Fez, what am I missing?

I've been playing for quite a few hours now and while I'm totally feeling the visual style and the music, gameplay is boring me to absolute tears.

I've read all the glowing reviews and it's like I'm playing some other game here. I amble around doing some incredibly basic platforming and simplistic puzzles, picking up yellow cubes. I pick up enough yellow cubes, go through a door to be met with a door requiring many more yellow cubes *groan*. How is this fun??

I have no real direction or goal, the map is confusing and I'm totally not experiencing the wonder of exploration mentioned by others.

Does it all become clear after considerable play time or is it much of the same?

That's what I've heard. If you just take ti at the first several hours, you aren't going to think much of it at all.

That said, I've never played it myself.

I think it was funny that the guy that created the game had a snippet in Game Informer that amounted to "the entire Japanese gaming industry sucks" yet I played his one game and wasn't blown away by it either.

The best part of the game is after you beat if the first time, IMHO...and by a considerable margin. Also, It's not hard for me to understand people disliking this game. It's turns into a fairly grueling, definitely old-school style puzzler. The second half of the game is effectively a completely different game.

The demo was alright. I felt the same way about braid, with all the praise. I didn't understand. Now what I really need is cave story on xbla. I suppose spelunky will be good enough when it comes out.

I haven't played it but apparently there is some sort of higher level meaning to the game based on podcasts I heard. My understanding is just beat the game then use a walkthreough to REALLY play it.

I'd have to agree with him on that.

As for Fez I played the demo. Not something I plan on buying but the whole retro style is charming. Gameplay was okay, I can see it getting tiresome.
