Fidel Castro calls it quits!

What happens next? His 76 year old brother is purportedly being propped up to become the next President for life. Woo hoo!

I’m not sure how long Catro’s brother will choose to stay in power; but I seriously doubt that Raul will choose anyone who won’t continue the Castro method of government.

Did anyone else find it ironic that Castro announced he was stepping down on Abuela ( the biggest newpaper in cuba, translates to "grandmother") online and Castro doesn't let anyone have the internet in their home?

Raul (Castro's lil bro) will take over for a while. Who knows what will happen next. Your guess is as good as mine.

I can tell you though that the majority of Cubans are very happy. In case you think I'm talking out of my ass, I'll give you some context: I was born and raised in S. Florida and worked several years in Miami. I worked with Cubans for so long that now, when I speak spanish to a Mexican or S. American spanish speaker, they tell me I speak spanish with a Cubano accent.

Without exception they all pretty much share the same sentiment: I love Cuba and still think of it as my home land, but I hate Castro and his authoritarian stranglehold on the country.

How xenophobic of you.

I now live in Pittsburgh and love it here (ridiculous I know, lol). Does that mean I can no longer really love Florida? (Hint: No.)

I really love America, but hate the executive administration that runs it now. This is probably how alot of cubans feel, only on steroids.

I use to live in Miami between 1998 and 2001 while going to college. I totally agree with you here as I heard the same things. Hell I was there when the whole Elian Gonzelez thing happened. Man that was some crazy shit.

Me too, and yeah it was. It probably didn't hurt that he was a really really cute kid.

So whatever happened to that kid or the family he was staying with?

I'm pretty sure he was repatriated back to Cuba. IIRC some CAG had that famous picture of when SWAT raided the maimi home to snatch him as thier sig (with CheapyD's face superimposed where Elian's was).

I'm sure google or wiki has the full story. The US really lost interest in it once it died down, predictably so.
I heard something about him last year i think, can't remember exactly what it was about.
Every few months there are always rumors coming out of that country that the media spits out. Like I think they said last year that he was close to death.

Honestly I think he is on his last leg and could pass away within the next few months. Better to have the transfer of power vs a massive uprising that would occur once he dies.

Ironically, I got paired up with two cuban-americans last night in a GoW match. I asked about their accents and correctly guessed they're from Cuba, or their parents were, I forget, now they lived in Miami.

Anyway I brought up Castro's death and they sort of had an "It doesn't affect me so what happens to the old bastard is irrelevant" sort of attitude. Cubans too are used to gettign the wool pulled over their eyes and seem to be suspicious above all else of the Castro regime.

To be sure, until all Castro's are out of power, it is not likely things will change over there. A few areas where Raul has shown some slight departure from Fidel's political regime is that Raul has actually acknowledged Cuba's economic blight, and concomitantly has sort of planted a seed in the minds of many (albeit suspicious) Cubans that there may be more food on their table and more money in thier pockets. As far as Cuba's civil rights record, I doubt that will shift significantly if at all.

While living in Miami, I met a lot of Cubans (how can I not, they are everywhere) and a lot of them hated Castro and can't wait til he dies, yet most of their parents had there last name changed when they got to South Florida because they were afraid Castro would find them and send them back to the country.

Seriously when he (castro) dies, I am willing to bet there will be a massive Exodus from the island to South Florida with hundreds of rigged boats heading towards the coast line. Every Cuban in south Florida with a big boat will meet them half way through and pick them up and take them back to South Florida. Of course the Coast Guard, INS, and department of homeland security won't be too happy about this.

Nothing will change until there is a complete regime changed. Even though Castro stepped down, he still calls the shots from behind the doors. It's a damn shame, Cuban has massive potential for tourism.

Very true.

I have to say that the Cuban's as a people have really thrived in S. Florida. They're a tight knit, hardworking, appreciative part of America who have the context and experience to be thankful for the opportunity America offers in both economic terms and in civil liberties; and I've liked almost every single Cuban I've met.

And the food, OMG forget about it!
