ibuypower isnt a very good place to get a computer. they are known for having defective PCs coming out of the box and the technical service is terrible.

plus the cases they offer are ugly as fuck

well my experience with ibuypower has been excellent. I bought a mid-range unit ($1200 including ctr monitor) about 3 years ago. I have yet to have a problem with it. I only suggest you upgrade the speakers, the default ones are pieces of shit. If you are concerned about reliability try abspc.com. from what i have seen they give you a pimp users manual and if tech support tries to screw you go to www.resellersratings.com and bitch and usually it'll get fixed.

Maybe I just got lucky but I bought 2 computers from ibuypower.com, both for friends, and they've had no problems at all. I haven't found any other vendor that can match their prices. Plus, they have a whole lot of awards from various PC magazines. Of course, since my friends had no problems, we've never had to use their tech support, so I can't confirm/deny whether or not their tech support is any good.

As for case designs, they're all a bit "out there" and if that's not your thing...I can see calling them ugly. That's a personal preference I guess. I think there are a few models that can be configured with a "normal" looking case.

I'm not saying they haven't sold any lemons (what vendor hasn't), I'm just saying I've had nothing but positive personal experiences with ibuypower.com and as far as I can tell, they use all good brand-name parts.

I have a friend that got a PC for his father from ibuypower. He had to tweak the video drivers and they did not ship the sound card he ordered but other than that it was ok. He called their customer support and they credited him for the sound card and he bought one local.

He later bought 2 more, one for him and one for his gamer wife. He had a problem with the power supply on one but they replaced that and it has been working great ever since.

If you are looking for another place you can configure your own pcusa.com is another site that allows this. I do not know anyone that has gotten one from them yet though so I do not know what quality the PCs from there are at.

Check out Dell's refurbished outlet.

They've had 3ghz P4 hyperthreading, 1 gig of ram, etc going on there for as little as $400. Only problem is some don't have an AGP slot, but they have PCI-E.

maybe you could try http://www.buyabs.com/

abs seems to have gotten good ratings. they're customizable, just like dell, so u'd be good to go. it looks like they moved some of their more budget minded systems to the abs outlet webpage. click on that. i'd buy the amd processors for cheapness and speed. ;)

I agree with EnderBui, buy all of the parts and put the thing together yourself. You get exactly what you want, it's cheaper, and you get to learn a skill that will be useful. I fix people's computers on the side and at $100 a visit (with two hours being the average visit length, that's $50 an hour) it turns out to be a great way to earn pocket cash for games. I'm currently being considered for a job that only requires me to put together servers and set up networks for clients, the job pays $55,000 and I live near Rockford IL. All I did was set aside a single weekend two years ago to build a gaming PC and now I have at least $300 a month in extra income and the possibility for a better paying job that is total gravy.
And after you put your own system together you won't need customer support because you'll be able to figure it out yourself.
Make one yourself. It's fun and a learning experience.
i agree, you can get one over at frys really cheap, its fun to do and easy just read the instructions, i just built one for a buddy of mine and for under 700 we built him a real nice one, i cant remember all the specs because i havent seen it in awhile and dont have it in front of me, BUT the point is itll be cheap and it is indeed fun!
