You can't shoot money, silly DMK. The coins are too large for the barrel.
You can't shoot money, silly DMK.
Although certain car insurance commercials certainly make you want to...
Maybe your barrel
I believe you're saying that your urethra is at least about a half an inch in diameter. There's no way that's a good thing.
As it is the story is still a sad one because there are many things in a house which can't be replaced by insurance, certainly the animals that perished
Whoa, the firefighters let the animals die by fire inside the house? That's it, fuck these firefighters. These firefighters are motherfuckers.
Maybe your barrel
Precisely, because of my coins, hefty silver twenty pieces o' eighty they be. Mario aint got shit on my 1 ups.

Alternatively, this man let his animals burn alive because he was too cheap to pay $75.

I know we always go off topic in here, but this has got to be the worst derailing since Amtrack.
Alternatively, this man let his animals burn alive because he was too cheap to pay $75.
Eh, $75 isn't the same as a fire hose and gallons of water.

Is it because of your skinny pipe in your thingy?
It's perfectly on topic, if everyone had a urethra the size of DMK's we wouldn't need firefighters.
No, but we'd need toilets the size of bathtubs.

And really good aim.
Alternatively, this man let his animals burn alive because he was too cheap to pay $75.
No, he was begging them and offering to pay the the $75 at the scene, and then some. The problem is the fucktard fire department wants to act like an insurance company and/or mob protection racket. When firefighters go to some apartment fire in the projects, they don't line everybody up outside and say "Do you pay taxes? If no, what is your apartment number so we can skip it."

Perhaps this man should have moved to the projects then.
He was 100% aware of what kind of coverage he had available to him in so far as fire protection services.

He knew the risks - pay $75 or risk your pets (and everything else) burning up in your home.
I hope he spent that $75 on something real nice.

She wouldn't have worn that miniskirt if she wasn't asking for it.

"If I don't pay my taxes that does not mean I am asking for a debilitated government."

Is that what you are saying? Seems to me if you don't consider it necessary to pay for the services you ask the government to provide then you have no right to complain they did not provide them.

This does not mean the government should not have provided this essential service however, they should have provided the service at the regular cost of manpower, equipment, etc.

dressing like a slut at a frat party or spring break in Cancun sure will improve your chances.

We all know your political viewpoint.

But the guy lost his house and his pets died in the fire. Why are you being so nasty and vitriolic about it?

If the debate is simply over a piddly amount of cash that the guy was willing to pay, then why would you refuse at the crisis point?

There's no reason for that behavior. Put out the fire and charge him afterward, like has been done with other people, and stop with this bullshit "he di-int wanna so aint gonna" smarminess.

Even if he knew and made the choice not to
Even if he talked shit about it
Even if he's railed against it in public
Even if a thousand other reasons

if he's willing AT THAT POINT and can produce the cash, WHAT do you gain by refusing him, aside from looking like a gigantic dick?

Oh, right. Some bullshit principle that A) empowers the gubment and B) punishes someone monetarily. Grand stance there. I guess some of you begging for lower taxes don't give a shit if you just label it as a "fee."

We could build The Pyramids: Part 2! with that amount of bullshit.

Might we use Knoell and UncleBob as the slave labor that has to turn the shit into blocks then build the pyramid?

Both of them seem great at attempting to disguise and reshape bullshit.

He didn't pay the fee, so the firefighters didn't put the fire out.. I don't see what the big issue is.. If you crash your car without paying insurance, then you are not going to get your car fixed courtesy of the insurance company.

As far as I am concerned the firefighters are morally right to let the fire burn. If there was a life in danger then of course there would be an issue.. but there wasn't. This guy thought too much of himself to pay for the service, so screw him.

Because that's his stance in this particular thread and he's sticking with it.

If you let one slide, then you have to let them all slide, and before you know it, nobody is paying their $75. Rules are rules, no exceptions.

You would've enjoyed living under legalism with the Emperor Qin, until he cut off your hand for delivering 101 or 99 arrows instead of the 100 he requested.

At the point the man goes on national television to demonize the Fire Department and the City's administration, his own life becomes fair game for criticism.

Call it the "Sarah Palin" effect.
Look out - Myopic Guru in da haus, with no solution as usual.
Umm... the solution is simple. Pay the $75 on time or don't receive service. Duh.

