Seems like a quality product and hella cool and will probably be pretty limited. Thought I would give everyone a heads up.

After seeing Reidman's post, and looking on the Starmen.net forums, I'm pretty confident that these guy's aren't the type of people that would run off with their fellow fan's money.

I have an order all filled out and whatnot, I'm just waiting to fully make up my mind... Which is really just more being insane and indecisive than anything else (this is really a must-buy in my mind). I really want to get through more than just the first 40 minutes of Mother 3, too. I'm totally almost 100% in for one, if only to support the awesome work the guys over at Starmen.net have been doing for the Earthbound/Mother community... That, and I really love the series, but... Yeah.

Just wanted to update everyone(also servies as a bump for anyone else that might want to bite on this)the guys behind this just sent out an email. They have apoligized but the guide is delayed till March. However they are adding a poster that doubles as a book slip in with preorders now to apologize.

Here is part of the email I was sent.

To our Good-Looking Handbook Preorder Customers:

You're getting this email because you preordered a copy of the MOTHER 3 Handbook from fangamer.net -- so before we say anything else, thank you for your order! There's a lot to say, so here's the short version:

1) We need to delay the shipping of the Handbooks until the first half of March. We are immensely sorry about the delay, but please rest assured that we're working hard to get this done right.

2) The keychains are in production -- we got proofs recently and posted some pictures on the secret forum. They look great!

3) To help make up for the delay, we're going to toss in another free item in addition to the keychain: a small poster which will double as a book jacket. This is our way of saying "sorry for the delay" :)

Ordered one, but I'm still trying to figure out if it's a hard-back book or just made to look like one. If it's paper-back, I wonder what kind of binding is being used.
Now that you mention that they don't specify hardback, they do specify paperback.
Was really hoping for a hardback but hey even paperback this thing is hella cool. Not many gamers will be able to say they even heard of this let alone have it and I am always happy to support fans doing crazy stuff like this.

This is pretty cool, ordered mine yesterday. I've always wanted to play the sequel to earthbound, and thought about importing it on GBA. The guide will be interesting to read. Probably won't use it though until they release the game on DS or something, I'm not much into playing emulators.

you can use flash cart to play it on physical hardware

Seeing this thread awakened a wave of sadness in me.

In 1997-8ish, Best Buy clearanced out the original Earthbound for $5 (big box with guide). I picked one up and traded it in for $40 at Funcoland. I was able to purchase 2 more but when I got back to Funcoland a week later, their buy price had dropped to $8 . . . I traded them in anyway (why would I want these laying around?).

This was before ebay took off.

Let's see . . . how much would 3 sealed copies of Earthbound be worth today?

I can top you with a differen type of sadness(though being out like $300-$500 for those earthbounds is sad). When I was like 12 or so I asked for the big Earthbound box set for Christmas. My mom got me a lot of great games and a few other random things and I had a pretty good Christmas. However I didnt get my earthbound. So instead of being happy with what I had, I pitched a fit....I mean a monster fit. I told my parents how I couldnt believe that they didnt get me the main item I wanted and scramed and acted like a little brat. My mom(this part shows how I got to the point where I was)actually instead of bitch slapping me and taking the gifts she got for me away took me to Meijer and bought me the EB box set. Instead of being thankful I simply told her see I knew you were lying when you told me you couldn't find it.

I have apologized to my mom like 100x for the incident as an adult....but I still think of it sometimes and feel really bad.

Well in your defense you were a child and really didn't know any better. That's just how children act sometimes. I think it's defintely noble that you apologize for it even up to this day.

I wound up pre-ordering a guide today on a whim. It's odd because I don't even like the original Earthbound, I just like the idea that this guide has a high chance (even though it is fan-made) to become a collector's item.

I didn't like it much either. I remember buying it with a Nintendo $5 or $10 off coupon and playing it a few times and that was it.

I sold my original copy for $30-40 when I got rid of a bunch of my SNES games in about 1996.

So, I owned 4 copies of this game that people are now dying for.

a fan made would also means that it has a great chance of getting a reprint if there is a high demand

On the checkout page it says it will be a paperback and not a hardbound book. Oh well, the guide publishers charge $20 for paperback guides now that probably aren't half as good as this book looks to be.

just to answer those wondering who DIDNT play earthbound. im a huge huge hugeeeeee fan of the series. the guide is being made to look the same as the earthbound snes guide. paperpack but with lots of cool info secrets etc.. yes it is paperpack but fangamer is a very good group so im pos itll be well worth the 26 and change your spending.

I think all kids have done stuff to their parents.

Recently, I just ended up buying my mom a new car to make up for my past mistakes.

I was thinking about ordering one too but am really sad to see that it's not a hardcover version as the pictures would suggest it is. I might order one anyway though as it's still pretty cool.

This game was awesome, but I finished it and i have to say that while this fan-made guide is a cool idea, I would be more interested, from a collecting standpoint, in an original Japanese guide. Is there one?

There are several - in Japanese. I have them all! :D

I can't wait for this to be done! pre-ordered since the translation hit last year.

