Finally Mastering PSP Video

For a while, I was struggling with getting videos to transfer to my PSP, even after getting all the programs, file extensions, etc. Turns out either the USB port or cable I was using was crap.

I just put both Kill Bill 1 & 2 onto one 512 Meg Memory Stick Duo Pro! I am kind of pissed that there's only actually 480 meg on the stick when all's said and done. That meant I had to re-do the second movie and put most of it in mono (the software I'm using breaks each DVD into three "pieces").

Congrats! I think im just going to do the lazy thing and wait for websites that have already converted the movies/shows into PSP format and download them. But thats awesome for you, I wish I had the time/skill to be able to do it myself, If I could I would transfer my Transformers, Simpsons, Family, & Futurama episdoes into my PSP.

Thanks. I'm doing the Ali G show now. I'm fortunate that I work from home, so I can just have the ripper/converter software going on in the background while I do other things. Of course, those programs suck major memory from my computer, but I'm rarely running anything else too taxing.
Hows the quality?
I'm running on the lowest setting that PSP Video 9 offers (15 frames per second, 216 kbps at 320x240), but I think it looks/sounds great. I'd rather have a slight bit of graininess and be able to put more on the stick than going all-out quality and only being able to fit one movie at most.

I am running the same setting with the same software. I am currently converting all my anime to that format so I have it on the go. An average film (2 hrs.) takes me 20 mins to rip from DVD to a vob file. Then another hour to compress the same file in to a file suitable for the PSP. With anime, you can get away with higher compression as it seems to be less grainy than actual life action stuff.

Also, I use DVD Shrink 3.2 to rip the DVD to a vob file. And it does give you an option to rip the entire film to one vob file so you don't have any movies in different chunks. I then use PSP Video 9 and convert. Easy 2 step process.

I guess I'll look for an updated DVD Shrink, then. By the way, I compress mine about 50% while ripping. Not sure what the difference is when PSP Video 9 gets its hands on the files, but at the very least it seems to take less time. You may want to give that a try, as it doesn't take me anywhere NEAR that long in PSP Video 9. In fact, that takes much less time than ripping the files from the DVD.

Maybe it is my stuff running in the background? Or the fact that I don't compress at all when I rip. And, to think of it, I'm not 100% sure exactly how long it takes. I assumed it was an hour as I usually set it to convert and then go to do something else. Maybe it is far less time and I never realized it. My monitor goes in to power saving mode and I watch the HD light on my case assuming it was still converting. I'll laugh my ass off if it only took a fraction of the time and I never noticed it. I'll do another film tomorrow and time it.

Trying to PSP Video one thing while DVD Shrinking another causes them both to run like a one-legged ostrich on my machine.

Do you customize your own .THM files? I really like doing that for some reason.

I have yet to make custom thumbnails. I will though since the original ones that it defaults to (first frame I think) always suck and it bugs the hell out of me. For most of the anime I have, I will probably just modify some anime avatars. Should be a good fit.
Call me crazy... but if you work from home... why dont you just watch this stuff on the tv?
Who works from home?

Well, I did just Elektra in high quality (29.97 fps) with stereo sound. It came out to 615MB and took about 50 minutes to convert. The runtime on the movie is 1:45.

Okay, crazy. It's a portable console, so naturally I'm going to be using it a lot while I'm away from home (I travel quite a bit). I was happy to have episodes of Tenacious D handy while I was on a plane last week, for example. It sure beats dragging out the laptop to watch something.

However, most of my "leisure" time was spent finishing up the newest Discworld book, Going Postal. Mmmmmm...Discworld... ::drool::

It's pretty easy to do. I just watch the MP4 on my PC, pause and hit "Print Screen" button on a frame I like, then I paste it into Photoshop or Paint Shop.
Crop it down to 160 x 120, save it as a .jpg.
Then, change the file name in Windows Explorer to .THM, and it's done!

does anyone know a good process for converting dvd clips to psp compatible videos using a mac? I keek fumbling around and can't find find a reliable solution.

Yeah, that's what I want to do, put the "D" music videos on the PSP. Hail satan!

Yeah thanks for tha article foo. I have been using ffmpeg and yade x with great success. As far as the all in one progs that were in the article, I tried ipsp. I found the interface to be somewhat awkward. pspware has got my attention right now, seems pretty solid, and it's cheaper.

This sounds very easy to do. I have created a MP_ROOT\100MNV01 folder on my memory stick and name the video as such M4VXXXX.mp4 and the thumbnail to follow as M4VXXXX.THM is there any way to get this to work and have the files named for example

Star Wars Clone Wars Part 6.MP4 and Star Wars Clone Wars Part 6.THM

I was just curious I followed the steps I read and got everthing to work fine but I do not want to mess with anything if it is not going to work anyone know if you can change the file names? or do you have to follow the format?

I am going to play with customising my thumbnails when I get home from work.

I use 3gp and it automatically renames the mp4 file. I rip the file from the dvd and it gives me a vob file. I rename the vob file into what I want to come up on the psp, es Simpsons Super Bowl. Then I drop the file into 3gp and it finishes converting the file to mp4 it renames it to an mp4 file name once the conversion is finished.

Once I put the mp4 file on the psp the original name I used will come up on the psp. Only tricky part I have is remembering which file is which when I transfer between the psp and computer.

From all I've seen, the file name for the MP4 has to be that crazy long number. It may change in the future, hopefully.
