I've been thinking about buying final fantasy 11 lately and was planning on just buying the new Vaandal collection 2008 set that comes with the game and all three expansions for $50.

But now amazon has the basic set that comes with all but the new Wings of the goddess expansion for $15. Granted thats only $5 off regular price but still.

So my question is Should I get the Basic Set and wait for wings of the goddess to go down (which wouldn't bother me that much since I've heard wings of the goddess wasn't that good anyway)?

Just go ahead and buy the 2008 collection?

Wait for the 2008 collection to go down in price (assuming to would)?

Or just not bother at all?

Why Spend $50. If you lucky you can find CHEAP original version at Kmart or Big Kmart for $7. Only u missing is "Wings of the goddess". I don't think it worth $48 for expansion pack. Lucky me i scored 1 copy while back at Big Kmart for $4.90 :)

like one of the posters said, look for the originals at kmart

personally, i wouldnt get a final fantasy unless it's not MMORPG since you still have to pay 12.95/month to keep your account active..

does the 360 have a final fantasy that isnt mass online? (sorry for hijacking)

The 360 currently has no other final fantasy other than 11 the MMO. Although it does have Blue Dragon made by former final fantasy team members and supposedly a version of FFXIII is gonna show up on the system since , you know , XIII is gonna have like 5 or 10 different versions or something.

Honestly though I've never been very interested in MMOs and in turn have never been very interested in FFXI but reading up about the game recently has spurred my interest. It also may have something to do with my younger brother having become a Guild Wars devotee and watching him play that has gotten me kinda interested in trying MMOs out too.

Thanks on the thoughts so far everyone , lets hear so more if I can.

My brother and I recently bought two copies of FFXI 360 at K-Mart for $7 each. I had played before on the PC and my brother seemed excited to give it a try.

After maybe 8-10 hours of installation and patching, we finally got to play... and found it unplayable. It was laggy, ugly, and unplayable without a keyboard.

Fortunately, the account keys you get in the FFXI 360 box aren't platform-exclusive. Assuming you were to find a way acquire the PC client and expansions, you could use the 360's keys to make an account. Or if you make an account on your 360, you can still play on a PC if you have your login information (and all the software installed).

You see where this is going. The game is just flat out better on the PC. It looks better, runs better, sounds better. You have a keyboard right in front of you, and while the controls are clearly designed for a PS2 dualshock, you can change the key configuration around with very little effort. Or you could even plug in a USB controller, that works very well too and is my preferred method.

Downside is, Squaresoft does not provide a freely downloadable PC client. However, as long as you have a valid login and content ID, it doesn't matter where you get the client from. If you know a friend that has the PC version, you could borrow the disc. I'm sure if you think hard about it, you could get the client from one of your torrent of friends. Cough.

Anyway, if you do decide to play, my brother and I just started up on Fenrir, in Bastok. My name's Chthonic, his is Ohthezoo. I doubt we'll be able to help you, but you would be welcome to stumble around confused with us.

I wouldn't play FFXI unless you have friends who play it too, the grind is ridiculous at upper levels.

If you do play, be a white mage, parties ALWAYS need white mages.

If you're one of those pussies that cries LFG for hours and never gets off his ass and makes his own group, then yes, WHM is the job for you.

Not really, most of the better parties later on (particularly merit parties) involve a Red Mage since they are far more effective.

Anyway, after having played the game for 2 years, i'd say avoid if you can since it is like really any MMO, a large time investment. I wouldn't say it has the worst grind (out of all MMO's) but it's pretty steep. Realistically, if you don't have time for about 3-5 hours each session, you will not be making much progress at all because experience parties pretty much are restricted due to what other people in your level range are seeking on. Obviously you won't have a particular job(tank, healer, refresher, etc.) available at all times unless you and a couple of friends set a specific time to level with each other.

If you're still interested, go for the original starter pack as it's much cheaper and the Wings expansion is in general more content for higher level players. If you end up liking the game and sticking with it, the price for the expansion on the 360 will probably most likely drop in price by the time you can get efficent use out of the expansion material. I've quit about 7 months ago because the time investment was getting too much and it just wasn't fun anymore (dedicating large chunks of time just to play a game wasn't always possible.)

Personally, I would just buy the starter kit for the 360 and wait for "Wings" to go down in price. If you just beginning, it will be a LONG time before you even start to see the new content or even care about it.

There is enough content to keep you busy while you keep a watchful eye on a price drop.

As Lord_Ebonstone mentioned, thankfully the account keys are tied to accounts and not machines, you can also pick up this for your PC and have it on two platforms. That disc contains every expansion except for "Wings".

My wife and I used to play on our PS2 and then we got new PCs. Instead of paying for the PC version (after already paying for them on the PS2), we just bought that starter disc. We threw out the trial codes, installed the game on our PCs and logged in with our account names.

I love the game, but is a major time commitment. There are nights where I'm playing my PSP while waiting for events to happen in-game. This isn't a game I recommend to a lot of people, but if your up to it, it is the most rewarding game I play.

I think any MMO is a major time commitment; even the casual titan WoW eventually takes a huge amount of time -- either from raiding, or from grinding faction, or farming gold, or from LFG.

Let's face it, the way to "win" MMORPGs is to reach a point in the game where you quit and uninstall. Some would quote War Games here and claim "The only way to win is not to play," but I don't agree with that. These games are about the journey, not the destination.

If you're just interested in the Final Fantasy design and lore, I'd recommend trying FFXI. If you've played an MMO other than WoW and want to try something new, I'd also recommend FFXI. If you've only played WoW, FFXI is going to be like leaping into an ice cold swimming pool. You'll either get over the shock and not even notice the temperature, or your teeth will chatter and you'll be out of the pool as fast as you jumped in it.

Here is SquareSoft's new player tutorial/guide thing. Take a look at that and see if it appeals to you. You can also check out this post from Allakhazam's FFXI forums to get a library of information, guides, and fan sites which may help you decide if the game appeals to you or not.
