So, I never had a Playstation and missed out on a couple of FF games. However, I do have a PS2 now and can get FFVII new for $8. Am I missing out if I don't play it? I heard it is good but graphically (not trying to piss off FF fans) it has become outdated. It is still worth picking up? Also, is the fighting turn-based?

Yes turn-based, yes worth playing. It's not the best game ever, but it's very good, and the graphics don't take away from the experience.

It's only, like, 8 years old. It's not that old at all... I can't believe people are complaining about the visuals. I just don't believe it. It looks great, don't worry.

Anyway, yeah, pick it up. And it is turned based.
what other games have you played?
For ps1? Nothing but MGS, Gran Turismo games, and Soul Blade. I know I'm missing out on some great classic rpg games but having a ps2, xbox, gamecube, psp, and nice gaming pc, I get easily distracted by newer games.

Or did you mean FF games?

i thinks its alright but its over hyped.

the only ps1 games i still play are all the twisted metals, except 2 becasue i dont have it, and some fighting games. but rpg wise i'd go with chrono cross.
personally i would rank ff7 near the bottom of the good rpg list for the ps1, but thats just my opinion.
l...lol? Wait, no one laughed? Alright fine.

I thought it was funny.

It's a solid title, better than most rpgs. You should go out and get Symphony of the Night. Close to perfection you can get on the ps1.

It would have been funny if it had been DDF saying it. ;)

I more or less was going to pick it up because it was clearanced for $8. If they had any other rpg games for that much, I'd pick them up too but they don't. I just was wondering if it is worth it since I never played it. Guess I'll pick it up. Thanks folks!

to tell you the truth the only thing me and ddf ever agreed on was ff7 and zelda:Oot. but other than that please don't compare me to him. I also recommend xenogears, the chrono trigger/ final fantasy 4 set.

... anyways, 8 bucks aint bad i grabbed mine for 9.99 i think i mine was used. I would grab it for 8, but personally i beat it and thought it was lacking. i think it is because i expected something greater. I expected it to be like the best rpg ever and i was so disappointed.

If it's black label for $8 you'd better pick it up.

Seriously, since I know it's not, still pick it up. You're not losing much if you don't like it. I still have the battle track running through my head from time to time. I think it's truly a great game for $8.

people who judge this game fall into the following categories

1) they've played and loved it
2) see #1, but they won't admit they loved it because everyone else loves it
3) they hate it, because they don't like rpgs
I heard it is good but graphically (not trying to piss off FF fans) it has become outdated.
The only thing seriously wrong about the graphics (even when it was first released) is that the up close models of the characters look terrible.

And

4) they enjoyed it greatly, but hate fools that spew endlessly about how it was the end-all-be-all of rpgs when it was not.

There are also those whose opinions have been poisoned by the fanboys and have turned to the "dark side" and end up hating the game.

I would say if you haven't played it, $8 is a good deal to pick it up. I think it's overdone as one of the greatest games ever, but whatever. It's a pretty good game. I prefer VIII, but I seem to be in a minority.

My judgement: buy the game. It's only 8 bucks and it's a lengthy game that'll keep you entertained for a good while. If you don't like it ... it's only eight bucks.

For onlu 8 bones you at least have to TRY it, if for no other reason than the amazing soundtrack. The music is simply incredible, IMHO.

Those are good points IMO.
Yeah the graphics are a little outdated but it's still a great game.
They only look worse (unlike the FF8 port) on the PC, so make sure to grab the PSX version. FF8 on the PC was pretty damned good looking, though, if you can find it.

Yeah, the in-game character graphics suck in FF7, but the CG is phenomenal.
I think VII is easier on th eyes then VIII.
Agreed. Big polygonal shapes are better than small characters consisting of 5000 differently colored, jagged pixels.

Personally, I would go for FF8 or FF9 ahead of FF7. Should you get and play FF7? Probaby. Is it perhaps the most overrated game of all time? Probably.

Yeah I'd start with 8 or 9 before you play 7. 7 is great but is extremely overrated. For me, FFVIII was the most enjoyable experience out of all of the final fantasies.

I think you should play a newer RPG. It's a great game, but i'm positive that it WILL be remade in the future so it's not like you are really missing out. Also, the energy of the game seems to die down during the second disc and you'll find yourself building up materia or chocobo stats for hours on end. Without the "graphic motivation", you'll probably quit half way through the game.

It's one of the better RPGs I much prefer Final Fantasy X though. As far as visuals, the backgrounds still look great and the character models never looked good (they don't even have any fucking mouths).

FFX is my personal favorite too. I liked the new battle system a lot more than the Active time battle.

FF7 story was pretty good with solid characters. All of them were so distinct. FFIX was visually impressive and had that whimsical rpg/fantasy vibe going for it, but the story really dragged. They kept pounding away on the "what is the meaning of life/creation" theme and half way through it I just couldn't stand Vivi and the black magicians.
I know FFX tackled race and religion but at least it wasn't as in your face. It was much more subtle and now that I think about it, FFX really felt more like an adult's rpg.

Am I just romanticizing my experience with FFX?

I think you'll definitely enjoy it. Great game, especially for 8 bucks. I'd love to see a graphically updated remake someday.

Actually, what I'd love to see is an FF on the PS3 that combines the Materia system from VII, the epic story of VIII, the charm and quirky characters of IX, and the battle system from X. Or, just a remake of FF6 will do. That was my favorite one anyway.

can't go wrong with a 30 hour RPG for 8 bucks.. definately worth it gameplay wise.. the graphics are outdated always were.. but it had a really cool "this is like fantasy but its taking place RIGHT NOW.. kind of thing going for it" The characters were enjoyable.. the "date" was one of the better moments in the game IMO.. the reason why this game gets so much flack is because it was just one of the first (i said ONE OF THE not THE) RPGS to crack into American audiences. it really open the flood gates..

and about VIII I got a Pocketstation just to play the minigame and get the item you could only get through that.. (yeah i know dork.. but hey my pocketstation rules) ..

anyways.. IX wasn't really all that cool.. it was like the "whimsical" one.. and it just beat to death the "why are we here..." crap and yeah.. didn't like it too much.. i think i got past the 2nd disc and just stopped playing then went back to finish it..

Chrono Cross just has too many characters and not enough you care about.

Name a better RPG. I fucking dare ya.

FFVll's not only one of the top RPGs, on PSOne, it's one of the top RPGs, period. Sure it has it's fair share of problems, much like any other RPG (or game, for that matter), but it's still pure greatness, plain and simple.

I am surprised by all the bashing of Final Fantasy VII. It is a great game. It seems to me, and I may have it wrong, that the people that say they dont like it bought too much into the hype and since it might not be the greatest RPG ever made they think it is bad.

That is not true. It is fun. It will give you many hours or gameplay. Definably go get the game. It is so worth $8.

This is just asking to start up a flamefest, since everyone will have a different opinion. Someone will say "I loved Suikoden 2, best RPG ever" and you'll say "Nah, Suikoden 2 sucked compared to FF 7" and it'll just go back and forth, so it all ends up being subjective and in the eye of the beholder.

I could name 5 - 10 better RPG's than FF 7, but you may not like any of them, so there is no point.

I didn't even realize that FFVII was a hyped game when i got it 8 years ago when it released and i thought it kicked ass. I had only played FF I at the time, and didn't keep up with any game news since the internet was crappy as hell back then
