldeneye, Rogue Squadron, Diddy Kong Racing, The WWE Wrestling games , Star Fox 64, Mario 64, Mario Golf, Tennis, Party, Shadowgate 64, Smash Bros, Paper Mario, Wave Race, F Zero, Body Harvest, Jet Force Gemini..

Those were my particular gems, and still there were other games that was lackluster but still fun like, Army Men Sarge's Heroes, Space Station Silicon Valley, Resident Evil 2, Aero-something

Man I hope some of those pop up on the VC, I have em on cartridge, but it would be nice to add them to the VC along with the rest of my games.

As I said before, I don't remember being able to save ghosts to the controller pak in WR64. In fact, I don't remember being able to race against your ghost, period. So I whipped out the game manual just now and read about Time Trials and the Controller Pak. The manual doesn't say anything about racing against your ghost and therefore doesn't mention saving ghosts. It says that you can save lap times (so that you can compare times with your friends wahoo!) and your jetski settings to the controller pak.
IIRC, you needed the controller pak to save the 2nd and 3rd place times in the Reverse courses since the game only let you save your best time.

So I think I'm gonna go ahead and tentatively call bullshit on that particular statement from the review. I'm about to dust off the N64 again and try to finally play through Paper Mario. Maybe I'll play a little Wave Race and settle this ghost issue once and for all.

Incidentally, does anybody here still have that cardboard insert that came with the game that explained the controls? I lost mine years ago . Haha, I think a better question is if anyone has the original N64 game!