I do have a question though - what do y'all think about the areas where such a $75 service is simply not offered? There are several areas around the country that are simply not covered by any kind of fire protection services - at any cost. Do you feel that this situation would be made better if the local towns simply did not offer the $75 service?

History is so badass.

How did he demonize the fire dept? He sat in his wheelchair and calmly explained what happened, including how he forgot to pay the fee and how his pets died.

And what's the Sarah Palin effect?
Because that's his stance in this particular thread and he's sticking with it.
I don't think you understood my point. I know UB's politics, but UB finds great glee in putting down a guy in a wheelchair that just lost his house and his two dogs.

UB seems to be getting off on this and I find it a little... unusual. I'd be in opinions if there's a psychologist in the house.
Pay the $75 on time or don't receive service.
I yearn to live in your world where, apparently, disasters are scheduled well in advance.

Friday: Giant frogs will fall from sky. Remember to roll up windows on car.

A.) I don't think that's a wheelchair. Looks like a lawn chair to me. Could be wrong.
B.) Directly:
"Back when we had a real fire chief. He had enough gall about him that he would do things."
C.) When anyone questioned the various sniping that went on toward Palin's personal life or her family, they were told that, because Palin put herself into the spotlight, she (and, I suppose, by extension, her family) became fair game. While I'm not about to start looking into the sexual activities of this man's children, I have no problem viewing and commenting on his actions directly related to the story at hand.

I fear living in your world where no one has any kind of personal responsibility.
Again, this man knew what his responsibility was. He failed to live up to it. It sucks, but that's how life works some times. And it's not anyone else's fault that he didn't pay for the service.

Oh, who am I kidding, it's probably Bush's fault. IHari was right back in post #3.
I fear living in your world where no one has any kind of personal responsibility.
I fear living in your world where no one has any responsibility to anyone else beyond their financial obligations. Compassion, mercy? Worthless words. He should've paid the fee!

The punishment doesn't fit the rule. You don't lose 10000% (assuming $75K) to get taught a lesson. Chainsaw as a flyswatter, mountain out of molehills.

Further, if you clods were actually up on consistency, you'd denounce this as a tax in disguise. Beyond that, you'd encourage a system where people who require calls from the fire department are the only ones taxed, because they are the only ones using the service. Right now you've got a bunch of people paying into a system that only a fraction of them will ever make use of, and instead of calling that a gamble, you're much happier and shadenfreude-addled to laugh at a dood who is CLEARLY down on his luck and just got publicly humiliated WHILE losing most of his possessions and his pets. Whole thing reeks of "TAUGHT THAT fuckER A LESSON, A HYUCK! HOO BOY GLAD TER WEREN'T ME!"

It's like none of you guys ever had a late fee to pay to Blockbuster, who graciously gave you the option to pay a smaller amount rather than looking up records at midnight and pasting your asses for $29.99 because you just HAD to see Bio-dome again.

You still cannot explain - at all - why you would ignore a guy with cash in hand, agreeing to terms on the spot. Rules can be bent without breaking, unless the people enforcing them are cheeseheaded dickdogs.

No one punished this man.

Unless you know something that hasn't made it into the press - like, say, the apparent fake Fire Chief was the one who set the house on fire just to teach those county folks a lesson. Then we'd be dealing with a whole different story.

Here's why I'm okay with him being turned down on the spot. Let's say you buy a game at GameStop. You turn down the disc protection plan. You bring the game home, set it on the counter, and next thing you know, your (younger sibling, child, dog) has it and has put some pretty darn good scratches in it. Should you be out the $60 cost of the game because you didn't pay the $2 fee? Should you be allowed to go into GameStop and add the protection plan after the disc has been damaged?
The clincher for me is that .they watched if burn. Seriously wtf.
That's where the story is getting over-sensationalized. They didn't "watch it burn" per-say. They were called out for the neighbor (who had paid the $75). They put out the part of the fire that had crossed onto his property, stuck around long enough to make sure the fire wasn't going to be a danger to the guy's property who paid for their service, then left while the other guy's house was still burning.

I've not heard/read anything of them pointing, laughing, making a scene or anything that implies to me they enjoyed not helping this man.

Wow. He said the previous chief had more gall. That makes him "fair game"

You do realize this is a cult mindset right?

"I got mine so fuck the other guy" needs to be the Republican national platform motto. I can't think of a single issue it doesn't relate to at this point.

As opposed to "You didn't get your's, let's **** the other guy and take it from him!"?