So if we pre-order it we get the bonus book cover? I wanna get two but I don't wanna drop all the moola so far before it ships...
a fan made would also means that it has a great chance of getting a reprint if there is a high demand
Yeah, most likely. Unless of course, Nintendo shuts this down after the first print run. Which is also likely... or that might happen before the guide hits which I hope isn't the case. Regardless, it seems like a cool item to have in a collection.

I'll probably give the fan translation a shot when I get the guide. I wasn't a huge fan of Earthbound because I found the combat system way too uninvolved. I also played the game for around five hours and I still have no party members besides Ness, so every battle consists of "Bash - Bash - Bash - PSI Rockin - Bash - PSI Rocking (out of PP now) - Bash - Bash - Bash - Bash - You Won!"

It's really tedious when your PP runs out so quickly and you have no other party members. I should probably push myself to play until I get Paula (or whoever joins up first) on my team, but the game puts me to sleep so fast at its current stage that I just can't bring myself to do it.
Glad I bumped this, seems like a lot of people are pre ordering again.
I'm glad you bumped it. I saw it when it was first posted, but at the time I didn't think it was worth it. Since I just found out I passed a tough exam (and subsequently get a decent raise from it :D), I figured I'd splurge this time around and preorder it. I've had the translation since day one, but I still haven't gotten around to playing it.

i'm totally gonna get this. EB was/is one of my childhood fav games. thanks for bumping this up or i would have never saw it.
is this site legit? (as in being trustworthy), not sure i wanna give my money to a site that i have no clue about, especially when they're selling something Nintendo could probably kill at any moment.

but i really like the package shown on the site.

fyi, i remember that some dude was selling a fan-made guide for one of their games on eBay and Blizzard stopped him from doing so. correct me if i'm wrong.
I have been a member of starmen.net for a very long time and they are one of the most trusting legit fan devoted sites there is. fangamer is something they created so they could sell the goods from the mother series and in due time expand to other games that we as fans hold most dearly. I pre-ordered this months ago. it was delayed though and it will not be shipping this month(jan).

Yeah, this has me worried too. I keep waiting for Reggie to jump out from behind a potted plant or something, "Not so fast motherfuckers!"

When will the book be complete? We originally expected to have the books shipped in January, but we're focusing hard on the details, so we're delaying the shipment until the first half of March. Sorry for the delay!
Hope it's shipping soon! :bouncy:

never got to play earthbound... but I do plan on downloading the mother 3 fan translation and I just pre-ordered the handbook!

So will they send out the keychains with the guide or did y'all already get them? I preordered back in November so I should have been in time for a keychain I think

They'll probably send all at once to save a bit on shipping costs.

I'm so happy that Earthbound has a loving community, since it has Nintendo for a parent. God, the thought of what Nintendo did to us through all those years was maddening.

"Here's a petition with enough people admitting that they'd buy your game to at least make it profitable to make Mother 3 for any platform."

"No, we as Nintendo have decided to make the Gamecube and a whole list of horribly unfun games"

"Gee...Thanks Nintendo!"
It sucks that the keychains are gone though.. I should have ordered earlier.

me too, now I'm mad i waited

This is so true and I couldn't have said it better myself!

Here is the email you should have received if you ordered the game early.....back in 2008.

FAQs

Q: What's the secret forum? How do I get access?
A: You should have gotten an email about the secret forum, but sometimes they get blocked. If you didn't get an email, contact us ( [email protected] ) and we'll get you set up.

Q: Are you still accepting preorders?
A: Only for a few more days! We had to increase our keychain order twice to keep up with demand, and a few weeks ago we finalized our order. At the rate they've been going, the preorders will be gone in a week or so.

Q: Will the keychains ship before the book?
A: Nope, the keychains and books will ship at the same time.

Q: Is it one keychain per order, or one keychain per book?
A: One keychain per book. If you pre-ordered 2 books, you'll get 2 keychains.

Q: Do I have to make another payment to get my shipment?
A: Nope, the $20+shipping you already paid covers everything!

Q: I moved -- can I change my shipping address?
A: Yes, just send us an email ( [email protected] ) with your order # and we'll get everything taken care of.

Q: Money is tight! Can I cancel my order and get a refund?
A: Sure, just send us an email ( [email protected] ) with your order # and we'll take care of it, no questions asked.

----------------------------------------------

With that stuff out of the way, allow us to elaborate a little bit.

THE DELAY
In November it became apparent that we weren't going to hit our goal of having the book shipped in January. At the time we couldn't tell how long/short the delay would be, so we held off this announcement until today. We're now expecting to have the books shipped in the first half of March.

We're huge fans of MOTHER 3 and want to make sure this book is worthy of such a great game. We've had most of the artwork and writing done for a while now, but as with the MOTHER games, the details are extremely important to us. For that reason, the vast majority of our time recently has been spent in the design/editing phase, hammering out tiny details and features page-by-page.

In addition to that, this is the first players guide we've ever made, so we're learning as we go. Hopefully the lessons we learn here will help us plan our future players guides more carefully.

JACKET / POSTER
As a way for us to apologize for the delay, we've resolved to include an additional book jacket (which can double as a small poster) with each book. You don't have to pay anything extra for this, so don't worry. If we release any further details about the book jacket, we'll be sure to make an announcement on the secret forum.

THANK YOU
The patience and support we've received has been very uplifting. EarthBound fans are amazing.
