Favorite Non-Blockbuster Movie

Since there is the Horror/freaky movie thread, it made me curious as to what everyones 'secret' movie favorites are.

Basically, the movies that never made much attention, even if they have a cult following or whatever.

Mine is probably either Sweet and Lowdown with Sean Penn or Rules of Attraction.

Although, and stfu in advance, Cry Baby cracks me up and I watch it at least once a year.

Couple of non-mainstream favs of mine in no particular order:

Memento
Shaun of the Dead (& Hot Fuzz)
Donnie Darko (watching it now)
Snatch (might be too "blockbuster" for this list - not sure)
Army of Darkness
Serenity (such a crime FOX screwed up Firefly)

Think that's about it off the top of my head - I will watch all of these EVERY time they come on :)

Let the Right One In
The Brothers Bloom
Unbreakable -- second best "non-comic" book movie after TDK
The Machinist
Daywatch

oldboy
infernal affairs
rec

the following might be blockbusters
pan's labyrinth
eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
matchstick men
about a boy

Rules of Attraction
Poolhall Junkies
Heist
Confidence
Way of the Gun
RocknRolla

I guess it's not really Non-Blockbusters, just stuff that may have flown under the radar or didn't get the appreciation that it should have.

Yes! That movie is amazing, I just saw it about 3 weeks ago after a friend recommended it. I'm considering watching it again now.

And as far as people posting Repo, I couldn't handle that movie. I watched about 10 minutes of it and quit, but it also came after watching some horror movie that was shot on a Handy-Cam and literally had like a 2.1 rating on IMDB. I wish I could remember what it was called so I could buy every copy and break them.

No doubt. It was hand-made specifically to become a "cult" movie, which bastardizes and negates the very idea of a "cult film."

To think that cult status can be manufactured when its very existence hinged, in the past, upon word of mouth and a developed/fervent fanbase in spite of a lack of studio marketing or pushes!

Some of the songs were ok at best, but poor Sarah Brightman and Paul Sorvino - far too skilled at what they do to have been a part of that force-fed travesty.

Also, add Tree's Lounge to my list. Tree's Lounge and Liquid Sky. Don't watch both in the same day.

It wouldnt have mattered, that movie was a god awful pile of shit. It was way to forced and every single thing in the movie felt cheap and tacked on, the singing was horrible even from sorvino who is actually a good singer, the music was terrible techo rock crap, the story was mediocre and you could have honestly taken a dozen characters with speaking lines out of the movie and nothing would have changed at all. Any movie that takes me 3 hours to watch cant be good, I would pause it and go put laundry in, watch a little and go fix a sandwhich, pause it, do something else.

But you know if people like it then thats cool, I just dont like it. Then again I like hudson hawk and thats about universally panned by everyone.

Well now I am glad I didn't watch any more of it. It seemed like it was going to be trash, and I just couldn't handle another terrible movie. Although that horror movie was fun to watch because it was a room full of us laughing at it the entire time. I really wish I could remember the name of it.

I haven't seen Tree's Lounge in years.

Mine would be Swingers and Boogie Nights.

You could've at least given props to Ogre.

American Splendor (amazing, we could all relate to this)

The Lookout (a great, more conventional movie, which does everything right. If you're reading this right now, watch this movie)

Yellowbeard. Excellent pirate movie spoof starring many people from Monty Python, Mel Brooks movies, and Cheech and Chong.
