Ok... so I did a search and didn't really see anything that helped me... but I can't believe it hasn't been asked, so I have to wonder if I'm not supposed to ask this here... I apologize in advance if that is the case :p

I think the time is finally right for me to get a PSP... enough good, cheap games out to warrant it now.

I've looked into the whole firmware thing previously... but frankly all the sites I find about it are all in PSPpeople speak, and I don't have a friggin clue what they're on about. So...

I want to be able to do homebrew (like everyone else, probably :p)... so what sorts of PSP/firmware should I be looking for? I'll probably be getting a used one, and I know a few of the firmware versions from awhile back were ones to avoid... but I really don't really know what the status is now of what can and cannot be downgraded.

I'm also wondering what I need to do it... a USB cable, or if I can do it with a memory stick, etc.

And before I get a bunch of replies from people who just like to piss on the parade, yes I HAVE googled on this topic, but all the sites I find are outdated... so pffffffffft :p

I think you'll need an original copy of GTA Vice City stories for psp to install a custom firmware on any version of the psp firmware above 1.5.

I'm not totally up-to-date with downgraders, but isn't it Liberty City Stories that has the exploit?

Also, there's a downgrader for 2.00 that you can just download and go without having to buy GTA. (The TIFF exploit)

i bow to your greater knowledge. I had a 1.5 psp so i never really payed much attention to the downgraders.

lol, before the custom firmwares were made, I bounced all over the place with what version I had. Mine's a launch unit, so I started with 1.5, then 2.0, back to 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 2.6, 1.5. Now I use custom firmware, so I just update it every once in a while.
