Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions

man i dont know to go out tomorrow and get this or just play it on the DS system

hell i still have a FF tactices for the gba sealed

then again i get zelda for the DS tomorrow from gamefly. HOPEFULLY blockbuster would carry this game then i would be set

Don't get me wrong, I really like Final Fantasy Tactics, but doesn't anyone else feel this game has been a shoddy port? The game is stretched in order to fit the new aspect ratio rather than remade from scratch. Performance is horrid and the game often chugs at a low fps during spells/attacks. About the only real nice thing in this new port is the cut-scenes, but that only goes so far. This whole thing reeks of Square Enix ripping off fans (as usual) and not making FFT the true port it deserves. Instead they recycle old assets and stretch them out and throw them on a new platform.

And worst of all, using the POPs emulator and running the original FFT iso on the PSP runs much smoother than this port........... Now that's just pathetic

square has been releasing sloppy port for years, the SNES port on PSX, the GBA FF port, and now this. As long as people are willing to buy their stuff they wont have to change.

Wow, I didn't know that. That's pretty sad... I would think at the very least it would be easy to expand out the viewport so you'd have the map with the correct aspect in the center and just empty background to the sides. That and the slowdown sound pretty irritating, but I'm still interested in this for the new translation, and hopefully some VS battles.

Uh... there are some multiplayer modes, right? I honestly haven't been following this too closely. I just read "FFT remake for PSP" back around when it was announced and figured I'd pick it up no matter what.

Yowza. Now, if I can only figure out how to make PSX games playable on my PSP using a Mac, I'll do that instead. (Yes, yes, the Mac has Prometeus, which is handy-dandy, but it has a fuck-awful time reading genuine PSX discs for some dreadful reason).

Tons of PSOne port are just stretch, Tales of Eternia, Valkyrie Profile, etc.

After doing more research today, I'm pretty sure I'll be passing on this until it drops down to $20 or less.

I had a blast with the game back in... 1998 was it? But I still have my original PSX version and without it at least being a good port, I can't justify a $40 game.

I bet it'll still be fun but like others have said, this is just lazy and I'm not going to support Square-Enix if that's the case.

Indeed; with what few additions they made, I'd buy it for $10 as a PS3/PSP playable game on the PSN. For $40, though, they can go to hell. It's a $40 VC game as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, I decided about a month ago to forget about this version and just put the PSOne disc on my memory card. It runs just like on the PSOne and didn't cost me anything extra. If not for the slowdown, I might have bought it, but that's just not excusable when the system can emulate the original better than run a professionally ported version.

Link to coupon please? or the ability to replicate it? Time is of the essence...

The idea of slowdown sounds pretty absurd when you consider that the PSP can run games like Crisis Core and Tekken Dark Ressurection. This game is about 10 years old right?

I was going to grab this game when it came out. But based what I have seen/heard about the slow down, I'll wait for it to go down in price. Another reason is that Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness is out later this month. Which I'm hearing is a good port of the PS2 game.

Not really when you looked at the other FF ports on PSX and GBA. The sad thing is that it really hasnt stop people from buying them

Should be in all GameCrazy stores now, three local stores have already gotten it in. Thought it came out tomorrow.

I can't speak on the PSX ports, but I can say I never noticed any slowdowns in the GBA ports. Atleast nothing like what I saw in some of the gameplay videos of FFT.

Anyone know if the new PSP-2000 improves the slowdown?

Otherwise, I'm loving this game. It was never released in Europe first time around and I'm not a guy for emulators.

FF4 ran pretty well for the most part. The only noticeable slowdown for me was during the ending when it shows the moon orbiting. Pretty glaring, as it caused the entire rest of the ending to be out of sync with the music, which ended up getting cut off. I'm wondering if it's worse in FF5/6, which are more mode 7 scaling intensive.

That is like... wrong on so many levels. Crisis Core (an action RPG for the PSP from Squenix centering around FFVII's Zack) was only released in Japan mid-September '07 so why it's showing up as having an NA release of June 27 '07 and even more bizzare, *in stock*, is beyond me. o___O

I dont know what FF4 you played but there were problems with the battles. I dont think it ruined the gameplay was it was very noticeable. Supposely a lot of problems were fixed in the Europe version. FF6 GBA was pretty bad on an actual GBA, but it ran better on an emulator.

they are somewhat different games, the psx/psp and gba.

