A Final Fantasy game with no thread? I'm guessing the $40 price point scared away more people than I thought. I'll be picking this up once someone around me picks it up.

In the news:

Mere hours after Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates hit store shelves today, pirated copies of the game appeared in the shady corners of the internet, posted for all the picaroons out there to download and transfer to their flashcarts.

Twenty minutes or so into the ARPG, however, many of those pirates found themselves greeted with this "Thank you for playing!!" screen and unable to progress. Players have the option of restarting the game from the last save point and playing on, but the screen reappears at random intervals. Clever!

Yeah, the price point is what has kept me away from the game. I wish Squeenix wouldn't release every DS game at $10 more than everyone else, just cause they think they can get away with it. Bastards.

Anyway, I'll wait and see if I can find a deal on this before I grab it. But I'm interested in hearing from anyone who has it to get their impressions, because its gotten pretty good reviews so far.

My DS cost limit is $30. The game got decent reviews but I already don't pay enough attention to my DS. I don't need another game languishing on it at the moment and certainly not one that cost $40.

heard single player mode is very very short 6 to 8 hours

not worth 40 .

i been let down big time this past month on rpg games

Mystery dungeon (didnt care for )
Wild arms xf Psp (again didnt care for)

i should get rings tomorrow by gamefly. Hopefully its good enough to hold me over till CC Comes out next week

I'll be getting it, thanks to gift cards. Some of my friends are planning on nabbing it as well, so I won't be playing alone.

$40 for a DS game doesn't bother me (long as it's good) but nearly every game being $30 does. Costs should vary since production value aren't the same for every game. Since this game doesn't look that interesting, I'll wait for some deal like Amazon's DOTD.

FYI, a patch for the flashcart block is already out. Nice try, but oh well. FYI, no I don't download games. I do play my purchased games from a flash cart, though. Ripped from my purchased (and owned/retained) originals. So, yes, the patch interests me, though I haven't bought the game yet. I'm going to wait for the price to come down. $40 is way too much for a DS game, especially one that has neither internet play nor download play. Speaking of which, I was hoping that with the success of a game like Mario Party DS (which has full download play and it works great), that we'd see other types of games using a similar method. FFCC:RoF would have been a perfect candidate.

Well most of the reviews mentioned that multiplayer was where the real game was... and to skip single player mode. I don't understand that, because I'm several hours in to single player and I find it to be quite addicting! I almost passed on this game based on the reviews mentioning that... and IMHO I think that they were wrong.

I still have to get through the Gamecube game, which is annoying the hell out of me. The little Moogle accompanying me is a jerk who won't pull his weight. And I suspect the game is far more difficult/irritating in single player than in multiplayer. If I don't out and out hate Crystal Chronicles after this, I might consider the DS game.

It might not be fair to compare the two. For me, they really don't seem that much alike, other than the world it takes place in.

I'm convinced enough to buy it (and I'll likely only be playing single player as I can't see paying double or triple the price to get multiplayer play with my kids), but it definitely has to drop in price, or I'll wait to pick it up used, via goozex or otherwise.

I got this game a few days ago, and it is fantastic. I haven't touched Story yet, since I've been having so much fun in Multiplay. It's a blast, even if you only have one other person to play with. The magic system changed from the last CC, as well. Now, you keep the magic orbs you find in dungeons, just like items. You start with a limit of about 10 of each basic spell (as in, you can hold up to 10 of the particular orb), but you can upgrade that as you go on. Each race has its own special ability too, but some of them are just downright better than the others (Clavats, for example, are the only race that can chain melee attacks).

Square's trend of charging 40 bucks for all ds games is ridiculous. I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt and attribute it to higher development costs or cartridges or something, but after seeing FFTA2 announced for 40 bucks I realize that just isn't the case.

I'll probably be playing this and The World Ends With You in 2009.

I have this game and am playing the story mode, and it is good. So far all the boss monsters are extremely easy, but I am enjoying the game a lot.

Sounds like single player stinks.

Anyone who's played FFCC, is RoF as repetitive?

My roommate picked this game up and while the bastard didn't show me the game he said it was good. So I decided to pick it up so we can play multiplayer together and I was interested in this game anyway.

I must say I think I am really going to enjoy this game a lot. I only put like an hour in it so far but the game kinda reminds me of Zelda mixed with a rpg but with caves instead of dungeons. I am kinda worried about the game length though because I did spend $40 on it but other than that I am enjoying what I am playing.

I plan on starting this up tonight while I'm killing time at my parents' house in the single-player mode. I never played the other CC game (never owned a Cube, now I have a Wii but no freaking time).

Even if it ends up being easy, based on what I've read here, I'm probably going to enjoy it. :)

The game length isn't something I'm a fan of (it's like, 10 hours if you take your time in multiplayer), but you unlock Hard and Very Hard mode, both of which have level requirements before you can enter, and which have better loots when you beat them, so that adds some replayability in my eyes.

This is the first I've heard of this. A big plus in my eyes.

Just picked up the game, and I have to say, I'm really enjoying it. Fighting is much faster than in the GCN game, and therefore it feels much more active and action-packed. I doubt I'll get much multiplayer in, but that's fine, single player has been pretty darn fun itself.

I never could get into the Gamecube game... but this one is not that repetitive. Sure, you do go through dungeons and kill enemies, upgrade your weapons, etc. They do keep introducing new elements throughout the game. As you gain new characters in your party then you get new abilities that you have to use to get through the dungeons. And the dungeons are nicely laid out... its not just about killing the monsters and making it to the end... there is light puzzle elements involved.

The other thing I have to say is that I really like the music in this game. Reminiscent of Final Fantasy, but at the same time it is its own thing.

