Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings out now ~~ CAG says: too expensive!

Please tell me someone was able to beat 9-4 and can give some tips. I have gotten manhandled so many times I'm near giving up.

I already set my DS price point at 19.99 (unless its Pokemon or some uber release) so no games until they hit 19.99 or below for me, burned too many times and games drop in price too fast, and too much of a games backlog to care about getting things right away!

Gamestop had FFIII for 19.99 on their website for a very long time.. so its bound to go down eventually.

This is really fun on my train ride to work. There is way less micromanagement then the FF XII for ps2. I wish that I was better at strategy games in general. I look away and some of characters get wiped out seen I was paying attention. Bump this up to Rondo of Swords.

Would you really wait until the world ends with you to drop to $20?

I'll wait on it to drop some square is only charging an extra 10 because their square. Its stupid especially since a lot of their titles are stuff thats been released before.

Dang, I was thinking I'd pick this up during this B2G1F sale, but now after reading some reviews and this thread, I think I should just skip it. So far I've hated "big" DS games that require stylus control (ie not mini-game based), and the idea of trying to control individual characters like that in real time, with a stylus on a tiny screen sounds dreadful, even though I'd like to see the animation and continuation of the story and all that.

*Sigh* Well, I'll figure out some other stuff to pick up. Maybe Crystal Chronicles and Mystery Dungeon or...something...

I wouldn't let the stylus control scare you off, honestly. You can use group icons and the like to pick out people to move, thereby avoiding the chaos on the map.

Finally found a copy of this on clearance at Target about a month ago for $19.99. Started it last week. Enjoying it quite a bit so far (just starting chapter 4), but I have to say it's pretty light on the strategy at this point, at least inside the actual missions themselves. Most of the strategy is in the menus outside of battle: Make sure you have the most powerful espers you can get, balanced by elements. Make sure you keep equipping the most powerful weapons and items. Make sure you've got the most advantageous gambits selected. But once you're on the play field, it's just "select all, attack that guy. Okay, now attack that guy..." I've yet to get into a situation where I had to focus on individual units much at all, or worry about elemental or unit type weaknesses much. But I'm sure that will come into play more later on.

I was dismayed to see a stealth mission (when Vaan has to sneak into the temple) in a game like this. I'm hoping it's the only one. The game is REALLY not designed for it, as whenever you're within proximity of an enemy, your character will automatically try to attack, even when you specifically want them to stay hidden or keep running away. That mission was kicking my ass until I gave up trying to actually sneak around, as it tells you to, and instead just ran as fast as I could (still managing to get all the treasures).

Dang, I wish my Target had deals :(

I'm still not sure about this. I was going to skip it, but I ended up with a weird mismatched number of games. I ended up picking up:

-Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2
-DK King of Swing 2 (I liked the original, although this one doesn't sound as good)
-Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles 2-not sure if this is any good, though I did sort of like the original and this is supposed to be better single player
-Professor Layton

And then Harvest Moon Cute, and FF12 Revenant Wings so I'd have two free games. Not really sure about either of them, though I've never played a Harvest Moon game and I'd rather play a portable version than a TV version...
...except after this I ALSO found that futuristic Harvest Moon game for the Playstation Portable for $10, so now I've got TWO Harvest Moon games.

I'm just not sure what else to get instead of FF12. Doesn't seem like there's anything else left, at least in the $30-40 price range. I even thought about picking up Mario Party or Animal Crossing for my mom (she's expressed some interest in the latter), but I'm not sure when/if she'd actually try them.

I'm at around 81% now (doing all of the side missions). I'm stuck on two of the side missions: "Escape Escapade," the one where you have to beat the three other sky pirates who you're friends with, and "Dance of the Dead," the one where you have to fight the endless waves of undead and Zalera in the Paramina Rifts.

Get my ass kicked early on the three pirates one, and with no summoning platforms, I don't last long. I've made it to a point in the Dead one where I have a sizeable army and the second platform captured and all of my espers leveled up about as much as they can go (using the rank II healing espers and Ultima as my rank III), but then Zalera just wipes me out with little difficulty. Any tips?

I think I'm at the same place as you, Tybee, those three skypirates keep whipping my arse. Usually, I could take one of them down then I get owned. I stop playing after this.

The FAQ I read says to make sure Kytes has learned Flare and Penelo has learned Holy and that your characters are at or around level 50. Most of my folks are in the mid to high 40s, I believe. I know I've gotten Kytes to learn flare. Not sure if Penelo is good to go. May have to grind on some monster killing missions.

Same FAQ also recommends using Tiamat as your rank III esper in "Dance of the Dead," as it has both a wide ranging lightning attack and a spell that boosts the party's resistance to magick attacks. So I'll try that too.

I never had any problems with this game. Most of missions are really easy except the bonus dungeon or last boss if you completed all the missions. Those two characters with revive spell are really broken since their cool down is way too short. I can revive my character faster then they could go down. If a place is really crowded with enemy troops, I use cheap bait techniques. Use a long area of attack spells and lure them to your army. After defeating them, quickly strike their base before they can recover. If they don't take the bait, I just keep casting aoe spells until there dead.

I didn't have too much trouble with that one; I think I used Kytes, Vaan, and Llyud (for revival purposes). The trick is to take them on one at a time and use the healing berries often.

Dance of the Dead was BRUTAL, though. It was a long slow challenging war of attrition, and I barely won.

I agree that most of the 80 or so missions I've completed so far have been pieces of cake. Even if I had to try a couple of them more than a few times, it at least became clear pretty quickly what I needed to do to succeed.

These two missions are different, however. They seem to require actual strategy. ;)

Beat Dance of the Dead finally. Tiamat did seem to help. Other than that, just followed my existing strategy of basically grinding within the level fighting wave after wave of zombies and vampires so as to max out the fortification of my espers and ensure I could summon as many as possible. Here's who I used:

Leaders: Vaan, Penelo, Kytes, Ashe, Basche (avoided flying characters because they had a tendency to wander off and cause problems and were not as tough).

Espers: Tiamat (assign to whoever you want, but he's ranged to Kytes is a good choice), Tonberry (three each for Vaan and Basche), Carbuncle (assigned four of them to Penelo for lots of healing), Salamander (for Ashe and Kytes)

Immediately use the summoning pad you start with to summon Tiamat and whatever else you can. Once your army is augmented, make your way slowly up to the other summoning pad and claim it. Then just hang out here and fight wave after wave of oncoming baddies, fortifying your espers as it becomes available and adding a couple more to your army when you build up your affinity points. You'll also be accumulating mist so that each of your characters will have his or her Quickening ability available by the time you finally advance on the boss. Try to max out the fortifications as much as you can. You should be at a point where your army can fend off the oncoming waves almost without direction from you. Finally, immediately after dispatching the respawning band of four vampires that come in from the top right, move on the leader. I immediately used Vaan's Quickening ability, as well as Kytes and maybe Basche's...Don't remember. That plus a couple hits did the trick.

It also helps to set Vaan's Gambit ability to the one that causes Stop, just to buy yourself a few extra seconds.
