First time flying...advice/tips?

There is wifi, but it's not free. It's like $10-12 (IIRC) depending on length of flight.
Portable electronics can only be used above 10,000 feet--so for the vast majority of the flight, just not during take off and landing.
And yes, most gadgets would cause no problems. But they can't train flight attendents on which of the thousands of gadgets are ok and which aren't. And who knows when some newly released gadget will cause some kind of interference. So it's just easier and safer to cover their asses and just have everyone turn everything off during those time.
Again, it's just 10-15 minutes during take off and landing, no big deal to go without your gadgets during those times IMO.
