I know I'm incredibly late to the party on this one, but I swear I've owned the game forever... pretty sure it was my first CAG trade back in November of 2005 :D

I put maybe a half hour into this back when I got it, just to dick around with it. Fast forward to today... is there a coherent structure/story to this game, or is it just running around doing missions? I'm up to about 2 hours, having completed 4 missions or so - is that what I'll be doing the rest of the game? I'm just very used to my tactics games having a rather linear/story-driven main game. I don't know if I have any positive or negative feelings about the way it's panning out at the moment.

I have other gripes, but I won't go into those now unless people care to have a discussion years about this game years after the fact.

It's been like a really, really long time since I've played it, but IIRC the game does have a linear story. There's always one mission that progresses the story, but there's also a crap load of other missions to distract you. So yeah, the game is basically just running around doing missions.

I'll start with a gripe :p I hate those stupid random rules they enforce for each battle. Stupid judges.

Yeah, I never really understood the complaints about judges and whatnot till I started playing again. "Forbidden: Fight" Wha? Luckily it's easy early on so the three people I had capable of casting black magic were able to take care of things.

I really despise the equipment aspect of this... without buying something, it doesn't look like there's any way of determining if the EQ is better than what you currently have, not to mention the silliness of trying to interpret the tiny portraits to see who is capable of using what.

I think starting off with 6 people in a very Final Fantasy RPG environment, where everyone is customizable, is pretty daunting. I have no clue if I should be changing/rotating jobs for people or what, so I just leave as is unless I see some reason to change.

Hopefully I'm not too insulting to the fans of the series, I was just expecting one of those "Wow" games from what I've heard of the game, and so far it's not blowing me away. Combat is fun and intuitive though. I'll stop on a high note. :D

Terrible interface.

Griping aside, I enjoyed this game very much. I've never played FFT, so it's not like I have much to compare it to. I'm also one of those people into collecting stuff, so I liked trying to do all the missions and capturing all the animals. Looking at all the hours I clocked into that game makes me a little a sad sometimes tho :p

Yeah, I'll chime in since I'm 46 missions in after starting it back up recently. The inventory is a huge pain in the ass. As far as jobs, I've pretty much got my core group that keeps the same jobs, but my main character I've levelled up in a few different ones in case the rules call out for something other than what I usually use. It's a great game overall, though, despite the annoyances. The storyline is nothing spectacular, but the battles are still fun.

I certainly wouldn't mind. :) I really liked this game despite it's flaws. Be sure to change your equipment as soon as you master your techniques, otherwise your AP will go to waste. Weapons based skill learning was definitely one of my problems with this game.

There are missions that progress the story, but you can choose to do them when you feel like it.

botticus, if this iteration (FFTA) bores you but you've never played the original Final Fantasy Tactics please do so post-haste.

The original was an awesome game so don't let the idiots who screwed up the series by dumbing it down keep you away from the masterpiece that Final Fantasy Tactics is & *could* have continued to be.

SPOILER:

And I was told that in the end, you basically talk this handicapped kid out of his happiness. You know, that's pretty f'ed up if true.

Arkay:
Not exactly true; if so, that'd probably be for all the kids (save for Marche) who found Ivalice to be better than Real Life. The handicapped kid (Doned) accepts his situation for what it is and makes friends through his love of video games.

And they all lived happily ever after! Tra la la lala!

Marche is a dick, we all know he should have minded his own business.

Yes, FFT is a completely different beast than FFTA. To this day, I don't understand why they took FFTA in the direction they did, besides maybe gba = kids.

My dad borrowed this game from me. He gave it back with 163 hours logged. He keeps asking for more games like it.

They're remaking the original for PSP, so get the old man that.
