I'm not sure what the first one was, but the first one I remember playing was Virtua Fighter. I musta spent 10 bucks on it when I first played it.

I remember when my brother and I played Virtua Fighter for the first time over 10 years ago. We were at a bowling alley and we ran into the machine and crapped our pants.

I was quoted as saying,"Graphics will never get better than this"

/end dumb story of the past

The first one around here was Dragon's Lair. It was the first time I'd ever seen a line of ~20 people waiting for their turn at an arcade game.

Alot of the early sit down machines were also 50 cents, but I also think it was dragon's lair... I thought it was the coolest thing, until I played it years later on dvd...

These days I love it when I find a Pinball game that's just a quarter. I'll play it if I have the time no matter how lame it looks.

Virtua Fighter is the first $0.50 game that came to mind for me too. (Probably because it's the one mentioned in the OP  ) I maybe played it a few times, but I'm just too cheap to pay $0.50 for one game.

That was back in the day when I actually went to an arcade a few times a month. Now I might step into one a few times a year.

here in the West (well here in UT and CA anyways) we have these places called Nickle Arcades.. and they freaking rule.. you pay 2 bucks to get in then after that all the games are a nickle (or up to like 3-5 nickles) but they have DDR, beatmania, Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Tekken 5.. pretty much anything..

and pinball machines for a nickle rule..

but yeah.. first one i remember is virtua fighter.. another was Crusin USA.. that came later in the arcade cycle though.. but i would spend money on that like no other.

I was recently in Tokyo and the arcades their are 100 yen (that equals about .80 cents.) Shinjuku has the best arcade in the world, Club Sega. To bad everybody in their is too damn good, Otaku freaks. The only game I could hold my own in was KOF 2K2. If you wanna play Tekken 5 or VF 4, forget about it.

I guess Dragon's Lair was the first 50 cent arcade. It didn't stand the test of time, but it was innovative.

street fighter and simpsons arcade is still a quarter in downtown t.o... Though the machines may not work properly but I'm still amazed that they're not collecting dust as much as some of the newer naomi arcades... I saw a dood with a beard play sf2:ce.

All games should be $0.25. I hated paying $0.50 for a game and it probably contributed to me not going to the arcade as much - my fun was over in 1/2 the time... although one quarter could last me about 1/2 hour or more with Ms. Pac-man.... those were the days...

Yes, nothing should go up in price! I should be able to get a Burger, Fries, and Shake for $.75! Hell, why stop there? I want to buy a home for $40,000!!!

I think the first arcade game I ever played was 50 cents.
Talking to my friend that is older, he said Afterburner was his first.

The only arcade games I played where the beat em ups like TMNTs and such. I do remember spending way too much money on the x-men arcade machine

X-Men...Simpsons...TMNT...those were the days to be at an arcade. I remember once spending my entire $10 bankroll that I would get to spend at an arcade just so I could finially beat TMNT and Simpsons in one visit. I left the arcade a happy man (boy) that day.

I used to go to a casino arcade with my friend while his dad would gamble, and I remember playing Crusin' USA for hours. The nice part about it was you got eight tokens for a dollar, so basically games were half price.
At the time, I thought it was cool that his dad would bring us there. Cool, in a sad, addict sort of way, I suppose.

I remember afterburner the sit down one that had a seat belt , and I believe the seat moved was the 50 cent video game. Atleast in arizona.
When I read the title I thought that the rapper Fifty Cent had a new arcade game coming out. Thankfully I was mistaken.
Thats what I was thinking.

Whatever happen to the arcade beat em up? Looking at this thread reminds me of Xmen, Simpsons, and TMNT. Was the last one Diehard: Arcade?

It was actually a frickin' DOLLAR in my area (Houston) and that was in 1986 or whenever it came out. Totally worth it though, doing barrel rolls in that huge cabinet.

I stopped playing arcades all together when they started costing $0.50. Then, much later, when I came across an arcade, they were up to $0.75 or more.

I remember having birthday parties at the arcade.

$20 on Ninja Turtles ($0.20 - 5 tokens/$), bliss!