I'm also getting near the end of the game and have to say that I still think the people who said the single player sucked in reviews were smoking something. I am really enjoying it a lot - it is quite addictive. The more you play it and get into the story it gets more involving. I am also over 11 hours in so its a bit longer than 6-8 hours. That depends on how you play, I guess. I am a little bit more into leveling up and exploring everything. Not just blazing through as fast as I can. I think by the time I finish it will be about 14-15 hours total playtime. Anyway, forty bucks it may be... but I think it is a great game.

picked this up - pretty fun single player so far - i like the dungeon designs ok and the hack n' slash is nice!

if they'd just concentrated on making this a single player game with good AI, I think it would've been awesome.

werid thing go to gamefaqs for a walkthough. At the 10 chapter thing. where you had to make all of those jumps to get the key in , i couldnt make the jumps and then all of a sudden i started getting dizzy and very sick to my gut. Turned off the system and started playing other games yesterday and nothing. Popped in this game and started missin the jumps and got sick all over again.

long story short, ended up sending it back to gamefly.

it was an okay game , i would never pay 40

I'm at stage 9 with 5:45 hours logged... and I am destroying enemies.

Is there really that much else out there?

also - the bosses are ridiculously easy - you just whack the living shit out of them.

And the AI really truly SUCKS.

This is kinda like a poor man's Phantom Hourglass.

I agree with the Gamespot review - coulda been great - it's still fun though.

i was about 9 hours at your spot, but i level grind alot i think my people were level 50 at this spot

Is this like the GC version in that you can play through the whole story mode in multiplayer? Reviews made it sound like the single player campaign and multiplayer are practically separate games, like the multiplayer is a bonus mode you can reuse your 1P character with.

haven't played in multiplayer - but just beat it and the bosses are ridiculously easy - you just hack the living shit out of them - no strategy whatsoever.

also, the ending is terrible. the story wasn't great to start with but the end is pathetic.

I have a question for those of you that have played this game. I just started it yesterday, and I can't figure out what to do with all the items I find in dungeons. I'm assuming they can be used in weapons upgrades, but I didn't notice the option to use them in the three shops that are next to each other in Reena Ta Ra (or however the town is spelled). Did I miss something?

you use them to make special items at the shop - not the armory guy, but the chick who hits on Yuri at the beginning of the game.

It's the best way to get weapons and stuff, but you need scrolls (think of them as recipes) and material (ingredients)

once you make an item with a scroll - it's gone.

I came back to the thread to post that I finally was able to figure out how to get weapons and armor from the shop which can use the items I gain in battle. I was curious about the scrolls and was wondering if, yeah, they disappear after you make an item. Thanks for clearing that up and helping, Sleepkyng.

The game isn't terribly challenging, although I did find fighting the boss fish challenging in Cela Ryu (or somesuch spelling) -- the cave/dungeon mostly surrounded in water.

The story is interesting, though, and that keeps me pressing on. But admittedly, I play few RPGs and my standards are likely lower than veterans. I'm about 7 hours in, and I was thinking of returning to earlier areas now that I have new abilities. I'm not one to level-grind or re-explore old areas typically, but I would hate to finish the game and never know what was in those other, unexplored areas.

Is it true what I've read in this thread -- that after you beat the game you unlock harder difficulty modes? This could make "backtracking" (or really, at that point, re-exploring) better later, in a harder difficulty mode.

Also, can anyone tell me about what I saw on the summit of Mt Vaal?
Before and after I engaged in battle with the flying boss, I saw something on a nearby platform, a sort of vial shape that I could see if I switched to Alhanalem and used his power via the R button. He could even pick it up, but couldn't seem to do more. Does anyone know what this is?

Edit: Figured it out. It's a Phoenix Down that you can only use if you're a spirit. Challenging to manage getting, but dead useful. I had to use two of them during the final boss battle. I was surprised there were twoto use.

Very slightly above average game. When compared to the GCN version, i think the GCN version is more in depth as far as equipment and quests(ish) and so on. But thank god theres no mother fucking bucket. Good lord was that thing ungodly evil. That aside this incarnation is faster paced as far as combat and i enjo the slight puzzel aspect of the game. Overall a good game not worth $40. Thats why I tossed my employee discount and a coupon at this at CCity. Revanant Wings is a better game IMO though. :/

I took a picture of the thing I described in my previous post, the mysterious object I saw on Mt Vaal. I also saw it when I
fought the boss at Sinners' Isle. Here is the picture:

FFCC.jpg

You can see the object to the right of Alhanalem. He can see it when using his special ability. I switched to Gnash, who had died, and in his spirit form, it seemed he could see it. When I Raised him, however, the item vanished from his view. They can all pick it up and throw it, even though when they pick up the item, nothing is shown on screen until you activate Alhanalem's power.

It's just weird and pointless, it seems. I tried teleporting back with it, but it didn't come with me. Does anyone have a clue what this is?

Edit: As mentioned in previous post, it's a Phoenix Down.

Finished the game today. Took me a little over 17 hours with me only backtracking to an area once to see what I could get to with my new party members and so forth. I really really really liked this game and have actually started to play it a second time. The difficulty is obviously raised significantly, as baddies are quite stronger. The items in the dungeons are not low-grade and some of the items are completely new to me. I can't tell yet if the first dungeon is really any different or if I just discovered a path I didn't explore last time.

Does anyone know if the game is at all different when replaying, besides increased difficulty, keeping your previously achieved items and levels, and gaining completely different items as you progress? If the game is essentially the same, with the exact storyline and dungeons, it may not merit replaying for me, when there's plenty other games in my backlog.

Edit:

According to a guide on GameFaqs, the main difference when you play the game the second time is after you finish Mt Vaal, a new dungeon becomes available with a secret boss. Considering Mt Vaal is early in the game, I might play that far. Gah, I really enjoyed this game and kind of hate to be done with it...