I hate playing RPG's on such a small screen...

Anyways, the slowdown is definitely there. First couple battles it bothered me, but I've grown used to it.

The new translation is pretty cool, but I need to take a break because my damn neck hurts.

Will cost me 800 dollars after tax if I ever want to see this game on a big screen. Damnit.

Was it there for the intro movie and when the Dark Knight dude uses his sword skill? I was annoyed in the JP version with that. The game basically froze for a second when he started the sword skill (I forgot the name of it, night something???)

I honestly might pass on it right now and just pick up Disgaea for the time being. I already have Crisis Core to play, and there are a bunch of PSP games I have yet to start up on. Not to mention I got Phoenix Wright runnin' on my DS right now. Maybe if I can get that $5 coupon or some type of price cut on it, then I'll change my mind.

It sucks, but FF Tactics is my favorite game of all time bar none. I will trudge through the shitty slowdown to see the new translation and characters.

Not to mention, I haven't replayed this game in awhile. Seems fresh.

The slowdown is definitely there, but it doesn't seem bad at all to me. This is coming from someone who put in 200+ hours in the original PSX release. I have to say I am loving the new translation and I cannot wait until I reach the new fights and other new additions in the game. In between screens when the LCD would go blank all I could see was my face with a huge smile reflecting back at me. I love this game!

I also noticed that the critics seemed pleased, but that's only because FFT was such a great game and they're just happy to play it again with proper translations.

At a lower price i'd say the game is worth a buy, but at full price, it's a major ripoff (unless you've never played FFT before). And even then the fact that it runs worse than the original FFT, even on the PSP... wow...

Oh yeah, all the sprites are supar fat :D
so is it on the store now ? my local BB still dont have it, tomorrow they said.
All major chains are releasing it tomorrow. What time they actually decide to open their boxes remains to be seen. BB promises 2pm in their ad. I'm goin' on my lunch break.

Though I wish someone would post a link or a copy to another $5 off game coupon for them..... (HINT HINT)
they are somewhat different games, the psx/psp and gba.
welll gamefly shipped it today so hopefully have it by Saturday. Im getting back into Puzzle quest (even though i already beat it on the psp implaying it on the ds)

dragons aria is another game i need to play (got it dirt cheap at pawn for 10)
Is the slowdown just on the old psp or the new one too? Maybe it runs better on the new slim?
I'm playing it on a slim and the slowdown is pretty bad.

I love Tactics just as much as everybody else but I just can't imagine how they felt like this was good enough to ship where it slows down EVERY TIME any spell is cast. The new cutscenes look fantastic but are marred by crappy voice acting. I haven't checked the options yet but hopefully I can turn off voices like in Luminous Arc.

I'm a bit disappointed by this update to my favorite PSX game.

Meijer didn't have it. They had a massive stack of Half-Life Orange copies in the back the girl said. I'm glad Meijer has ramped up their previously embarassing games department. They even have 29 Wiis on the shelf and probably 5 Halo edition 360s.

So disappointing about the slowdown. This game's cover art calls to me like a siren every time I see it.

I'll break at $20.

My quick impression so far. Personally I dont think the slowdown are game breaking. They are noticeable but I dont think it is that bad. The new cut screen looks nice, but they removed the original footage to put in the new cut screen. This is the same problem I had with Valkyrie Profile. As for the retranslation, I personally dont think the original was that bad if they could get someone to proofread, but I like the new one so far. Like the GBA FF, they had to changed the memorable quotes from the original. So far it is not too bad, just wish square would not charged full price for it.

Frys.com. $20. Came to $26 for me, no tax with shipping included.

EDIT: I doublechecked and the sale seems to have ended. Must have to so many orders they decided to kill it before taking too big a loss.

yeah I tried to get in on the sale, but I don't feel too bad that the price changed.

Just got this yesterday and the slow down is really noticeable. I can't believe this got overlooked. The new cut scenes are nice, voice acting is shoddy and the graphics look the same. There's no in game quick save during battles but you can always put your PSP in stand by mode if you need to stop playing during a battle. The slow down is enough for me to not play through this version. I have the orginal FFT on my PSP and it plays just as good as the updated version.

You think the slowdown is that bad? You should see Spectral Souls (it says LOADING before EVERY attack...).
